Lived, Learned, Looking to Try

So this is my first game jam, and I came in rather ambitious to it. I wanted to try to make an idea of a game that I had in mind but didn't quite have the best ideas on how to entirely code it so I kinda took it as a challenge to try to create that game for the Jam. That game being a sandbox game (akin to 2D Minecraft or Core Keeper) where you'd be able to go from area to gather resources and survive against a storm.   And honestly, it came out not too bad, but between the tutorials I needed to look up, some of the code that I tried to implement from said tutorials or my own ideas and some code not really working out, I ultimately didn't come out with the best of products at the end of the day and it even has one coding oversight of something I did last second that makes it so it isn't really functional at all with what I submitted unfortunately. That said, it was still good fun and honestly with another day or a few to work with I could honestly iron out the game to be what I had hoped for it to be in the first place. It was also fun to challenge myself to learn some new code for a game type I had no idea how to code and it really wasn't that bad, though I definitely have some places to better optimize it overall. That said, definitely maybe look into tutorials before the actual jam rather than during it, to save time and perhaps submit a higher quality (and fully functioning game).

But that all said, I'm looking to try and rate some of the other games out there and see what all I can that others have created in that same space of time, so please do comment some of your games you submitted and I'll see what I can get to.

Also if you care for it, even though it's broken and doesn't really work fully, here's my game Stormbound: /jam/shovel-jam-2025/rate/3738766

Hey I get the feeling of wishing I'd done a touch more research before the event proper. I wasn't a coder for the jam, only an artist; but I'd never done pixel art before! I knew I agreed to help my friend with the game assets since he's not the best with making art himself. But I myself had never really done pixel art before! I've played a lot of arcade-type games so I felt I had a good feel of the "look" I wanted to go for but man was it intimidating actually getting into figuring out how Aseprite worked... I was familiar with digital art but woah making pixel art feels like an entirely new process compared to how I usually go about drawing! But regardless of the slight stress, I think I also managed to pull through with some decent designs in the end! Not my best work, far from, but enough to say I'm proud to have contributed!

This is the game by the way! If you're curious, I helped make the items, the enemies, the bomb + explosion, and even the special encounter at the very end! ;D I definitely feel like we can improve on a lot of aspects of the game for a potential steam release! And same goes for your project as well! Even well after the game jam is over I bet you can polish up your project to improve upon it so it's in an even better state than this initial submission release! Or maybe even step away from it for a but so you can learn more and expand your knowledge so you can come back to it with a more experienced mindset!

But whichever you decide to do, be proud that you completed a project! Making a game is hard, I can barely comprehend coding and I doubt just making the art holds a candle to the entire process of game development. But this was fun to participate in regardless!

Yeah, I had made the move to pixel art too last year when I first started up my Game Dev journey, and it was a bit of a rough one to get the grasp of. But Asperite does have some decent tools to use once you get the hang of it. You also did very well all things considered and brought together some pretty solid sprite work from what I saw from your game. I'd recommend the others that see this post to give their game out a try too, it's pretty well designed all in all.

I'll look to make something from my game eventually, but I've got some games I need to finally get around to releasing on Steam first. If your team does get around to releasing your own game on Steam though, do let me know and good work on your part for you game and pushing through the challenges that came with learning pixel art in such a short time

Fellow newbie here! I also realized making games is hard after joining the jam, my game actually had 90% of it's planned content cut due to my lack of knowledge with EVERYTHING, I was also very ambitious like you, I understand all the struggles, it's honestly a miracle that everyone can get a game finish within such a short time span, good job everyone!

Here's my game called Wiggles! I even made a funny trailer for it! ✨

Absolutely understand that. Not to keep prattling on with what you already said, even outside of a jam setting, to get code to go right and feel right in a way that works is hard! That’s why it’s kind of been Shovel’s mantra that even if you just submitted, you’ve done amazingly and deserve praise - cause you do! I’m glad you had fun at the very least and I’m sure you’ll continue to do so (like me! And so many others!).

Hi, it's also my first jam so some things don't work as I had trouble exporting all the documents. Thank you.

Simplicity does work sometimes and yours pulls it off effectively, I'd say

/jam/shovel-jam-2025/rate/3737737. I'm also new to game jams and totally relate to your struggle. I had some prior coding experience, but my game is still pretty buggy and unfinished because I ran out of time. Still, I'd appreciate feedback for it.

Dont beat yourself up too much about it, your game came out pretty well

No matter how unfinished your game is, how much content you've had to cut or how polished it ended up being: You published it, and that's what you should take out of this. Being a game dev is not easy and you will always have problems, there will always be a hidden bug or you will never have enough time unless it's you who can control it. When the Jam ends, extend your game, upgrade it to a state you would like better and for more people to see!

The experience you'll gain from this will be really useful for the future. I had the same problem and I had to not only cut half the game's content, but rush out the last room due to time constraints so it's nothing like I would have wanted, but I'm still proud of what I've done. I wish you good luck making games and in any Jam you enter in the future!

Yeah, I do feel like with some extra time I could've accomplished things but focused too much on learning amidst the Jam rather than before it. Regardless it was a good experience, and having that knowledge now and seeing how I was able to put it all together and get it just about there is satisfying. That and I have better knowledge about this whole experience now to prepare for the next one to come. Overall, its a solid experience for anyone, even those that submit something similarly to me as I've come to realize.

Regardless, a foundation for something has been built and can be further built upon without a time limit, and I'll do a bit more for this game as a proof of concept, but I do have some other games that I need to finish first before I truly recognize my own submitted game's full potential. I wish you luck as well in your own journey to come
