Oh really good. The light in the dark was a bit weak? and the long gaps of silence made me wish for a little more music here and there, but honestly overall great work. I love the art and the character design, the expressions are great, and the dialogue flows so well. Personally I think there needs to be more stories about deradicalization, and forgiveness, and the things you can come back from... like being in a hate group. I was definitely caught off guard a little by the like... Slop Monster Reveal? admittedly? It's the sort of thing I think would work better in a longer format, just to have more time to build it up rather than the few mentions here and there of Weird Stuff Happening. Especially since it happens so shortly after the big reveal about Zane. Still that's all nitpicking, when really I think it's an amazing piece about what you expect for yourself and the reality around you, and having to occasionally face unpleasant truths about the people around you, and about yourself as well. If it went on another 5000 words I'm willing to be it'd even follow up about what types of forgiveness you can find as well. Good work, definitely excited for what the team does next!

Developer(+2)

I wish I had 5k more words! I have always been interested in the idea that any future society we will build in short term will still have those unwilling to change their ideology for the better. How do we feel and navigate with the people who do want to change but struggle and those who do not.

The story starts off with a tech bro guy getting laid off and being forced to a blue collar job, struggling with the transistion. He's cynical at first, but then slowly becomes more appreciative of his new job. It's a very down to Earth story that does slice of life very well. It's relatable and it's calming. Zane is very cute, his dorky traits being incredibly endearing and a nice contrast to the protagonist. The other side characters are also endearing in their own way as well. It's just a easy going story all around.

Then the second half of the story happens. The first turn of the plot was done well even if it did rely on the protagonist being emotionally immature and frankly stupid. It does explore a lot of interesting ideas with the topic. And then the second twist happens from basically out of nowhere and yeah that was a doozie. The transition from the first half to that is a bit sudden for me. I think there could have been more hints to the reveal for a smoother transition. There's a scene where the protagonist assumes Zane did something only for him to say he didn't do it. That should have happened in the first half as a way to make the transition smoother. That said, the VN's still interesting and engaging even after the big reveal. By the end, all the parts of the story somehow work together, which I'm kinda impressed with. Definitely a good read that I'd recommend, but I'd be lying if I didn't prefer the first half over the second.

Submitted(+1)

Alright, that was a wild ride. The shift from mundane life into that sure was a whiplash, but I’m kinda digging it. The characters on their own are believable, but looking at the whole plotline… the execution could be better. The use of backgrounds is pretty effective, and the SFX is good. I just wish there were more ambient sound or music. All in all, this one is definitely unique and fun. Well done!

(+1)

This was a pretty fulfilling story with twists and turns I wasn't expecting and a nice character arc for our bitter protag. Shame we don't actually meet his BF tho.

Developer

Thanks for the read! With so much going on the bf was really sidelined. I had more in mind for him but those parts had to be cut for time constraints. He might have fit in more of an epilogue scenario, but who is to say. The caller ID photo is actually something I drew! I love Bison! 🦬

'2nd Shift' is a contemporary slice-of-life story that explores the dynamics of coworkers in a job setting, and the nuanced navigation of allyship in the LGBTQ community. This visual novel does a great job on the character sprites and the admittedly sparce background and audio design, but makes for a full immersive experience. It's biggest strength is how the characters all feel like a diverse set of real people, even if some of them tend to dip into caricature, they still interact with each other in genuine ways. It also really highlights the idea that 'all work is valuable work', with the classic 'white collar worker learns the value of blue collar work' story line. The most interesting plotline is one of allyship and working towards forgiveness and redemption over one's past.

The story itself does a good job of characterizing the main character as the classic 'cynical tech-bro' type, and it's always satisfying to have the plot throw his ego in his face with the classic 'it's harder than it looks' reality check. I do wish that we had a bit more context to the main character's grievances and trauma, since our understanding is that they have to take meds and were bullied in school (possibly also was violently assaulted, but that only comes as an inference to later scenes), and that it came up more during some of the heart to heart moments between characters.

The commentary around the value of 'janitorial work' was also interesting in how it was framed. All the characters contrasting with the main character about the inherent value of doing good work is, while noble does start to border on preachy. The plot twist of an eldritch god of waste that gets stronger the messier the school is does seem like something that should be mentioned on first day of training. That plot point, while foreshadowed in the first scene, does only get paid off in the very last scene, and makes a complete left turn and calls into question the entire handling of the situation of the entire story. The way that fighting off an eldritch being is treated as mundane, has a history of occurring while still being kept secret, and the response to the justifiably confused and expected reaction makes it all seem silly and out of place.

The other big plot thread was the friendship with the wolf of the story, a straight ally bro-wolf with a troubled past. The story does a real good job of endearing the reader to his charming and quirky go-getter attitude, and the reveal of his sordid past should have brought forth a complicated and nuanced discussion to the forefront between the MC and the wolf. But, as soon as it's revealed, it kind of just gets explained away and resolved really quickly once the toilet monster shows up and the main character has to make a choice right then if he wants it to work out. Like, there's a whiplash there on how it ends on the final choice with no knowledge of how things progressed, I guess leaving it to the reader to just imagine what happens.

As far as the theme 'light in the dark', there's a few instances of it happening physically on screen, like the phone light in a dark closet, or the light coming from a room into a darker room. Figuratively, it's hard to say if the ally-wolf could be considered a 'light' emotionally for the main character's 'dark' mental state, other than just being overly optimistic and cheerful. It's a bit too big of a stretch for me. Presentation wise, the art sprites are great and diverse, I love all the facial expressions. Creatively, this seems like a take on the classic 'workplace sitcom' but with a surprise rpg monster twist that comes out of left field, so points for that. Overall, this feels like a story that goes lengths to make a great foundation and set up these great characters, but when it's time to cross the finish line and explore the resolution and falling actions, it's not as clean as it could be.

Presentation-wise, I think the photographic backgrounds in the game match the mundane and literally gritty reality the MC is living.  I also appreciated all the little animations of the sprites, as well as the hand-crafted light effects on them. What sound design present is done quite well too, but the complete silence for most of the runtime did become a bit a boring . (I'd have muted the game and turned on some tunes if I wasn't rating this, so it wouldn't be an issue for a normal playthrough).

Even though I'm not huge on slice of life stories, this one actually resonated with me. It reflects many people's reality of crushed dreams, where one can end up feeling stuck in a life that seems beneath all the effort put in to 'become' something. Menial jobs like the one portrayed here is basically used as a threat by authority figures growing up; study hard or you'll become one of those

With this in mind, I'm not sure how to feel about the late-game revelation. The story was doing such a good job with showing that meaning can be in smaller things; community and empathy change lives. The sudden shift to "actually, these people are finding meaning in fighting monsters and shit" undercut a lot of what had been built up. Persona but they're adults is perhaps a more exciting thing to read for many, and the game is still in development, but for what's in the jam version I'm left a bit disappointed with that late part.

总的来说,这部作品我个人感觉在故事情节的发展上富有想象力,但是介绍上有些急促了,如果能让后半情节展开的更加合理的话我相信这是一部好的作品,我个人而言按10分来算可以给到7分

That was… weird. It took a while to get going. When that guy talked about Zane being in a far-right group, it felt like it was starting to go somewhere, but then supernatural monsters appeared out of nowhere! That was quite the whiplash. In the end, neither of those elements felt like they had a satisfying conclusion. Zane is an interesting character and the others are alright, too. The writing is fine. The sprites look good, with nice expressions. The backgrounds work ok. Most of the game doesn’t have music which is a shame. Overall, I’m not sure what to think. It was weird.

Developer

Thanks for the read! It's an ambitious story for sure.

You portray well the atmosphere in the workplace, and how the MC is slowly getting along with the coworkers.

But I wasn’t ready for all the twists in this vn! Bit of sudden, but hey, it really surprised me lol.

Anyhow, good job for your vn, you all work well for the writing and all the art you provide!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the read! The whole team learned a lot from the experience! Looking forward to digging into your game!

I liked this one a lot! A few things didn't quite land for me, especially in terms of how some of the themes were handled in the second half, but the level of effort and ambition in even trying to manage all those themes were impressive.

Working through each criterion, spoilers from this point forward:

Implementation of Theme:

As mentioned, there are a lot of themes at play here, but for evaluating this category we're focusing on the jam ones, and I don't feel like these were handled very convincingly for me. The primary "light in the darkness" here for me appears to be the sense of community that pulls the MC out of his negative emotional spiral (or I guess maybe doesn't depending on the choice you make at the end), but I think my issue here is primarily about how this fits into the "my wolf" theme. Obviously there's not a romantic connection between the MC and Zane here, which is fine, but even as a friend guiding the MC towards that "light" it's not really all there. Sure, he's the character we see the most often, but I'm not sure his role of changing the MC's mind of how to evaluate his life is really all that more important than Sarah's or Fern's or Forsyth's. He's just one part of the bigger picture.

Story:

I thought the characters were mostly handled well, with each of our main cast feeling fairly fleshed out, even the ones that don't get a ton of screentime (there are some exceptions. You could probably cut Jean entirely and you wouldn't be missing much). Everyone has their endearing qualities, as well as their flaws, (honestly I felt like most of the cast besides Zane [backstory notwithstanding] and Sarah was kind of a prick, especially the MC - I'm glad he got called out for that at the end), and this did a lot for making them feel like real people rather than just tools to move the plot and themes forward.

One aspect of the MC I wish we had delved into a little more though was his relationship. From my closest experience to the events of this VN, I put way too much of the burden of coping with those changes on my partner, and that ended up leading to some strife in the long run. I'm not saying the MC's boyfriend has to be an integral part of the plot or anything, especially since it's a jam and time and space are limited, but it did feel weird that he was noticeably absent from the entire story after the first scene. Great job really capturing the anxiety of job searching and constantly receiving soulless rejection emails though.

Regarding the shift into spookiness, I did feel that this was telegraphed plenty with the swiping at the closet, the ominous red glow when the MC is trying to find a first aid kit for his dumb ass, and Fern's little slips about the teams. I certainly don't have a problem with the story going there; if anything I was getting a little antsy for it to get going after so much slice of life in the early stages. I do have a few issues though:

1) The grime gremlin (grimelin? Yes): If it was intended to be actually spooky, it kinda... wasn't? I feel like this was the intention with how casually Zane dealt with it, but it felt a bit anticlimactic from that sense. I thought where we going was more along the lines of MC discovers the threat contemporaneously with the other workers, and their reaction helps continue to change how he feels about them, but everyone just kinda shrugging the grimelins off felt like kind of a letdown. Also, if the grimelin leaves a trail of yuck everywhere it goes, why weren't there any traces when it tried to attack the MC on night 1?

2) Effect on theme: This is probably the biggest sticking point in the game for me. So much of the first half of this VN is built around the MC learning not to be a dick to people and assume what they do or don't find value in based on his biased notions of prestige. The absolute bludgeoning the MC takes from Sarah for assuming what he believes to be mundane and unfulfilling is necessarily mundane and unfulfilling for everyone especially stands out. Introducing the whole Buffy the Grimelin Slayer angle severely undercuts that message for me since the school custodians are objectively not doing something mundane and unfulfilling. They're protecting the world from some weird eldritch sewer demon. This changes the message from "MC receives a change in perspective by looking at his current circumstances in a new light" to "MC clearly did not have enough information to fully assess the situation," which comes off far weaker to me.

A couple other quick points:

1) I didn't fully buy the MC's reaction to the initial suggestion of Zane's background. I know he has plenty of preconceived notions and he's kind of a panicky dick and all, but I found it just a little odd that he'd take the word of a random dick at the bar that much on face value. Some of the other evidence presented didn't seem convincing either. I think it's certainly possible that someone, especially someone who may or may not have slept through a few history classes like Zane might have, might be familiar with the phrase "make the trains run on time" while being fully oblivious to the connotation. That sequence might have also benefitted from removing the text conversation between Zane and Fern since that kind of kills the tension in the scenes that follow because the reader is now aware that Zane is on the MC's side. I also think "he's part of my pack now" does not get enough attention as a massive red flag though...

2) This is a complete tangent about an inconsequential detail that literally no one besides me cares about, but is having "red wolves" as a mascot like, racist in this universe? There would be such a weird parallel between the real world Arkansas State University changing their nickname from "Indians" to "Red Wolves" to be less offensive while "Red Wolves" is actually the offensive term in this universe. I don't think this was intentional, but I did find it interesting.

That was... a lot. I really did like this story a lot though! Seriously ^.^"

Presentation:

Liked most of it, sprites and CGs were good. Zane decking the ox was a particular highlight for the latter. Music was inoffensive but did feel conspicuously absent at times where it didn't necessarily need to be. Also, minor point, but this story appeared to take place in the U.S., but there were some terms like "ute" and "uni" that came up that are not parts of the American lexicon. They didn't like, completely break immersion or anything, but it did distinctly give the impression of a story that takes place in America written by an Australian.

Creativity:

As stated above, this VN was ambitious. Maybe not in terms of gameplay or structure, but we are covering a lot of ground in a relatively short time here. I think this does occasionally lead to some issues as outlined in previous sections, but as a general conclusion it still mostly handled what it set out to do in a very entertaining way. I really can't fault the team for their creativity here.

I'll give this ehhhh... 666 grimelins out of 3,455 mops.

Developer(+1)

Shit lots to dig into here.

Grime gremlin: Yeah this was not as well thought out as it should have been. Admittedly my mind just kinda thought up the leaving sludge behind part and just didn't think it through. There are SEVERAL spots that if you are a janitor or are at all familiar with the equipment then you know some scenes wouldn't work or they would have some flaws. Surprised someone caught something like that from the supernatural side and not the mundane side. The idea that they are in fact doing important work here kinda slipped my mind in that yeah the thematic dissonance is there. I see that now. I could maybe make the case that IRL sanitation jobs DO infact stop societal collapse as true. If you worked in sanitation to any degree you quickly see how FUCKY it all is. Just how much trash/waste a single person makes in one day is incredible. Regardless of fighting gods or just keeping things tidy the jobs are meaningful.

Cultural differences: One of our team members is Aussie! Wanted to throw in some things for fun. Wanted to add in milk bar too, and some of the photos show Australian traffic. Just wanted some fun. The red wolf thing is just referencing the species from North Carolina. It's an endangered species. Thought it was fun. The indigenous undertones legit escaped me. Wanted a wolf breed. Picked red wolves.

Trains: Another good one. Damn. You're right. Could have smoothed that out a bit. I think I wanted my cake and eat it to there. The confusion as to the usage of that as a dog whistle versus just unknowingly repeating shit (as some white bois do) could be added.

Theme: Its true everyone did their part to progress the MC ideologically. Zane was the one doing the tangible work of inviting MC and making space for him to exist. He might not have the theory down like others do, but he lives the values. He was the one initiating things. That is where I think Zane fits into the Light angle and My Wolf angle.

Thank you for the constructive criticism. It was a challenge building something this large and yet keeping it this small. Always happy to see books length comments. Love engagement like this! Happy trails.

(+1)

To follow up on the Grime Gremlin paragraph, I just wanted to reinforce that I was not trying to say that I personally view sanitation jobs as mundane and unfulfilling, but just that the MC does. I actually think if you had the other custodians responding to the threat as it develops rather than being like some kind of SCP group it would have made it a lot easier to sell the parallels of protecting the school from a major threat and the day-to-day activities of just keeping the place clean and tidy. Like if the attitude of the staff was "Just another way we have to keep the school clean" I think that could go a long way to shaping the MC's opinion of them and moving him in the direction that they represent much more than a "dead end job".

Also, yeah, caught the Night 1 thing because while I have quite a bit of experience writing, reading, and reviewing spooky monster stuff, I have no experience in sanitation work. So I can assure you whatever gaps in logic happened in regards to the latter went way over my head.

Appreciate the in-depth response! Love to see dev teams interacting so much with the comments.

Spoiler Alert!

A simple, mundane job with some supernatural aspects in the background is a really creative idea and I really enjoyed reading through it. However, the lack of warnings before the genre shift kind of pulls me out of immersion. Like I’m not sayin it should be revealed at the start, but maybe some extra hints could do wonders (It really doesn’t help that MC dumps everything onto Zane as some sort of misdirection). As a result, the genre shift to supernatural felt out of nowhere, more like a means to close the story/close the plot point with Zane rather than something actually inherent in the world.

For the writing, I especially love the dialogue writing, the characterization is really clear and they’re all such goobers I love them <3.

Presentation wise, the VN could really use some bg music to really drive home the tension/emotions. I like what you did with the main menu, though it does feel a bit empty when you have an extra box with nothing but the VN name and version on it. Oh and the textbox felt a lil tight, especially with the name of the speaker so close to the edge. The sprites looks silly in an endearing way, and honestly my favorite part about the VN.

The sense of community in that position should be the ‘Light’ while the ‘Dark’ being the circumstances they’re in before starting work here. It could also refer to the ‘god’. Honestly, the theme only becomes much more relevant in the end but it’s still a good interpretation of the theme regardless.

P.S Laying down on the closet floor is such a MOOD.

P.P.S MC better get paid extra for all that work, he needs it.

Thanks for the read! Tone shift and pacing seems to be a general problem. I swear I was trying to sign post those elements early on ;.; ! The Zane story needed something to bring it to a nuanced point. Otherwise his seems less redeemed or changed than he actually is. Background music is by far the biggest regret I have. I feel like I have a better handle on it now.

Also yes! COMMUNITY!!! I seeded that aspect as the team was kind of the pseudo anarchist progressive group that took matters into their hands. The transformative nature of community as a light. I tried to have the visuals match the theme too. You only see "daylight" like once or twice?

(+2)

You have no idea how long I’ve been hungering for something like this. It was a deeply emotional read for me, in large part because I was reliving similar personal experiences and projecting myself (and a former friend) onto Zane and Jake as the story unfolded, which amplified emotions tenfold x) Only wish it was longer, or there was a bit more satisfying conclusion since the story felt like it stopped, rather than ended - I can only presume you had time/word constraints to meet.

As for more general remarks, I found the lack of sounds/music very noticeable in some parts and the extreme technical details and American-specific terms occasionally made me stop in my tracks, but that’s more of a ESL me thing. On the other hand, I really liked the sprites and the creative use of transitions in select scenes.

Very excited for what you’ll release next!

Developer(+1)

The conclusion originally was larger and covered more of that final choice. Word and time constraints made me reconsider that. Overall the rest of the work is better off for the time well spent working on what was there.

As a custodian I could not over look the technical aspect of the job. I felt like you needed to KNOW what the MC was dealing with. As tedium but also just how vital those jobs are to making the world operate. Unsung heroes, really.

Thanks for the read! Glad it could scratch that itch.

Submitted(+2)

I will try to be vague since I think this game improves the more blind you can afford to go in when starting it. I do like a lot the theme implementation aspect, the central point of people trying to be each other's light at the end of a tunnel. Couldn't see how dark said tunnel was until some late reveals and they probably hit me harder since I reconize one of the first flag planted and just assumed  that Zane was implying that one of his coworkes just wasn't pleasant to work with.

While the first reveal gets efficiently flagged and could be identified by a savvier reader, probably the second and major reveal could have used just a tiny bit more hints for. When it was happening my first thought was "dream sequence?" and while I apreciated the direction it took, it could be more of a rug pull for someone's else.

Presentation wise, honestly I really liked TFD's art so it put this immediatly on my radar, but the entire team did a good job. Is not the flashiest or the most technically intricated, but is charming, has good ideas and it simply execute them well. Good job, was a really pleasant experience, favorite jam submission so far.

Developer(+1)

Glad you liked it mate!

I know I had fun as I worked through the script and programming all the character interactions. I do see how things can feel like they're moving fast around the second reveal though, and I feel like that's where an extra few thousand words could have helped us.

Working with the team was a joy, and I agree TFD absolutely crushed it with the art.

Developer(+1)

Tried to fit in as much set up as I could where I could. I worry I might have made that first "flag," a bit to obvious. But like IYKYK. Second reveal just didn't fit as much as I wanted but by the time I had made sure Zane was taken care of there was not enough space to make it feel earned.

Thanks for the read! Was quite the challenge overall.

Submitted(+2)

Loved this. It's happening in a novel setting, a custodial shift at an elementary school, and doesn't hold back when it comes to fleshing out the side characters. Zane is such a weirdo but he's goofy and lovable. Quite novel to have My Wolf not be a romance too. The other characters are all quirky as well, but they're full of personality. And this is in the running for the Best Tail Wag superlative too! This VN does like to take its time and linger on the small details but I found myself enjoying it regardless. It's very well thought out and relatable. Though, to be honest, I think there were a couple of pacing issues. For example, the horror elements could have been foreshadowed a bit better, I think. As is, it drops out of nowhere, and ended up being a bit jarring. But there's a lot of other things to like, such as the fact that there's a very real story about redemption and finding your purpose beneath the wacky plot, so I think it's still pretty great in general.

Developer

I appreciate the read! I wanted this may Wolf entry to be still about "my wolf", but platonic in nature. Something still deep, intimate, and burgeoning but not romantic. Forsyth 's appraisal of Zane was what I wanted to come across first and foremost for him. The entire story if expanded has the supernatural elements as more set up for the relationship between MC and Zane. I wanted the mundanity to contrast the more surreal moments. Fantasy as a tool to explore the human(furry) condition.

Submitted(+3)

I think my only big grievance would be that it feels like there's a visual dissonance between the prominent, numerous photo backgrounds that invite your attention and the fairly cartoony art, though both aspects work by themselves and you get used to it while playing. The subtle lighting effects also help; they were definitely a smart touch.

As for the story: a very unusual case in the sense that there are one or two extreme genre shifts that come off as sort of jarring but there's enough thematic continuity to smooth over the transitions and no aspect is uncompelling by itself but one still has to wonder if abandoning what the game was (very successfully!) doing in the first act was ultimately the right call or not.

I just like the beginning so much – the frank, down-to-earth subject matter is nice to see, the characters and the workplace as a setting are believable, and there's a lot of good discussion of the ambivalences of menial labor. I would have liked a VN that was just about that and nothing else with no hesitation at all. And then... to be clear, it's not like the story takes a bad direction or anything; the last part is similarly charming, and though the character drama takes a turn for the more extreme, it still feels like it's grounded in reality. I guess I can say that doing things this way was probably the more interesting option, and I can't bring myself to disagree with that. Maybe there's a case for reconsidering the structure & pacing a little – for how wild the final beat is conceptually, it has comparatively few words dedicated to it.  I don't know, man, great stuff in any case.

Developer

Yes! All very good points. I came up with the idea and about halfway through realized just how big this was getting. I had to cut a lot of things( you got to question all the characters at the end). I was too ambitious in the scope of the project and as a result you can see the deficits. I have to thank my Team as honestly the ones who handled the needed actions to bring out the best moments and keep up the pace.

Set up was the name of game for what I wanted the last few scenes to be. That and the overall narrative. Things fell by the wayside. Thank you for playing. Thankful it as a whole doesn't fall apart.

Thank you! TFD's sprite work and Kai's sprite direction really bring the characters to life. The pacing and structure are weak points, but glad the mundane parts have charm. Tried my best to keep all the dialogue and stakes grounded for the heavier hitting bits. Genuinely curious which conversations had the charm vs others.

Thank you for playing and possibly rating!

The waves of the pacing and tension are so nice in this! And that bar meetup was a great build up. You bounce from tense moment to break. To really tense (the outside fight with zane). To break, to tense with grey sludge (dig the cute-sy design on that fella). Its that feeling of once the mc loses that normalcy... its lost, you feel it in the scenes after. What some might feel like extra details, in ex. describing the work stuff, dumping down the drain, the refilling trash bags, or etc job points, actually sells me more on it. Puts me into that "pov". And it does have a point! And more so about the sludge monsters later on.

the style and vocabulary for characters had a good distinct separation. Zane really shines in this cat. for me. The way he carries himself, the topics he brings up (DnD, nerdy stuff, laughs at his jokes), the emotions he wears. excellent stuff.

For me i felt like the MC grew alot, especially from the cast themselves. But also Zane's stuff really battled for that spot light (in a good way) for me. Really enjoyed that coming together/reconciling at the end too. Was really getting afraid there for a moment about Zane's screen time. Like if you were building it up to some death flag for him in the final confrontation. All that happy! just to sweep my legs out last sec xDD

Cleaning "god" is a amusing/moe idea. Would hav loved to see some animation of some epic stand off show down with the team. Maybe have the MC come in to save someone if they picked the right choices.

The dialogue was very "people"-y, the topics felt explored but not hamfested. Real people, with real issues, doing real shit, going through life feeling things alot of us have felt in degree or fashion. Over all thoroughly enjoyed my time with project, could have kept going for hours and not noticed. Ty to you and the team for making this treat. Again, cant wait to see more for ya. You got yourself a fan with me. PS the gag at the end was a nice cherry on top.
