Really cool game! This takes me back to tomb raider on the PS1. Fantastic aesthetic you nailed the execution
Thank you for playing! Congrats on 12th overall!!
Thank you! <3
Very cool and extremely ambitious game to be able to finish in the time frame. I'm no games journalist but that tutorial did take me a bit of time to finish, especially the slide jump section. It wasn't fully apparent to me that if you jump right at the very start of the slide you'll get the distance you need. In generally I think there could be a little more leniency in the mechanics, but I still had a good time and the visuals were great!
Thanks for playing!
The implementation of the slide jump wound up very underwhelming. It's essentially just another jump that feeds off of the slide's added velocity, resulting in that tight time window to be effective. Originally, I wanted Sierra to launch into a cool torpedo spin jump for some flair + distance. In the source code she has a few unused animations for it.
Really loved the retro vibe and the control design felt super smooth. Great job!
Thanks for playing!
Your character controller is really impressive. I remember you posting over on the discord during development and thought what you had going already was damn impressive then!
I felt that the games platforming started off with some quite difficult maneuvers and sections. I unfortunately could not get past the slide / long jump bit.
That said, I think you did a really good job with your character controller + the art and i would genuinely like to see more of it.
Nice work!
Thanks for playing! I went ahead and threw the source on github and linked it on this submission page in case anyone wants to poke through it.
I'm gonna repeat what other have already said but... I really liked the aesthetics of the game. However the wall jumps were a bit annoying haha.
It's really polished for a jam game. Great job !
Thanks for playing!
Wow, amazing work! Controls and maybe jump height could use some tweaking to improve the experience, but I still really enjoyed. Sometimes instead of wall-jumping I would bonk the wall and be stunned; that was a bit frustrating. Still very impressive for a jam submission, great job
I've experienced the bonk of death many a time. The window to jump after hitting the wall is small and definitely could have benefited from more leniency. I tried to take the Super Mario 64 approach with wall jumps for better and for worse.
Thanks for playing!
I absolutely adore the vibes and aesthetic of your game. It all really comes together with the audio for a real great retro experience. I agree with a lot of the comments that I found the controls and jumps etc. a bit difficult and unforgiving. I thought I was going to be stuck at the very first wall. Once I got to the more open world-y section, I could get a few of the hidden chips, but I found it impossible to get through the acid pit areas. I might come back and try it again when I have more time!
Thanks for the feeback! Yep, the general consensus is that the game is hard as nails. Going back and playing after some time away from the project and I have to agree.
I'm glad you liked the visuals! The way Sierra's model and the music turned out are a big source of pride for me lol. Thanks for playing!
As others have said, I really like the animation and art style but am struggling with the controls! I am finding it difficult to get over obstacles in the intended way, instead I ended up spamming jump and managed to get over the first wall. Think I need more time to get used to the controls and response
Thanks for the comment! The game definitely expects too much out of the gate
Neat game. I really dig the platforming but struggled like some of the other commenters. Platforming controls are really hard to get a tight feel with and even harder under the time pressure. Great job over all.
Thanks for the comment and thanks for playing!
Impressive work! Its a fun game with good mechanics! Indeed the platforming was quite difficult for me, I did got the first slope-jump, only after the hint on jumping right away helped me continue. But other than that I liked the music and the general aesthetics which work well altogether here. Well done :) !
Thank you so much for playing! I'm glad you liked it
Love the retro vibe. I think the platforming is quite unforgiving, I didn’t manage to climb the building or jump past the acidic water. Pulling off wall jumps felt pretty difficult because you sometimes bump into the wall and fall and the movement is a bit slippery in general. Nevertheless, I really like this entry. Great job!
Thank you so much for the feedback! You're right, climbing the building especially winds up being frustrating for that reason. I'll experiment with adjusting the raycast that's responsible for the wall kick.
Most of my testing was done on a gamepad, and since it's a game based around 360 degree analog movement (variable speed, precise directions, etc) the keyboard experience is definitely the more challenging one.
Seriously thanks for playing!
I love the aesthetic and the main character of this game. Having said that i have a huge problem with how the game starts and is absolutely unforgiving, especially when just introducing the mechanics for the first time, the jumps are wayyy to tight and the checkpoints are sometimes buggy (got softlocked). Great job on the entry!
For sure, the tutorial is my biggest oversight here.
Thank you for the kind words! The game was really cobbled around the Sierra character. Much of my original idea for the game didn't see the light of day, as is the case for many jam games.
fun game to play once you learn the mechanics, it just hard to clear some of the gaps / calls at the start. would be easier if some walls / gaps were a bit smaller. overall a well made game with cool style, sound, and UI.
I recognize you from Major Jam! Thanks for giving my game a shot! I agree, the tutorial is much too difficult right out of the gate.
yea lol i clicked on your profile because i recognized art style.
Love the style of the visuals!
The game is great but I don't understand how the walljump works so I'm having a hard time progressing. When I jump toward a wall and press space, it'll sometimes wall jump normally, sometimes "stun" me with a hurt animation... or sometimes both at once! Any advice?
Thanks for giving it a shot!
It's a very tight window between contact with the wall and getting stunned. Admittedly, probably too tight of a window, not to mention a little finicky I'm sure.
There's actually a few frames in that stun animation when you're thrown back that you can still pull off a wall kick. Maybe try delaying your button press a tiny tiny bit.
What a fun entry, nice work. I’m honestly shocked you got the web export to work without any issues (at least, I didn’t experience any). There is quite a bit of game here.
I had some difficulty with the movement, I feel like a little more velocity would have helped clear some of the jumps and flow the movement together a bit more. Other than that, I was really impressed with the look of the game, shader use, etc. Great work!
Thank you for giving it a shot!
You're definitely right. I made the bulk of the game, basically the entire map, in one sitting last night. Now that I'm rested up I can definitely see how even the tutorial is asking too much initially.
Still, very impressive!
