Description
Empyreal Jetsam is a hypothetical RPG for the Super Nintendo. The album was composed for the SNES SPC700 chip using Furnace and can play on SNES hardware.

Once a year, you travel to a dock where the boundaries between realities are thin and meet a prince from another world.

This year, the prince is mysteriously absent and has left you a concerning message in a bottle. He tells you that you must travel to the deepest part of his underwater kingdom to rescue him, and if you fail, his world will be torn asunder.

In the Empyreal Jetsam, everyone you meet is the embodiment of something lost in the ocean. Will you save the prince from his fate, or will you become lost to the waves yourself?

1. The Adventure Begins

The opening cutscene. We're introduced to the dock that connects the human realm and the Empyreal Jetsam, and we learn that the prince is in danger.

"I'm sorry to bother, but I really need your help."

2. Message from the Prince:

Theme for the prince, the embodiment of toys lost to the ocean. This plays initially when you enter the Empyreal Jetsam and find the prince's magical staff named Acrylon. She will play back the prince's travel logs to teach you about the kingdom.

"I didn't have much time, but I left behind Acrylon to help protect you. Don't forget to feed her!"

3. Something's Fishy:

Plays in the Accursed Shallows. Was that something in the corner of your eye, or did you just imagine it?

"I heard a rumor that the embodiment of souls lost to the sea haunts this area. Gives me the heebie-jeebies!"

4. Bigger Fish To Fry

It turns out the Accursed Shallows is NOT haunted by the embodiment of souls lost to the sea. It's haunted by Hardtack, the embodiment of food dropped in the ocean, and they're tired of people making fun of them. They donned a disguise and fooled everyone into being afraid. Now you've come along to ruin it.

"Before... I was nothing but seagull food... but now... the seagulls run away when I get close..."

5. Sniff Em Out

The locals say somebody around here has been stealing trinkets. It's time to put on your detective hat.

"Unfortunately, you're going to need to get your hands dirty for this one."

6. Finders Keepers

Theme of Jules, the embodiment of treasure lost in the ocean. He's amassed quite the collection.

"Ya know, every time a disgruntled bride throws their wedding ring in the ocean, that's another score for me. Thanks for keeping my fingers warm, ladies!"

7. Losers Weepers

Battle theme for Jules. He's sort of a glass cannon.

"Hey, careful! That stuff is expensive! And so am I!"

8. Tide You Over

Theme for Saltswept Village. The prince has all sorts of tips about tourist destinations in his travel logs.

"Some say that if you gaze into a piece of sea glass, you can see your future. I think that's a bunch of baloney!"

9. Allodial Dispute

You finally reach the prince and find that he's been brainwashed by his father, the embodiment of pollution. You must fight him in order to save him and his kingdom. This one's for all the marbles.

"..."

10 Farewell From the Prince:

All good things must come to an end.

"This time next year?"

Message from the artist
Thank you for listening!

Theme

Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
The concept for the game was inspired by the dock picture. I like the idea of an innocuous dock being the connection between two worlds. Are you brave enough to walk right off the edge and see where it takes you?

Curious soundtrack, there's quite a few styles here and it'd be quite a strange game for it. Very solid composition though.

Fun soundtrack! This is great gaming music :)

Now THIS sounds like a video game!! For an SNES game, the samples do feel a little too polished, but that's not a genuine criticism. I would love to hear these songs come out of old CRT speakers!

I love entries like this. leaning HARD into the game OST aspect. The cover art is fire and I love that each song is such a reasonable length. They never get repetitive or bland because they never overstay their welcome which is perfect.

The style of music is perfect too. Finders Keepers was such a treat with the vocal parts it felt so genuine to an SNES game which I get was on purpose but even the vibes of the music feel like they fit the era!

HOLY SHIT just the first track alone won me over.

This is a really majestic entry, I'm really impressed with it and it's my favorite at the moment of writing this.
I love everything about it, the composition and melodies are so good, charming and expressive, it left a really amazing impression on me, it's really creative (I don't think that I have seen someone else submit a chiptune-oriented entry for this jam like this) and I like the story it tells too...

I definitively should check out more of your work, this alone really impressed me and I'm not that easy to win over like that.

BRO I REALLY FW THIS. There were so many "WOW" and stank face moments for me throughout this whole OST. Standouts were Sniff Em Out, Tide You Over, that little chill breakdown in Allodial Dispute and Farwell. Really cohesive as well. Great job!

I agree with Jen, just really really good writing, that fits right in with the SNES vibe, and hits a lot of balance and nuance -  like Tide you Over feeling mysterious to match the quote while beachy, etc. Everything's really cohesive, polished too!

Another peak hidden gem for me to listen to !!!!!!!!!! Amazing job! really picked the essence of music on the old consoles. Really well done!!!

Absolutely stunning, the theme of the sea was perfectly captured in many unexpected and different ways, every music fits (except maybe Something's Fishy? It feels a bit too lighthearted considering the context, but it's still really well composed nonetheless)

The Prince's theme is a definite favourite, his leitmotif is just soo good. (Weirdly enough reminds me of Freaky Fred's theme from Courage the Cowardly Dog, it has a dreamlike quality to it)

The characters seem like a lot of fun, I'd love for them to be illustrated some day. I think it's clever how the embodiment of lost toys was brainwashed by pollution, one feels like a negative extreme of the other in a cool way

Usually I really don't like "Quirky character vocals" but I don't know, Jules won me over (also his battle theme has a squarish electric guitar in it? Reaaaaally remind of Plok's Beach theme, it's awesome)

This is unrelated to the songs, but the cover art for this is gorgeous, really eye-catching.

Anyway, great job!
