How does your game meet GBJam's theme?
Zhong Kui is a demonic figure who resembles a lot of bad luck deities but actually gets rid of demons and protects people from bad luck. He uses bats (another symbol of unlucky vibes turned positive) to fight animals (from the 5 unlucky animals) and ghouls

very fun. good character design and theme implementation works well. I think I had all 80000 of those demons from the start though! it definitely ramped up a bit quicker than I could upgrade. nice work

The theme is implemented really well, and I just love these kinds of games. Super great game!

Good implementation of the theme, capturing the essence of the Game Boy. This game has great potential, and you could add a lot of features in the future. As an improvement, I would slightly reduce the player's hitbox so the player can get closer to the enemies, and I would add power-ups like a rotating shield that surrounds the player, similar to the bats, which would block enemy projectiles, but without making them too abundant. A great game for this game jam, congratulations!

Good survivors-like and a great implementation of the theme in the context!

As others mentioned, the player hit-box seems big so it's finicky to try and get close enough to attack enemies without getting touched. Feels like there are other vectors that you could also play with for player scaling: radius that the bats circle the player, enemy projectile speed, shield that regenerates, etc.

Overall great work!

This was really fun! Felt like playing a survivors like on the old Gameboy. Would've been nice with a score count at the end, felt like I made it quite far but maybe not ^^ anyway the powerups worked great and it was a good amount of challenge. Some upgrades were hard to calculate, like the difference between 1 speed and 20% speed but overall everything played nicely. well done!

Excellent work making a survivors like with the limitations of a Gameboy is an impressive feat and the game is really fun too. Also I am happy you guys made it so if you get close enough to the pickup it moves towards the players position.  I learned something new from this game I never heard of the bearded demon daddy Zhong Kui before.

Good game, loved the art and everything, wish there was some more upgrades, and that the hitbox were a little smaller. Aside from that, it's a good game that fits the game boy nicely

The unluck gage is a nice addition fitting to the theme with the compromise it brings to the choices ! It's also nicely fitted to the GB spirit with this nice little art. Had fun playing even though I'm terrible, the enemies hitboxes felt a bit large at times where I felt like I was far enough to dodge.

You've got a solid game, good work !

Really enjoyed this survivors game! It's fun the lucky/unlucky mechanic because is like "oh I got more damage I'm stronger now" but suddenly monsters are harder to beat so it gets you engaged in trying to overpass that again.

The only thing I lacked on it was more feedback on hits, sometimes I didn't notice I was being hit til I died

Good work!

Well executed survivors like game!

Seems to be well balanced especially for the small screen.

we love to see a vampire survivors like where the dev recognizes the gospel of 'thing rotating around you' being the best type of weapon.

tricky to stay alive during the early parts! that combined with some of the more lackluster upgrades really contributed to the 'unlucky' feeling haha - and not in a bad way either, I liked the challenge, and it made the payoff of becoming a bat ball of death later even better. some sfx and some little secrets in the map and boom you got a stew going here

Excellent use of the colour palette, feels like it would be at home on even a gameboy color. Fun take on the Vampire Survivor. I enjoyed this game very much. Good work

Interesting implementation of a "vampire-survival" like game! Loved the art style.

The skulls buildup kept the pacing nicely, nice mechanic!
Very solid entry, congrats!

Fun

Nice to see other vampire survivors-inspired games :) I like that you can pick you poison when selecting upgrades, balancing risk vs reward. Good job!

Excellent game, very good spin on the survivor genre. Hard as nails too, the ranged enemies seem to have a lot of life for ranged enemies, and the melee ones are very squishy for melee, plus the radius of the bats is quite small, so it's easy to get hit.

It could do with some sound effects, but the music is very good, really loving it.

really like the premise! The menu and character art is striking, yet pleasant. The mechanics are a little bare, but competent and fun. I think the dual progression system is a good concept to build on, and I like how it clarifies the difficulty curve.

Great work!

Very fun! For the memes, increase bat radius by 1% or 2% upgrade? ;) good job team!

Feels like there is a ton of replayability here, i just wish you can start off with atleast another bat
