Description
You get an email inviting you to a celebration in the oceanside village you were born. You haven't been there in ages, but it would be nice to see your people again. Nothing should go wrong!

- Intro -
The Benthic Hour Is a narrative mystery about something very wrong happening in your home village by the ocean. It's heavily inspired by Spike Chunsoft mystery games (999, Danganronpa, Somnium Files) and other mysteries like Ghost Trick (play that). My goal with this soundtrack was to tell as much of that story as possible through the soundtrack, which meant making more songs for one album than I've ever made before.

- Story/Track Overview -
The general overview of the story is that once you get to the village you find yourself in a time loop. Every night something ends up happening where the village is destroyed and everyone is killed, including you. Somehow you wake up at the beginning of the day though, and so it's up to you to figure out what's going on. You uncover a laboratory researching strange technology, explore a sunken ship that has things it shouldn't, and uncover the true culprit.

Surface Level
This is the main menu song, essentially being the image prompt directly. I tried to make it quiet and somewhat distant/familiar-sounding with just the piano and guitar, as if it were overlooking the sea.

Familiar Faces
This is the song that plays for the first day you arrive at the village. You're catching up with all the residents and it's a great time! It's a bit awkward since everyone's been living here their whole life, but they're mostly the same as you remember. The celebration is tomorrow, so you head to bed for some good sleep.

A Lively Catch
This is the second day at the village when you're mostly hanging out with your best friend from childhood. She's a bit of a gremlin that gets up to shenanigans, and you two have a ton of fun together. She's happy to have you here, though strangely most of the village, while friendly, seems to act weird when talking to you about the celebration that you were invited to. It's a real thing that's happening, but invitations aren't normal. You were born in the village though, so people are mostly accepting of it. Still, nobody's sure who sent it or why, it might have been a mistake?

Run It Back
This marks the turning point in the game, and this song would be played at the end of each loop. Before, instruments were familiar and bright. Not anymore. That night, while everyone is gathered around the docks, strange things begin to happen. A loud explosion is heard in the distance, interrupting the celebrations. At the same time, some people start collapsing. Everyone's been poisoned, including you. You only begin to see a massive whirlpool forming in the water with... something inside of it. Before you know it, you're completely unconscious.

This one is actually all of the other songs rendered, reversed, played at the same time and heavily processed. I used Emergence (a granulator), compression, spectral gate, disperser, vocodex, more compression, some reverb, and delay a bunch of times rendering all of it out etc etc. Also, un-snapping and automating the delay time can produce some REALLY cool textures!

Please Don't Touch the Electronics
After waking up you realize it's the same day looping in on itself, you decide to do some researching. Apparently a number of people from the village went missing a while ago. One of these people was the head of a sprawling marine biology lab which is now abandoned. After some more digging, you find out where this lab is located and begin exploring. While there you find a lot of research around the local marine life, their defense mechanisms, what they eat, and so on. One more recent line of logs details what appears to be camouflaging technology akin to that of an octopus they have in captivity. Eventually you come across some broken containers that appear to be where they were holding the octopus, but these are much, much larger than you would expect for a regular octopus.

Of all the Buttons to Press
In the final lab log, you learn that the specimen was taken from a ship that crashed just outside the docks a number of years ago. While this is valuable knowledge, in getting this knowledge you've tripped a security system causing a countdown to begin before the lab destroys itself. While trying to escape, you notice a shadow moving away from you in the halls ahead. Trying to catch up to that shadow, you find yourself at a dead end. And with that, you explode with the rest of the lab before waking up in the morning.

There's Nothing in the Water
With the help of your friend, you manage to snag some diving gear and explore the ship you heard of in the logs. It's a large ship that has a number of cargo holds, though one of these holds was clearly keeping something alive and strange. There's bones of many large fish, some eaten cleanly through.

A Really Big Shadow
It's dark, but something is moving down here. Whatever it is, it's at least as large as you and is aware of your presence. Given a sudden burst of confidence from your ability to not die, you boldly find yourself giving chase once more. It doesn't feel like it's running from you though, it's leading you somewhere deep in the ship. On the way you find a number of skeletons from the crew that didn't escape. When you get to the final dead end though, you find a body with a diving suit on. The suit has mostly kept the body in tact, and you recognize this person. This man is still alive, and he's in the town. Unfortunately before you can act on this information, you find that giving chase has depleted all of your air. You find yourself awake in the morning once more, ready to put all the pieces together.

The Benthic Hour
I'm not entirely sure exactly what happens in between the last song and this one, other than that you put together what the full story is. A number of years ago the ship crashed, and on it carried a strange octopus that was able to camouflage itself as people. It was injured, and the people on the crew tried to help. When the ship crashed, the creature was given to the head marine biologist to care for. With this creature he researched a technology that allowed him to become different people and he ended up not caring for the creature. The head of the marine lab is alive and has disguised himself as the man you found on the ship. He's set on stealing back the creature he lost and continuing his research with it. In order to do this he plans to take advantage of the one day of the year when it comes back and the village celebrates its arrival to kill everyone and capture it. It's actually the creature's power that was allowing you to loop through time, it's been helping you the entire time!

Now all you need to do is kill this crazed marine biologist who is hiding in his lab. This song plays while you're running through and giving him what's coming.

Message from the artist
Not being able to make the same genre twice in a row (I dunno why it's the only way creativity/inspiration works for me) definitely complicated this, but I think I learned a ton about making a somewhat cohesive soundtrack! Got a lot of info to take into the next jam. Huge thanks to Alex Kale for hosting some more music jams that let me experiment with a ton of techniques and approaches that I got to try out here :>

Aside from that, music is awesome and cool and awesome.
Thanks for listening and stay cooking! <3

Yeah this is just fucking peak dude

Developer

Thank you! It was a ton of fun to work on :)

Really fun trip through a wide array of moods! Well composed and everything sounded crisp and beautiful. I can relate to being chronically unable to stay in a genre, but I'm glad it worked out for you 'cause those are 9 excellent tracks that feel cohesive. I think Don't Touch the Electronics into Of All the Buttons to Press was probably my favorite sequence overall.

Developer

Thank you! I think those might also be my two favorites, though then again I'm biased with edm brain hehe :>

Very fun and light hearted! Love it. Beautiful work here! Those last two tracks were real bangers for me! Wow!

Developer

Thank you!!!

Surface Level - Beautiful opening theme with a vast, spacious mix.

Familiar Faces - Quite the switch up from the first track but still feels cohesive. I like the high frequency information from the starting guitar, so when it transfers to the piano at 0:35, it feels like something’s missing. Nice development at 1:00!

A Lively Catch - I absolutely love the groove and chords in this track!

Run it Back - An intriguing and mysterious ambient piece.

Please Don’t Touch the Electronics - Another extremely groovy track! Love the development at 1:35 - I felt like it was needed!

Of all the Buttons to Press - Just an all around masterful application of a techno track in a game soundtrack.

There’s Nothing in the Water - Really great use of mixing, low frequencies, and dissonance to convey danger.

A Really Big Shadow - Builds nicely on the previous track with well placed orchestral elements.

The Benthic Hour - Good job bringing the guitar back for this track. Nice combination of orchestra with the chopped up breakbeat for this epic final encounter!

This definitely feels like a complete soundtrack with high quality composition, storytelling, and production. While I felt that the soundtrack is ultimately more cohesive than not (especially considering the different styles needed for this type of game), I think there might be room to add guitar to a few more tracks for extra cohesion. However, I did not think it was enough to detract from the spectacular writing and production of the soundtrack—the grooves and glitched sounds were highlights for me. This was a wonderful submission that I enjoyed listening to!

Developer

Thank you! I really appreciate the detailed breakdown, and I agree with the criticisms here! Sneaking some more guitar into each track would be a good idea, gonna have to note that down for the next jam :]

Submitted(+1)

This is really nice! Highlights are the electronic tracks in the middle and the end.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Electronic music my beloved 🙏🙏🙏

Submitted(+1)

Loved the chord progression in Surface Level (especially one moment at 1:23, gave me them chills). Fantastic guitar work (I assume recorded live? at least it sounds like it was), expert level use of textures the production quailty was just 🤌 The Benthic Hour is my favorite track I think, I really enjoyed how it merged the guitar with the more electronic elements, felt really intense but also quite lyrical! Amazing album, 12/10

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you for the kind comment! Mixing electronic and acoustic stuff in genres like artcore has always been the coolest thing to me so to hear that about the title track is very encouraging! I did forget to mention that the guitar wasn't actually played live, it's all programmed (including the slides and whatnot) using Session Guitarist Picked Acoustic from Kontakt

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

Personal highlights:

"A lively catch" => great riffs and dynamic, the tapped guitar reminds me of Andy McKee's work,

"Please don't touch the Electronics" => I love that minimalist and almost trappy beat that drives the pads and synths forward.

"Of All Buttons to Pres" => goes full techno, and great music.

Only nitpick is the gain (I would've push the limiter on the mix), but that's just me and it doesn't hinder what is overall a brilliant soundtrack.

Developer

Thanks for the comment! Definitely agree that it's a bit quiet, I was gonna export all of em and do some normalizing but time management was not on my side haha 🙃

Surface Level: The music immediately feels like it is ingrained in the ambience and is part of the world, which helps paint the picture of what you are imagining in your story once you select “start game”.

Familiar Faces: This is a really fun and classically feel-good town theme. I think the laid back Latin percussion rhythm really helps this along with the beautiful chord progressions and light instrumentation. I especially like the background flute parts!

A Lively Catch: The guitar, bass, and keys work so well together in this track. This feels like a very natural genre for you to work in. This is a fun one for sure!

Run It Back: This is a cool and creative way to create a track. It works well for the ambience of a doomsday confusion fog.

Please Don’t Touch the Electronics: Not only did you create a lab theme, but this is unequivocally a marine biology lab theme. I don’t know how you did it, but there are both aquatic and mechanical vibes in this track. My favorite part is the warbly flutter at the end of the first bar in each 2 bar phrase.

Of all the Buttons to Press: Wow this is a change in pace and style! The quality of this is pretty impressive. I don’t know this genre enough to comment much, but it sure is fun to listen to!

There’s Nothing in the Water: This is a nice ominous ambient track that takes the story in a haunting direction. The swells in this track and the deep percussion hits are very impressive and very satisfying.

A Really Big Shadow: I think it is really cool that you used the previous track as a base for this one and built on it vertically to create an ominous track with more direction. Your percussion is quite epic and is my favorite part of this!

The Benthic Hour: This is a really interesting track that seems to combine all of the elements of all the tracks you made to give us an acoustic breakbeat horror ambient track. You just made your own genre!

Overall: This was a journey! So many different styles, all executed so well, with fun musical ideas that take us from one scene to the next. There’s not much I can say that hasn’t already been said in the other comments, but I will reiterate how impressive this was! Thank you for sharing!

Thank you so much for the detailed track breakdown! It's really cool seeing people's thoughts on each track, especially coming from someone so skilled in musical storytelling :)

instant 25 stars no questions asked, THE GOAT micerama strikes again

ok but in all seriousness HOW?!??!?!? the variety in genres and the way you just execute them PERFECTLY. the mixing, choice of instruments, composition, i mean EVERYTHING!!!! my personal favs have to be:

- a lively catch: nuff said, the guitar RULES, catchy keys, very headbangable

- please don't touch the electronics: holy electro i need to study ur music, super clean mixing, huge fan of the drums

- a really big shadow: this style of music kinda reminds me of taishi if you have heard of him, super cool trance artist i highly recommend hehe :)))) this particular track reminds me of "wasteland of the depths" from him !

- the benthic hour: the breaks and the fading saw synths, stellar composition as always, THE MIXING!!!!! DUDE!!!!!!! the panning beeps are SO GOOD i'm stealing that idea :3 AND THE DROP !!!!

best 21 mins i've spent in this jam, keep up the absolute pulchritudinous work.

Developer

Thank you so much for the kind words! I'll have to add pulchritudinous into my personal vocabulary lol. After checking out Wasteland of the Depths, holy banger, I'm definitely gonna listen to more of this guy. I love the AD:Piano series and must've missed this one! One of my personal favs from the series has gotta be from Sad Keyboard Guy :>

I don't usually curse when doing these ratings but this is fucking incredible man. Good fucking shit. 5 STARS ACROSS THE BOARD. Benthic Hour is peak.

Developer

Thank you so much!!! 😭

First of all, the interpretation of the theme and the story you've gone with for this soundtrack is great. It works really well for the theme and is perfect for the soundtrack you've written. The opening track is super relaxing and intriguing, absolutely love the subtle complexities in the drum track like the fast hits on that ride cymbal. Familiar Faces is pretty great as a homely village kinda song, big Animal Crossing vibes. Lovely guitar composition.

That organ on A Lively Catch is so smoov. It all sounds really professional, just some excellent songwriting. Like the way the guitar turns back with some intricate picking at the end of some phrases gets me GOIN'. Really cool. The switch up to the creepy tones of Run It Back feels right here as well. Great little soundscape on this one.

Then we have some very effective electronics on the next track, that crescendo in the bassy synth rules...as does the descending chords sequence towards the end (love that this kind of thing comes back throughout the soundtrack too). Then acid bass on Of all the Buttons to Press?! This is going places...extremely well produced. I legit can't imagine doing all this in 10 days.

The underwater, spacey spookiness of There's Nothing in the Water works great, love the panning of the hats and other percussive elements. The way this one then leads into A Really Big Shadow is kinda masterful as well...I think this is my fave soundtrack that I've listened to in this Jam. It all just sounds great and the songwriting is at a very high level. A lot going on, but never too much and, while the genres keep switching it up, there's a consistency that I can't quite articulate that seems to keep it all together. It's weirdly cohesive considering how different it all is and I can feel a story playing out through the music even without the (highly entertaining) story you've come up with.

Holy wow, the drums on The Benthic Hour. Such a cool climax. Especially once the piano melodies weave their way in closing out back to the pastoral feeling of the acoustic guitar. Great stuff.

I've been trying to put little bits of constructive criticism in all the reviews I've done so far, but I genuinely can't think of much to say here. At a stretch there were maybe a couple of times where I thought an instrument sounded a little bit "stock" or rigid, but, it's extremely rare and, considering the breadth of ideas and genres here put together over just 10 days, not exactly surprising. Oh, the one other tiny thing I didn't personally love was the way the acoustic guitar faded out at the end. I think it should've played a bit longer before fading or maybe played out a nice little final melody to really bring it home, but that's just me (this is also an extremely tiny critique).

The whole thing is really just awesome. My highest rating for sure.

Developer

Thank you for the super detailed comment! When it came to tying all the tracks together I figured that if the genres were gonna be inconsistent anyways I'd keep a lot of the melodic content similar, so pretty much all of the songs are in the same key and stay around the D note, with the repeated downwards section repeating in the latter half of the songs in the latter half of the album. Figured it'd make sense in a game about the same day repeating in different ways haha, I'm glad the approach seemed to work out!

As for the ending, I agree that it definitely could use some changes. I'd like to do more with the guitar and maybe have like a horn section or something but the climax was made after waking up in a cold sweat at 3AM the day submissions were closing thinking that the previous version was really bad (it originally used the downwards chord progression and did NOT work lmao). Thank you again for the comment!

meant to review this last night, but sleepiness overtook me ...

first track has a really nice ambience! i like the progression in the piano line. your composition here is really fitting for the vibe you were going for in the main menu theme. very distant and mysterious. love the rhythmic plucking of the strings! the percussion is a good driving force as well.

sweet introduction to the storyline! it really feels playful and nostalgic, with that exploratory vibe. the melodic line in the piano and flute is very nice. i really like the movement in the strings and piano. i like the bossa-nova-like percussion in the background with the repetitive dotted eighth snare clicks. good use of dynamics here, but i do feel that sometimes the melody was a little overpowered. didn't take away from the experience at all, love this track!!!!

oo this track is very nice!! the guitar seems live recorded!! i really like the improv-inspired electric piano line. the chord progression is lovely! it's a nice character theme, love it!!!!!!

woahh this one is such a turn from the last two tracks, and not a bad one at all! loving the ambience in this one. it really is befitting of the surreal plot happening while this plays. loving the timbre of the instruments here. wonderful ambient!!

ooo i rly like this track! very electronic and fitting of the scene of a laboratory. very immersive and i love your use of panning here. i do think the melody could've developed a little faster, but it's late start didn't take away from the experience at all. this track lovely and thoughtfully made, wowowowow love the development at 1:36, the chord progression is nice!

really feels like a nice chase scene!!! your plotline here is really well thought out, and i like how the events in the celebration tie into what happens in the lab. REALLY nice use of percussion here. i really feel like i can picture the events happening. this is one of my favorite tracks of yours in this submission!!!

another dark ambience captured effectively! really gives the feeling of being in an abandoned shipwreck underwater. loving the swelling ambience, almost feels like the swell of the tide. if i heard this in a game i would literally crap myself like i would be so terrified

ooo i like how this one reflects the same melodic themes introduced in the prior track! really feels like a discovery and some sort of reflection. the intense percussion is a nice touch, and i like the orchestral instrumentation here! well done!!!!

the percussion here is nice as well! hello amen break ... i like how it slowly builds into the battle theme, really befitting of a final boss theme. the climax around 2:04 is a really nice touch!!!  the way the track slowly develops and builds on itself is really reflective of the plotline so far, and the climax really ties the end together.

overall your storytelling here is top notch!!!!! i really loved following along with the OST with your plot in mind. really fun listen, thanks for sharing! :DDDDDD

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for the comment! So much of this was focused on telling the story and seeing how much of it comes through is incredibly cool! I totally agree with the criticisms here too, you mention in Please [...] Electronics that the melody could develop faster and I think it's something I'd like to make sure of in some of the others like the second half of A Lively Catch or There's Nothing in the Water. All of the guitar was actually programmed using Session Guitarist - Picked Acoustic from Kontakt (in the melody mode so not loops)!

Submitted(+1)

Definitely one of the most intriguing soundtracks out of the submissions. It mixes instrumentation and genres while maintaining the theme of the game. Great job!

Developer

It's a bit late, but thank you!

Submitted(+1)

WTF WE ALMOST HAD THE SAME IDEA (i swear bro i didnt copy you), this was so well done, i love the sound design and mixing in this, it’s so clean. honestly right, you executed this idea better than I did LOL great work

Developer(+1)

I was literally midway through playing Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward so the story might have been a little inspired lmao, the thing about timeloops is that you can always do so much with them and it's almost always cool. Your submission was sick as hell the whole way through, Spike Chunsoft must be putting something into their soundtracks that make music inspired by them better 🤔

Submitted(+1)

That was a wild ride!"Run it Back" was a really inspired, well-executed idea. I love the way the tone of the soundtrack changes from that point onward - from the electronic bop that is "Please Don't Touch the Electronics" into panic mode with "Of all the Buttons to Press" and switching things up again for the third loop and beyond. The simple piano chord progression that is re-used at the end of each song is a really cool touch that's both very effective and very easy to pick up on as a recurring motif.

Excellent job on this one, definitely one of my fave submissions out of the ~70 I've been able to listen to! And that includes idk,  eight other time loop stories? lmao (no hate, I love a good time loop)

Developer

Time loops really are fun haha, thank you for the comment! The progression being reused at the end of the songs felt fitting for a game about replaying the same day :]

Submitted(+1)

Epic melodies and top-notch production. There are some good tracks and some pretty dark ones. I like the very diverse soundtrack. My favorite is Of all the Buttons to Press for its unusual style and Run it Back for its cool ambient and also The Benthic Hour for dnb vibe.

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

A lot of submission in this jam start with an sea ambience followed by soft, distant melodies. But this one takes the cake in my opinion, the added small guitar strums carefully drive the melody without being overwhelming, as the melancholic piano establishes the general mood of the upcoming game: A beautiful village with a terrifying secret.

Familliar Faces is absolutely amazing, I managed to get what was happening without even having to read the title or description of the song lol. The guitar playing is absolutely phenomenal lol, reminds me of songs you hear in the background of chill animes. Of course, the bossa nova drums is the icing on of the cake haha.

A Lively Catch is defo one of my favs, it's very jazzy and energetic in all the right places, the electric piano really goes nicely with the guitar. While simillar to Familliar Faces, the melody is a bit somber this time around in a few places, forshadownig something more sinister.

Then Run it Back starts playing.

The friendly and uplifiting mood of previous soundtracks has been corrupted and mangled together, the only coherrent sound you can make out is one of an incessant clock. Ticking and ticking to no end, driving you crazy. You can hear quiet, sad guitar strums, reversed and delayed through the song, letting you know that it's not just you, but the whole village that is stuck in this cycle of torment.

Please Don't Touch the Electronics feels like it's straight up lifted from the Nonary Games' soundtrack lol, exploring an alien-like laboratory full of oddities and mysteries. It also slaps.

Of all the Buttons to Press reminded me how great this OST is at telling the story without needing words lol, you succeeded really well in that front. I could FEEL the countdown while listening to the song. The motifs from the previous song playing through it was a really nice touch, too.

There's Nothing in the Water has some really cool ambience going for it. That with the reversed piano sounds and alarm life risers makes for a terrifying experience as you explore the cargo holds

A Really Big Shadow smartly uses a lot of the previous song's ambience as backdrop while introducing powerful drums and strings, instead of focusing on the scare factor, this song focuses on intrigue: What is this great monster we're chasing? What lies at the end of this path we took? Is it worth it? Nevertheless, we're still determined to see things through.

The long awaited return of the accoustic guitar gives one confidence in overcomming the odds. This song is probably my favourite, it uses a lot of familliar melodies and instruments: the plucks from the lab, the ambience from the ship, the piano from the intro... Along with really cool breakcore drums. Really good final boss material. I also enjoyed how the "big scary monster" was actually helping you out the whole time, this game's story is pretty nice.

The fact that all of this was made in a week is astounding lol, a really great time. I can imagine a version of "Surface Level" playing at the end of the game after all our trials. I honestly don't have any critiques for this one lol, I enjoyed all of it, terrific job!

also your screenshots are very fun god i wish i did something like that for mine

Welp, just perfect. Take all my stars and leave.

Second time of the jam I give 25/25

High marks on everything, felt like credibly an A-list track on N64 or newer.  As a bedroom producer working a day job I recognize when something would take way longer than the jam timeframe for me, and this is right in that zone.

Superb set of pieces.

Cheers
