That was fun! The mechanics are competent, and the soundtrack is cool. That sliding effect is devious!

The LSDTRP effect might be a bit much; cycling through a rainbow effect might yield similar confusion with less headache.

The audio balance is a bit off at times; large combinations of sound effects end up being much, much louder than the baseline volume.

The paddle is somewhat hard to distinguish from the background at times, since most of the sprite is made up of the two lightest colors. I think the edge on top should have a harder outline.

All-in-all, good work! Congratulations on the submission!

A nice idea for the theme and well executed, the sounds are great too!

Developer

Thanks!

Nice game, and good interpretation of the theme.

One small bug: Sometimes the ball travels almost horizontally

Developer(+1)

Thanks. Yes you are correct, while not often, this can happen. I was thinking of a good way to prevent this, but didn't have enough time to properly implement something. I hope it didn't spoil the experience for you though :)

nice one . I love this sort of game but need a bigger paddle, as tricky playing on my laptop (mac). But well done i keep practicing

Developer

And the paddle can get even smaller! :D

Alleyway is probably my favorite Game Boy game, so this game is perfect for me.  Very interesting physics for the ball, I actually like its randomness as it prevents you from getting into an endless loop at the end of a level.  The power downs are interesting, I kind of wish there was some sort of description so you knew what exactly they would do to you.

Developer

Glad you like it! The ball shouldnt be random, since its not physics based, except for the "erratic" curse is currently active, though when you hit a brick corner the deflection angle can be unexpected. The paddle can change the angle as well depending on how far away from the center you bounce the ball so youre able to get the ball where you want it to, so that may also be what youre talking about.

I agree on the description, the shortened names in the curse list are not always clear. I'll actually add a short description on the game page :)

Simple execution, solid game!

I played this longer than a lot of other games at this jam :D

Also feels a lot like a game that could have existed on the game boy.

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it!

I often found the ball would "slide" on the paddle and go near horizontal which was annoying, but otherwise great game! Eventually died to the tiny paddle on stage 2 w/ score of 11,200. I quite liked the online leaderboard feature too.

Developer

Thanks and congrats on your score :)

I love breakout so this was right up my alley and I like that you added a global leaderboard I actually managed to get on it. Fun entry also slide is an evil perk to add lmao.

Developer

Thanks. Yea, some curses are rather easy to deal with, but I agree on slide being tricky some times even if its a rather simple thing :D

You got the gb aesthetic down so well! and awesome use of the secondary theme. I think my only issue is that some of the jinxes might have a need for an epilepsy warning. Other wise there is so much replayability here!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback.  I actually added an epilepsy warning in the description due to your remark, planned to do so and then forgot about it. Glad you enjoyed it so much :)

This was challenging, great idea using a classic and making the rewards a pain.

Developer

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Hope you made it into the Top 10 :D

Not much is as game boy as a Breakout clone, since the console launched with Alleyway. I like this take on the concept, as I've never played "What if Alleyway hates you?" before.  Spot on visuals, solid gameplay, and great sound design.

Developer

Yea, Alleyway was the original GameBoy Breakout, but most people don't know that and the genre is universally known as breakout clones so I chose to call it that :D

Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed it.

Oh man I've always loved breakout style games. I was doing pretty well then got slammed with 4 jinxes at once and died pretty much immediately. Lots of fun.

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it. I suppose it takes some practice to manage to survive multiple curses, but sometimes you're just unlucky and they hit you in the wrong moment :)

An interesting take on the classic brick-breaker. The ball seemed to bounce a little awkwardly at a couple points and ended up shooting straight down after I got a Fastball and Inverted controls so it's possible to feel like the game gave a "cheap shot" kill, but overall it's well made.

Developer

Thanks for your feedback. The ball isn't physics based, so it should bounce properly all the time, however, when you hit the corner of a brick, it may result in an angle that seems odd (though it isn't). There also is an "erratic" modifier which does pretty much what you described: bouncing in weird angles. So maybe that was active?
