Ranked from 240 ratings. Score is adjusted from raw score by the median number of ratings per game in the jam.

How does the game fit the theme?
The core gameplay loop relies on progressing through each level by choosing a new upgrade, but you're also forced to take a debuff. This fits the theme as you have to weigh your risk/reward balance to get as far as you can and manage the chaos of your own choices.

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
The map tileset, the player character sprite, the enemy sprites, the UI icons, and a handful of sfx come from free to use packs and sources such as Kenney assets. A full list of credits is on the game's page.

Everything else - the code, music, and sound effects - are all made from scratch.

Very fun game with an interesting take on the them I like the idea of combining a bonus with a drawback.

Kinda reminds me of Journey of the Prairie King in Stardew Valley. Overall fun game, I do like the risk mechanic and being able to make a build that works. A few more enemies would have been a nice addition, but I only got to round like 18 so maybe there are and I didn't see them. Overall pretty great project good job!

Thank you! The Stardew comparison is really flattering ^^ I considered going deeper with more enemy types and the risk mechanic but I decided it was wiser to limit the scope and polish what I had for the jam version. If I work more on this in the future that’s definitely the first thing I would work on!

Very clean and simple game! While playing, I found myself wondering if I had already seen all the content. If there were diverse skill trees, I would definitely spend a lot of time getting lost in it. This game has so much potential!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing and the feedback! I definitely forced myself to lock in the scope to keep things simple for a jam game, but I had a lot of ideas for different tiers of risk/rewards, weapons, and unlockable skills to really add depth that I’d love to build up on someday!

Really fun game even though I got bullied by skeletons!

Being a wizard is such hard work!

Sick! Very similar to mine, in a way, haha. I loved the artstyle and the sounds! Loved the randomness of the upgrades too.

Hits:

  • Quite the fun shmup! The fun factor is definitely there!

Opportunities:

  • More bullet types/weapons to add some diversity to the gameplay styles.
  • In some cases, certain buff/debuff setups didn’t provide anything that I objectively wanted; it’s an effect of randomness but I ended up choosing the “least bad” combination.
  • Boss battles and bigger, badder enemies; if they were there I didn’t manage to see them but having some level of progression will definitely keep people going.

Overall: A solid jam entry about a wizard that has to kill enemies in a twin-stick shooter style! Great work! ✨

Developer

Thank you for the constructive feedback! I had considered increasing complexity with more weapon and enemy types and bosses and the works, but I felt more comfortable pulling back the scope for a jam prototype.

I definitely could’ve made the risk/rewards more engaging, though, I was honestly just trying to hit a minimum of ~20 total options just to have a variety.

But thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it for what it is.
