This game sells itself on the horror and boy does it deliver. I felt unease through the ambiance and sound design, a little too uneasy xD

I had a few attempts at this. The first one, I couldn't summon anything. The second I got stuck in a wall. The third I got lost in the dark and don't know if I got stuck in the dark or just perpetually lost but I had to start again.

I definitely encourage what others have said about lighting though. While it does set the stage, I cannot see the stage. Otherwise it has a lot of promise!  I enjoyed the scribblenauts-esque style of gameplay where writing got you things

i finally got around to playing this properly!!! i liked it a lot and i really do love the whole notepad concept and actually having to THINK about what you need to proceed! i actually love that a lot, i think in future if you keep working on it it could be interesting to have a few different options (silly, or serious!) to change the path of the game slightly. i think lighting definitely needs to be worked on, but i saw in your other comment that things had to be condensed and brightness changed to fit on itch and i totally understand that!! i really did enjoy this concept and i am glad i came back to it to see it through!

I given it it's fair try, I got stuck on a wall and got fed up. The game was too awkward for me. The bug kinda ruined it for me. I did like the art but in places I felt some of the art could have been improved and because it was so dark I couldn't enjoy what you were showing me half the time I was trying to feel around the room because it was too dark. Honestly, try make your game more user friendly next time, if your user struggles to play your game they will likely get too frustrated like I did and not want to continue, I got the gist of it anyway, it was otherwise fun but the bug was just too much for me, I experienced something similar with the web version. What I liked was the atmosphere but I just grew annoyed that I couldn't move after getting stuck.

Developer

I appreciate your feedback, I had to shrink the lighting and textures to allow for space so I could be uploaded to itch which in turn made the game extremely darker than it should originally be - the being stuck on a wall is a new issue which i believe has stemmed from the recent change to a soft lock, which in turn, has caused another soft lock🤦🏻‍♂️, I’ll try and get it sorted out before the Jam ends so anyone whose willing to, can give it another go and try to enjoy the game for how it should be played! - I will be recreating the project from scratch and creating a longer more polished version with an actual story after the Jam finishes! Regardless, I appreciate your feedback and will make sure the full version doesn’t have bug / issue!

Try and make the note pages not disappear, perhaps include the instructions as part of the game menu: you click a button and it takes you to the instructions then you click off the instructions and it takes you back to the main menu, a menu would give you an opportunity to set options, etc. I did bump up the rating a tad but with the state it was in originally it made the game difficult to experience, a game needs "some" light for it to be played, I can't play a video game in the dark I'm afraid it needs enough light so I can see a little more than just the candles on the floor, the problem is the game needs things to be obscure but not so dark you are struggling to move forward. Try increasing the player's vision just enough so they can see where they are standing you can still do scary as long as your player can see!

More specifically - if there's writing on the notepad I need to know what it said previously else I lose the hint.

Suuper spooky and atmospheric and a surprising amount of polish given the time frame you worked in. Would looove to see it developed further, possibly with a little more player guidance for ur average town idiot XD (me) great submission! excited for updates.

Really interesting idea for a horror game! Unfortunately, I quickly softlocked myself by going back to the paper after picking up the flashlight. There didn't seem to be a way to back out, and it just held me staring at the paper without being able to type anything.

Submitted

I rebooted the game and spawned the door, the key and the flashlight, then this time raced out into the darkness... only to get stuck again. I wound up trapped in a 2-inch square of floor next to an unlit torch, unable to move in any direction. I swear I'm not trying to do this on purpose; I really want to see what this game has to offer. I gave it a high rating, I just don't think the game likes me xs

I do plan on working on this game (from fresh) once the game has finished and having around a 30+ minute long game, with a fully fledged storyso hopefully this won’t be the last time you play!

I do think I know the issue of being trapped and stuck now I think about it, I had an issue of people (further in the game) dropping down from the ladder after ascending it and soft locking themselves and as by the rules of the game jam I was able to make a small implement by adding a collider to stop people from being able to do so BUT what I think has happened is that the collider somehow gets triggered before the actual ladder event occurs leading people to become soft locked like yourself, I’ll have to look into it if I get time before the Jam finishes and add a final small update so you’re able to get the full experience; but even if you don’t I really do appreciate you taking your time by giving it multiple chances, and for proving your feedback! It’ll truly help me when it comes to the full development to make sure I test and trial every avenue of the game before publishing it🤍

Aaaah you know what, that makes sense! I can see that happening. I will definitely give the game another go once the jam is over! I really like the aesthetic and premise you've got going on here, it has some good horror potential!

I CANT BELIEVE I DIDN'T RATE THIS YET! I just did it! Amazing game

Submitted

A very cool and well executed concept! and the game looks very polished, I haven't gone through all the list (that's as far as my sleepy brain could go) but overall it was fun to play!

some notes though, cutting down on the black fog would be nice as things look dark enough with the limited lighting, but even then, things are looking good.

Submitted

what a unique and new kind of gameplay, i really liked the atmosphere, my only comment is to brighten the game just a tiny bit, the lighting and the blood stains look as sick as well. a great game :>

Submitted

This was a really neat experience! Spawning items from the list was a unique touch I have not seen yet. I had some graphical issues while playing but what jam game doesn't have some of that goodness? I am not sure if I missed it, but I was having a hard time connecting the theme to the gameplay, but that might just be me. You should be proud of the unique concept you pulled together in this jam. Thank you for sharing your game with the world!

A game with a ominous atmosphere, and nice overall. I found it to be pretty dark, and maybe it was just a issue on my end but the camera kept moving to the right for some reason. Nonetheless a good submission, well done :)

The concept is really cool, game was a tad too dark for my taste. I unfortunately experienced a few glitches (like getting stuck on a wall, making me restart. Overrall really creative! I'd like a full version that's a little brighter and maybe ways to debug or teleport to checkpoints in case you get stuck.

Submitted

I really enjoyed this game the concept is so smart and i was really surprised by what it let me spawn in.

Submitted

The game was kind of dark, but I really enjoyed the visuals! The list of items is such a unique take that I'm surprised people don't try to use it more often! Atmosphere is wonderful, gameplay is smooth, and sound is so eerie. Very well done!

REALLY liked the idea of a notes materialization. But the game was WAY too dark and also very scarry goddamn

Developer

the game is VERY dark, that would be something that I’d have to update when I take this project in full time after the jam! But thank you, I wasn’t actually sure if the woman was going to get people 😅, glad you enjoyed it🤍

Submitted

Really cool concept, the mechanic is a bit vague at first but after I managed to find out the first prompt the rest were pretty simple. The atmosphere really works I love how the game reacts to your actions and plays with your expectations. I would love to see an expanded version of this game.

Developer(+1)

thank you! I appreciate your feedback; I will most definitely be working on a full 30+ minute release after the jam as it seems like a lot of people would like to see a full release! I will also try to add a bit more of a hint mechanism so it’s not too difficult to get into and to figure out the next word! Expect a longer version in the near future!🙌

Submitted

Really intriguing concept! The visuals and presentation feel polished, and you’ve made bold choices in how mechanics connect with the theme. Some bits felt a little confusing at first, but once the systems clicked it became quite engaging. I’d love to see a bit more clarity in feedback (especially when things change) — but overall, this stuck with me. Keep iterating — you’ve got something unique here!

Oh, and it's Took a long time to load on WebGL haha, and it was a bit too dark at the start, but once it got going it looked and played great. nice game :)

If you have a moment, I’d love if you could check out mine too! Play it here: https://kaijota.itch.io/graverun

Thank you for the engaging feedback! I really do appreciate it as this is a project I'd love to take on after the jam and expand to a fully fledged story but a lot more polished, after the feed back from yourself and others I have come to notice that I probably should have made more use of the lights and the hints when people manifest the correct items and I'll be sure to take everything else you've mentioned into account and use it to further progress the game, - Yeah, the webGL has been a bit of a pain even for myself it took more than minute to load, I'll have to look into it and figure out the issue, but I'll defiantly check out your game after work today! thank you for playing and giving your honest feedback and for mentioning the uniqueness of this project, its truly appreciated!

It's good though I have some critques. For one, I think that it's important that you implement a way for the player to exit out of the note, I ended up having to reload several times because I had no idea what word I needed to type or the I inadvertantly broke the game's sequencing I think. Additionally, the game is extremely dark even when you have a lightsource, making it extremely hard to see what you are doing and or get lost. Overall however, I think the idea of a game where you have to write down what item you need in order to get it very interesting, though I think it should be more like what you did with the ladder where the player has to explore in order to find the next word they need to write. If you do fix some of the games bugs I would love to give another crack at it!

Developer

I love this! Thank you for your honest feedback! There is a way to get out of the notepad by pressing ESC, I should have added a little hint to ensure players knew that, I would love to re-create this for a full 30+ minute game after the Jam with a story line to it which I originally had planned, and I understand everything you said! My fiancé mentioned during development it was a tad too dark and to adjust the brightness of the lanterns or something else, Which I did but when it came to building the client I shrinked the lights and textures down massively to make sure it was small enough to fit in the zip folder and to be uploaded onto itch (it probably would have worked without the lights being shrunk to be honest), but when I come back to this in a couple of week I'll use your comment and others as a building ground to ensure the full release is much better than the Game Jams version!
thank you for taking the time to play and rate it as well!

Really cool concept! I wished there was a way to jog/sprint since you had to go back and forth quite a bit. Otherwise a really solid game. I hope Sean plays it once it´s complete ♥

Developer

thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed it! & that is a very good point, it was such a minor oversight that I should have taken into account😅

cant load it on chrome, Opera GX or Mozilla :(

Developer(+1)

Oh no! I’ve just seen the F&Q about updating the game, I’m allowed to add on additional types so I’ll build and attach a windows download real soon and will ping you when it’s done 🙏

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

I've just build a new web build (it may take some time to load) but if not, I've also added a downloadable windows client which should 100% run ❤

awesome! I think the downloaded version will help  a lot! told some frens to play :3

Developer(+1)

thank you! I do really appreciate that🙏

Submitted

i wanted to play this so bad but it wont load for me!! i plan on trying again later and coming back to give a proper review </3

Developer

Which browser are you trying to use? I’d recommend using Opera GX as chrome / Firefox seem to have issues loading it

Submitted

i got it to load!!!! but couldn't get the flashlight to work. from what i got to see though, i love the concept of it all and the environment soo much!! the notepad idea is SO cool!

Developer(+1)

The hotkey for the flashlight is “F”, but it only works for a limited amount of time, when you walk down the corridor then it “shatters” an that’s when the more “primitive” version needs to come int play!

I hope you’ll give it another shot knowing this now!😬

Submitted

i will!! i was pressing F but nothing was happening, ill try it again today!!

Developer(+1)

I've just build a new web build (it may take some time to load) but if not, I've also added a downloadable windows client which should 100% run ❤

You're more than welcome and thank you! Please don't hesitate to let me know the good and bad things you find so when the jam is over I can take your feedback into account and work on the full game with it in mind!
