I AM RATING THESE ALL THESE JAM SUBMISSIONS RELATIVE TO ONE ANOTHER. THERE ARE HIGH HIGHS AND LOW LOWS BUT PLEASE DON’T TAKE THIS TOO PERSONALLY, AFTERALL, WE ALL ONLY HAD A MONTH.

I’VE ALSO ONCE AGAIN VERY MUCH PROCRASTINATED ON DOING THESE JAM REVIEWS SO THESE ARE BASED ON MY MEMORIES FROM 10 MONTHS AGO.

Implementation of Theme (1):

???

Story (2):

I think the most memorable thing is when the MC is cornered by the guards and decides to escape down a river or a waterfall.

There are few twists and turns but I don’t remember that much that stands out. It’s quaint story that has a beginning, middle and a happy ending.

Presentation (2):

It was pretty impressive for you to make all of your own assets but I think just trying to shade them would’ve made them feel less flat.

Creativity (1):

I don’t think I was in the mood for more medieval MY WOLF’s at the time.

Total (6):

Finally, I’m out of the 4/5 rankings.

I find a little ironic that I forgot so much about the VN with forget-me-nots in the little. Especially considering is on the longer side of submissions. Hopefully the creator makes something again in the future because the community has kind of forgotten about them too.

Dawww that’s pretty cute. It’s a simple nice story, but the visuals really help elevate everything. The writing needs quite a bit of editing, and the audio works could use more touch. Nevertheless, it’s a good storybook-like read. Well done!

This was a lovely story! I'm a sucker for stories where the cold stoic warms up to his love interest. The interactions between the two main characters were really sweet and I really like the ending. The storybook tale had pretty visuals. I think the biggest issue is that the prose is weak and there were a bunch of grammatic errors. I also do think it would have been better if the romance took place in a longer time span. As it stands, it's a bit unreasonable for someone to believe that a romance unfolded with only a few days. Other then that, I really liked this VN and I would definitely recommend reading.

This was a nice read! There was only a couple of things I could complain about.

The writing needs some work too, for example; There are a couple of plot holes in the story, there are quite a few grammar and spelling errors, and the pacing of their relationship felt rushed as well. And we never got Charles' explanation on why he had joined the rebellion.

I liked the characters though and I liked the premise of the story (kinda want to see an epilogue for these 2). The art was also nice!

Great job!

I do love how this seems to reverse the expected roles, throwing in a bit of some of my favorite VNs! I already gave a lot of my commentary during the stream, but great job!

Pretty decent VN. To be honest, my favorite part of this VN was the protagonist. I feel like, ordinarily, the knight would be the LI and Charles the charming protagonist that tries to melt his hard exterior. But, regardless of their character status, faceless knight characters are always sexy and fascinating. I did feel like it was a bit disappointingly quick for Einar to warm up, though. It seemed uncharacteristically irresponsible of him to leave his post to take up fishing with Charles. And it's quite odd that someone trained to spot the rebellion wouldn't recognize the rebellion's badge. And Charles never actually explained any of his past or why he joined the rebellion, come to think of it. The writing also could have used some work, with frequent typos and grammar errors, but ultimately it's still a cozy romance story, with a satisfying twist and resolution toward the end. To be honest, I liked it a lot despite all the plot holes I've brought up.

A true 2-act story of a knight meeting a (secretly) rebel and then casting away his obligations to protect the man he cares about. A simple story, really, but still nicely told. It’s fun to see Charles try to befriend Einar and Einar slowly warming up to him. The dialogue is nice, but there are a number of typos, missing words and syntax errors throughout. Not many sprites, but they look good. The backgrounds are simple, but work. The music and sound are very sparse though. I liked the postgame title screen.^^ Overall, nothing special but pretty nice.

There is some amount of game jam jank (frequent punctuation & capitalization errors, the menus wiggling strangely when hovered due to the outlines of the buttons toggling, the small text box forces long lines to be split across multiple), but it's a pretty functional piece on the whole. The art has its charms, even if the backgrounds feel a little too flat and simplistic, and the narrative arc works.

It does feel like the characterization stumbles a bit. Though the protagonist's most prominent trait is his devotion to his duty as a knight, it feels like all that is given up pretty easily for the sake of a person he's only known for a few days; the story doesn't really go out of its way to mine the premise for all the drama and tension it could provide. Likewise, Charles's interest in him comes off as a bit sudden, considering how risky the friendship is from his point of view.

There is plenty of setup and in-text justification for both of these things, but the beats feel more believable intellectually than emotionally – perhaps the two could have had known each other previously instead of only meeting now, or the text could have surfaced the understated romantic/sexual tension between them more to explain the connection. I'm not sure if what happens is fully satisfying like this.

This was a cute, if not particularly ambitious, little romance.

Spoilers from here on out.

Implementation of Theme:

Well, I think the intent here is pretty clear with lines like "But I didn't feel capable of ending the life of that wolf that had brought light to my dark reality" and "But even so, holding the hand of the canine that had brought light to my life, I felt happy." I have two issues with this:

1) I know that "implementation of theme" is a rating criterion and all, but I don't think you have to be quite that on-the-nose with the language. There are scenes where you do a much better job of selling that theme with imagery and implication, like Einar being able to see the stars again with Charles, and you really don't need to be so direct.

2) I think that directness is actually a bit of a disservice to the themes of this particular work, as I think it's an oversimplification to have the "light" just be Charles. My reading here would be that the "darkness" is the familial and societal expectations placed on Einar and the "light" is his freedom to choose and remove himself from those constraints. Charles is more the vehicle that guides him to that light rather than being the light itself.

Story & Creativity:

I'm combining these two here since my thoughts on the two are pretty closely related. This is probably the most straightforward romance I've played in the jam so far, and it has what is essentially a Disney movie plot. Person from rigid societal position meets someone from outside the castle walls, they show them there's more to life, they immediately fall in love, run away, and live happily ever after. This isn't a bad thing per se; these stories are popular for a reason. But at the same time, it's not doing anything particularly new or interesting either.

That said, I thought the interactions between Einar and Charles in the town were really well-done and well-paced. Things fell apart a bit for me after Einar leaves town though. I buy that Einar's worldview might have been somewhat shaken by his experiences outside the castle, but I think it takes more than 5 days, a picture book, and like 1.5 solid dates to override decades of conditioning and turn someone into a full-blown rebel. I also do not buy that Charles would have broken into the castle just to hang out with Einar after 1.5 dates, nor that he would have worn his rebel insignia to do so.

I think a more believable scenario might be (and this where I thought things were going when Charles showed up at the castle) Charles going to the castle to assassinate the cartoonishly evil king, using the relationship he built with Einar to get him inside, and convincing Einar to help him. In that version, Charles has both more grounded motivations in protecting his town (which the king wants to do bad things to) and serving the rebellion more generally while also incorporating his new romantic motivations with Einar.

Presentation:

Artwork was pretty simple but effective. I thought the sprites were nice and I appreciate the effort to make your own backgrounds. Music and sound was never annoying or intrusive and I think the postgame main menu image is very cute.

Lots and lots of typos and other errors with the writing though. I get it, it's a jam and time is limited, but this definitely could have benefited from another proofreading pass.

Overall a solid and entertaining entry though.

A pretty sweet indulgent romance between a floppa and a moon moon wrapped in the opening movements of a rebellion story. Einar and Charles are cute and the overall motions of the plot are fine, but the writing could do with some touch ups for errors and stiffness. There's quite a bit of suspension of disbelief needed for several parts of the scenario - perhaps a bit too much for me to really invest myself in the non-romantic side of the tale you're trying to tell.

There's some nice theming, and not just with the Jam theme, but it also rings a little dissonantly with the ending.

The changed main menu at the end is super cute though, mwah mwah.

Spoiler Alert!

A very pleasant and cute entry :>. The plot was moving a bit slow, but all is for their relationship to really develop. Thematically, I especially love how the flower Forget-me-not tied into the story. One small nitpick though, it is yet still far too fast to show Charles doing such a drastic action imo, you could say that it is similar to a love at first sight situation, still that plot progression is kind of questionable.

Presentation wise, I kind of love the art style that spanned throughout the story. The background being fully revealed at the end is a cool concept, though maybe you should’ve shown a bit more color in the bg itself (like maybe only remove the tent and the people), then display them after game completion.

The theme is probably the romance’s classic ‘You are the light in my darkness’ which works especially well in this context where Einar is confined to the rules of being a ‘Knight’, and the wolf being his savior.

P.S Please tell me King Argos dies a horrible death :3

'A Knight's Myosotis' is a really charming fantasy romance story that really delivers on that fluffy sweet romance. It's a bit of a long story for how simple the plot it, but I think it really adds to investment you have into these characters on who slowly find affection for each other. It does a lot to establish that the main character is a dutiful stoic that needs his heart warmed by a free-spirited wolf. There's a lot of little details in the setting that really paint a lovely picture of this fantasy land, as well as a culture that feels lived in.

The implementation of theme really does come through well, metaphorically in this story. The oppressive ruler ship of a tyrant king is a dark place for this knight, who only wants to fulfill his duty of being a good knight. The rebel wolf acts as the light in the dark, as someone who has finally shown him warmth and affection, that he hasn't received in his upbringing. The story is simple but effective in showcasing this. It also does well in giving a proper dilemma for the main character, as he's presented with a difficult decision.

The art is very charming and storybook like, which lends itself well to the aesthetic that it's going for. The little reveal at then end of the story when the knight's helmet finally reveals his face is a great way to tie in his growth as a character, letting himself be vulnerable and open with 'his wolf'. It's actually quite nice that this explores romance in a platonic way, in a way that feels approachable for all ages.

While this story doesn't do anything crazy, it does try fun techniques like turning into an actual storybook presentation, which I think it a really cute a creative use of the medium. Overall, this was an enjoyable read, and I look forward to seeing other stories from this artist/author
