Loved the idea, I also like how the game progresses, I think a bit more of fluidity on the characters movement would have been a great addition. Congrats to the team!

Cool game and I loved the SFX for eating along with the visuals haha :D
I think the music is a little too peaceful, tho? Besides that, cool submission!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you liked it!

We had a debate about the music but in the end we kept this one, as we felt it was closer to the main source of inspiration, the Antediluvian short film

Reminded me of my favorite phase of Spore in an efficient and charmingly unique package

- Love the visual assets and think they fit great together, except maybe the funny looking fish which looked very different in rendering/texture but he looks funny enough I don't mind at all.
- Love so much that you included difficulty options. After losing very hard in medium switched it to easy and had fun.
- Really appreciate there was enough time in the jam to make a boss at all and was impressed he showed damage taken visually.

Wishlist/Random improvement ideas as tribute:
- The boss has a weird hitbox that confused me sometimes. Specifically I tried to stay behind him and bite his butt but sometimes just biting his ribcage seemed to damage me
- The boss movement looked erratic and very hard to predict/play around especially with its very long hitbox. It was funny and didn't overstay its welcome though. In a more complete context I think having it swoop left and right would've looked less jarring and felt more avoidably fair but tbh probably more boring and less memorable than the current version.

Good job :)

Developer

Thank you so much for the very detailed feedback.

The boss was added last and we didn't get the time to refine it. Our artist did a great job adding the hurt states so it's nice to see someone appreciated it explicitly :)

Before the boss healthbar appears, touching any part will hurt you. Once the healthbar appears, there are two hitboxes: one going from the head and across the neck which will hurt you, and a body one which hurts the boss.

On the afternoon of the deadline I was frantically trying to add skeletal animation to it so the movement looked smooth, but did not manage to get it working in time, so we stuck with sprite animation and the boss following a fixed path around the level.

And I have yet to play Spore :)

love the art style, loved feeling the progression viscerally through the scale. Very nice entry.

Developer(+1)

Glad you found the progression satisfying! Thanks for the feedback.

The game feel in this is great, it's very well put together. I think there should be some sound effect when another animal eats, probably a different one from the player's; when I first saw eaten remains out of the corner of my eye, I thought they were being destroyed by a bug. The Plesiosaurus made a good tricky boss. I thought it would be really easy, but the long neck made it harder to avoid retaliation when going in for a strike. Great game!

Developer(+1)

Glad you liked it and thanks for the feedback. good point on having a different sound for when other creatures do the eating. For the boss, was it obvious that you have to bite the body while avoiding the neck and head?

Submitted(+1)

After having the avoiding to that neck for so long before the boss fight, the thought of targeting it never came to me!

This was awesome! Good use of the theme and the zooming feels amazing :D The art looks so good!

Developer

Glad you liked it!

Submitted(+1)

The zooming out to indicate progression is really slick.  Enjoyed playing through.

It'd be nice if you replaced the cursor with something more visible, I found myself losing mine against the background frequently.

Developer

Thank you, that's a very good point about the cursor.

Submitted(+1)

Really solid progression. It makes sense immediately and then once it starts to zoom out its just so satisfying to get to the next tier of food. Great controls and visual style too!

Developer

Thank you so much for the positive feedback! Happy you liked it.

Submitted(+1)

Fun!! :) Whenever I saw something big I was like "Oh I can't wait to eat that" lol

Developer

That's the spirit! Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Really liked this game! The game reminded me of the early game of Spore. The artstyle and music fit really well together and overall the game feels really well polished.

Developer

Damn, now I really need to play Spore. You're the second person to mention it. Glad you enjoyed it!

I absolutely adored the art style in this one

Loved the artstyle and music, very unique!

Developer

Thank you Larvi! Glad you liked it.

Very relaxing game! I really love the artstyle and the amount of analogue "collage-based" artstyles in this jam. The music is lovely too. Great job!

Developer

Happy you liked it. MrMankus put a lot of effort into the art, nice to see appreciation for it :)

Submitted(+1)

Very nice! Love the take on the theme and the 'there's always bigger fish' approach. Good one, I think the controls could be a little little better, it gets weird then you are close to the mouse pointer. Overall, nice submission!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! We've had a bit of a struggle with the controls, and refactored them once.

Submitted(+1)

Fun game and unique art style! Gameplay reminded me of the early game in Spore

Developer

So happy you liked it! I'll be honest, I haven't played Spore, but now I'm curious. Thank you!

Submitted(+1)

Hey fellow member of the procedurally animated monster club! I enjoyed playing your game :) I've never felt so relaxed while consuming everything in sight.

Developer

Thank you so much for the feedback. Our characters do look alike, don't they? :)

Submitted(+1)

Great artwork! I'd suggest picking a random pitch_scale between 0.9,1.1 on the AudioStreamPlayer when you play the eating sound, so it doesn't sound like you're playing the same sound over and over. I beat the boss! Good job!

Developer

I did not think of that for sound variation! We do have different sounds for whether you munch on a predator or prey, but that's a brilliant suggestion. Thank you for the constructive feedback! I don't know if we'll expand on this game in the future, but this sounds like a quick win!

the game that makes it feel THE BEST . THE BEST GAME EVER ,really hard to beat ,nice game keep it up

Developer(+1)

Wow! That is quite the praise. Thank you!

Submitted(+1)

Very fun game and easy to understand. The art is really cool, especially the main character's movement. Good work!

Developer

Happy you liked it! SineNomine2001 and MrMankus put a lot of effort into making the Leviathan, nice to see their work being appreciated!

Submitted(+1)

Sadly I died on the Plesiosaurus, but was really a fun game, learning all kind of paleozoic animals at the same time, well done :)

Developer(+1)

Fun fact: I have yet to beat the Plesiosaurus on medium difficulty on the released build. So happpy you found the game fun and educational :)
