How does your game fit the theme?
The game fits the jam’s theme by using pentagons as limited spaces, where most randomly selected objectives can only be completed while standing inside them. The destruction of pentagons after each completed mission also reinforces the theme, since the player is left with less and less space to create strategies. All the art was made strictly with the allowed shapes in 2D style.

Anything else you'd like to share about your game or development process?
The theme was quite challenging, especially for me as a developer who usually enjoys building strong narratives in my games. This time, however, I chose to focus again on gameplay, trying to get the most out of the theme and the given limitations. It was tough, but I learned a lot and already consider that a big victory.

Hello :) !

I understand your review on my game. You handle greatly how to make a game juicy :) ! I have not  much to say, the realization is really good, maybe you can add score and flying numbers.

Oh cool the music changes depending on whether you stand in the pentagon or not, it feels like it's farther away. You've clearly put a lot of thought in the music too! Starting with a tutorial at the beginning of the game like this is definitely a big plus as well! You thought of everything! 🤘😊

GameMaker Gang!! Really fun entry, focusing on gameplay definitely paid off! The randomized challenges greatly increased replay-ability and kept me on my toes. Having to complete 5 challenges with 5 lives fit well with the pentagon theme, and resetting the players lives after a successful challenge was much appreciated. I ended up rage quitting after 5 or so attempts after I kept losing to the 3 or less health and special enemy challenges, but I had a lot of fun in my runs.

The art style is simple but an effective use of the allowed shapes and your little bits of visual polish take it to the next level. The pentagon animation after beating a challenge is a great example of this. The music and sfx are crunchy and fit the arcade feel superbly, 5/5 on audio for me. The gameplay fits the theme very well and the being confined to the limited space of the pentagon in different ways for each challenge made for some engaging gameplay.

One critique I have is that it was often too difficult to see enemy's yellow bullets (especially when on the light green or orange challenges) and this made for some frustrating deaths that felt outside of my control. I'm not sure how to go about fixing this but some more visual contrast between the enemy bullets and the rest of the environment would have been greatly appreciated. Overall, there is an impressive amount of visual juice and overall polish on top of a very solid gameplay loop that comes together in a very fun package, great entry!!

edit: also the tutorial is very well-executed, gets all the necessary info to the player in a very concise manner and then lets them get right into the action, kudos

A very strong entry with polished mechanics, creative design, and a clever take on the jam’s theme! It feels complete, fun to play, and shows clear effort and thought put into every aspect.

Game play / Fun / Engagement ●●●●●
Really nice game play! The movement feels smooth, and I love the different tasks combined with the creative use of colors and enemies. The mechanic of shooting enemies only within a specific space keeps the challenge fresh and engaging. It doesn’t get boring and is well executed and also it is not to hard as you regenerate after completing a task. A clear 5/5.

Art Style / Visuals ●●●●●
You used the given shapes in a very creative way, and the overall presentation looks great. Colors work nicely together and fit the mood. The only very minor thing is that text with outlines could maybe use a different color for better readability... but that doesn’t take away from the strong execution! A well-deserved 5/5 for this game.

Audio / Sound Design ●●●●○
The music is fitting, and the sound effects support the game play well. It does its job effectively. However, there’s nothing particularly unique or standout about the audio... Solid 4/5.

Theme ●●●●●
The theme interpretation is excellent. You can shoot enemies only when inside the limited space, which becomes even more restricted by the color requirement. This layered limitation is both clever and fun to play with. 5/5.

Some of the “missions” are easier than others. I had the hardest time when it came to “luring” enemies to an area as I the fire is not telegraphed and whenever I approached one it would fire in my face. This should be relatively easy to fix. Other than that great job.

Great concept! I liked doing the unique missions at each pentagon - it kept the gameplay fresh and interesting. The style was interesting and there were some fun animations that elevated the experience a lot, like when beating a mission. The tutorial at the beginning was definitely helpful but it took me a second to realize I had to find the matching pentagon color to do the missions.  Gameplay-wise it would be nice to have some sort of warning indicator when an enemy was about to shoot. Overall, great job!

You really did well with making the limited shapes stylish. The outlines, color palette, and the camera shake work together with retro-sound to make the game really feel really cool. The background music fits the fast-paced action.

The gameplay works great with the theme. Trying to dodge bullets and stay in the pentagon is challenging in a good way. It's cool that the game doesn't "punish" you for steeping out- you just can't accomplish the objectives, but if it saves you life, it's a good tactic!

I liked that the objectives are randomized, but I got "destroy special enemies" twice :)

Adding the tutorial was a good choice- this is not a VERY complex game, but it has enough rules, that explaining them before made sense.

Over all- great game!

Super fun game, loved the concept and had a really good time playing this! I think the main thing i liked was how the objectives are random, so there is enough variation in the gameplay . Some of the objectives are really difficult like staying in the moving pentagon :D but also a good thing to have some pacifist gameplay which is absent in most arena shooters so that was a relief! The use of the theme was also really creative and i think the overall balance was also well adjusted. Small suggestion i have would be to not make the player repeat the objectives which are already complete from the previous run.. i think this could make it even more fun!

Overall great job, really nicely done :)

This was really fun, just the right amount of screenshake and flashing outline to make my brain entertained. it took me a while to realise that we are doing different challenges for each pentagons, blue was my favourite haha. The dash was also implemented really well and looked so clean.

i do think the difficulty was quite high, it might be easier if less yellow enemies spawned. but other than that, gg.
