Good to see a level editor.

Nice use of control inversion for trick or treat.

Billy Corgan would approve! 😆
I played for a bit - It was pretty fun but I couldn't get past the level that had 2 pumpkins floating out of my reach.
I liked the sprite artwork and the cartoon sound effects were funny.

Developer(+1)

You have to jump on the Big pumpkin first, then you use the platform to slide across to those two floating ones.

Submitted(+1)

Oh!  I guess I wasn't thinking because I killed the big one first! haha

Developer(+1)

I guess the game is more like a 'puzzle/platformer'.  You can even create your own levels, feel free to try that.

A bit slippery, but the variation in what attacks the pumpkins are susceptible to was interesting, along with the timed Trick-or-Treat event. Having a level editor built in is also neat.

Hi, tried to play it, but it just does not works. Open on the quarter of the screen and I’m totally not sure how to even leave the first platform as the ghost is blocking the exit.

Developer

The sign to your right tells you to use CTRL to activate platforms.  That key will either make platforms disappear or move.  There are other levels that are easier, and even a level editor.  Please feel free to give it another try.  You can also use PageUp and PageDown for zoom as well as AWXD for moving the zoomed center.  If you click and drag mouse you can pan to see the entire level ( the level size is much larger than the viewable screen ).

So again, simple controls are:

Arrow keys, space and control key

Ok, played it one more time. That’s a fine entry for a jam, the main character is eye catching and you’ve made a lot of content taking into account the jam timeframe.

Still some levels occupy just the part of the screen which honestly makes playing the game kind of hard, and not very pleasant.

Other levels are at lest centered, so it is possible to play but… the character controller is hard to handle because of the inertia. This is a skeleton and he is in the dungeon, it’s strange that he is moving that way (probably I’ve missed some LOR) and thus it’s very, very hard to play.

The other thing are the messages regarding the damage and current health, they are out of place. Consider making the progress bar for the play health instead of those notifications fitting the banking app.

Also, it’s almost impossible to get through the enemies without getting damage on some levels, jump is not high enough and there are no platforms, so the player just have to get the damage, which also does not feel good.

So my main recommendation for you is to analyze in detail how other games like you want to build are done and build your games using those as a reference. And the other recommendation is - it is usually better to make small amount of high quality content than a lot of low quality content.

I’m truly sorry if this review will upset you and hope that honest opinion will give you more to work with and grow on than just nice empty words.

Thank you, very good review and points well taken.  I've been told that I need to play more games and conform to how they operate.  You are right completely.  I also did jam through this one to add a lot of lower quality content and features rather than a lot of polish.  The message system was the easy wrong way of providing feedback in the game so your point there is also very well taken.  In November I'll be submitting to the GitHub game jam and I will take my time and try to come up with a very polished idea.  I've been jamming hard (I submitted to the past 6 jams) and explored both some 3D things (three JS), this platformer (matter JS) and some standard html, css, and javascript.  Feel free to try most of my submissions and you'll hopefully find something adequate or enjoyable among them.

The fact that you can take such a harsh feedback and convert in into a growth trajectory says that you are on the right track!

Wish you to build great games and all the best in general!

The angry pumpkins and skull can be attacked by jumping and landing on them with the arrow down key held - a pile driver attack.  This should allow you to kill them without yourself taking damage.  Again, thanks for your excellent review and very valid points.

Also, you have to work on presenting your games. Game’s icon is the first step of the player into your game and you have to make it interesting, and moreover, you have to make it clear. You current icon is too zoomed out to my taste, consider featuring the main character, something like this will probably be better.

This was like ice skating and not knowing how to use your skates to stop. It was an interesting experience. I really liked the carving mechanic. The level editor was a cool idea.

The controls were complex and difficult to master. There appears to be no point in jumping without Shift being held down. It didn't help that the first tutorial level requires you to figure out the controls, and then the second one actually tells you how to use them. I did not try the level editor because I found the player too difficult to control.

This game has a lot of potential with some tweaking to the core play experience.

A very interesting menu system.

I like the art style, SFX were a little loud.

There was lots of options but would have been nice for more in game tutorial and simple levels to get the feel.

Thanks and agree, but as I was coding, I was frantic to add more and more so the level design took a back seat.  By the way, there is an experimental level editor that allows you to create your own levels by simply placing letters in ascii text.  Different letters place different platforms or pumpkins, portals, and starting/ending positions.

There is also a JSON type that allows you to pasted edited json to make a level.

The (F) key will turn off that Fuzz sound and the (T) key will toggle Trick of Treat mode ( level 2 invokes trick or trick at 10 seconds ).

💀 A 2d platformer ðŸ’€

💀Smash the pumpkins and exit to the void 💀

  • Arrow Keys, Shift, Control, Space
  • S - save checkpoint
  • L - load checkpoint
  • T - toggle trick or treat
  • F - toggle fuzz noise
  • Page Up, Page Down - zoom view
  • A,D,W,X - adjust player center

There are a variety of levels that use falling and disappearing platforms  as well as the need to destroy all the pumpkins before exiting into the void ( Visual Theme ).

Skulls and angry pumpkins must be 'smashed' with a pile-drive attack.

Other pumpkins can be 'carved' with shift key knife attack.

There JSON level allows you to copy and paste JSON configuration into the game which allows you to create the JSON for your own level creations.  Please post any JSON levels you create here.

There is a trick-or-treat mode - After a configured delay, the control keys are swapped!  (left is right, and right is left) - This is to support the trick or treat theme idea where 'a helpful feature turns against you'.

You can touch the signs to save your checkpoint, or use the (S)ave feature, then you use the (L)oad feature to return to your last saved position - This is to support the trick or treat theme idea of a 'checkpoint system to never lose your place'.

Enjoy, and thanks for any comments.
