Wow, that was quite the experience. I only got to one of the endings, but that story was intense. I feel sorry for the girl and I found the themes of consent and choice interesting.

I would have liked to see some more dialogue options in certain places. I know not being able to change parts of your outcome is part of the themes for the path I took. But I think having that reflected in more dialogue options would have made the themes more powerful. It also would have helped with the downtime between choices where it's just story. That being said, the story was really good so this wasn't a major issue.

Good visuals and character designs. A nice twist on visual novels. I felt quite scared of the wolf throughout my playthrough. And good music.

Really good game overall.

thanks!

This is an awesome and dark twist on fairytales, and SO much content and such a good story! I wasn't able to finish all paths because it is so much (that's good haha) and have no time, but certainly a 5 in story. The artstyle is great as well, and the music worked really well with the story and mood.

It's amazing you managed to do all this in a week, congrats!

thank you! :)

Terrifyingly twisted game! So far I've only gotten the Woodsman route ending but damn great writing! Will definitely be circling back to play the remainder of the endings.

Developer

thank you! ^_^

A horror story based on a fairy tale!  that’s such a cool idea!
You accomplished so much in just one week!
The sketch-like art style really reminded me of a storybook. it was cute and charming

Developer

thank you! :)

That's definitely a lot of story done within one week! I like how each ending kind of have a different flavor, one was Eroge (didn't read the CW so didn't expect that lol), one was a tragedy, and one was the good ending. I feel like the good ending is quite long, though, compared to the other one, but maybe that's just because VN isn't really my thing. Anyway, nice twist on the fairytales stories, and also, really love the character's sprites!

Insanely impressive you managed to finish this in a week. Getting the good ending after the bad one was the most satisfying thing I've experienced with this jam's entries so far.

Developer

thank you! :)

I am a big fan of fairy tales being turned into horror. It's actually one of my favorite tropes. This story's dark fairy tale makeover is definitely based on Little Red Riding Hood. There are multiple endings to the story, and even the bad endings are probably worth experiencing. Some of it might be a bit intense for certain readers, so content warning there.

Since this is purely a visual novel, I really don't want to spoil the experience for anyone, but our main character is a girl who gets involved with a wolf she once saw as a prince, but who has now become something much worse. I think the story does a good job addressing the dangers of trusting "strangers", without necessarily sending the message that you should never trust anyone at all. Instead, it emphasizes that monsters exist in the world, and it's not your fault if trusting someone puts you in a bad situation. The story also took a lot of twists and turns I didn't expect, and it might even include other fairy tale reinterpretations in the game. I thought the choices were fun, and the true ending was cute, though it may have felt a little too easy. Still, as a game jam project, I think this is a great visual novel. I could even see it being priced on Stream, though of course a bit low given the playtime.

The art was really cute. I liked the sketchy feel to the art, which complements the storybook feel, and the given fairy tale retelling sections had a great style of their own. The use of real backgrounds is common in indie visual novels, and I always enjoy it. It's slightly composited, fits well, and provides a nice contrast to the art style. The music is great, and reminds of a lot of RPGMaker games. In fact, I feel like this game could easily be recreated in RPGMaker format and it would fit perfectly. Overall, I thought the game was a lot of fun, and I would love to check out more visual novels from you!.

I think someone complained bout this game on the discord saying it needs a content warning haha! In all honesty it probably does but probably don't spoil what happens!  I got the happy couple ending myself!  Was quite good but wow that's a lot of dialogue in a week haha! Anyway congrats on the effort :)

Developer

The page itself does have a content warning and there's a disclaimer in game. We'll definitely review if more CWs are needed in future games. Thanks for your kind words!

Geez I completely missed both xD

Got the happy couple ending

I find it mind-boggling that you made this game in a week. The music goes very well with the theme, and the game is entertaining enough, but the options offered to choose from weren't well-informed. For example, if I'd had known about their earlier discussions on how she'd wanted them to find a place to move into together, I probably wouldn't have picked the Woodcutter's hut as my first choice. Regardless, congratulations on a well-made game.

A very well made visual novel slash fairy tale adaptation! I loved the character sprites
It felt very relatable at certain points...

Dunno if you're planning on continuing the story in any way, but I feel like it has great potential

The story was lovely and after how gruelling the first bad endings were, the good ending felt super cathartic. In my heart I decided it's the true ending XD

Developer(+1)

No need to worry, the final ending Is the true ending!

Thank you for playing, glad you enjoyed your time with it!

I don´t usually like visual novels but I got hooked up in this one. The story is great and the music is really good. It makes you feel uncomfortable (Or at least that is what I felt and that´s a plus). Well done!

thank you! :)

Very well done game, the story meshed the fables plots very nicely, although some things do feel slightly forced (imo it would've made more sense if red riding hood decided to trust and help Gretel after she found out her brother was a hunter), but with time constraints no game can be perfect.

The drawings displaying the main characters as princesses were also well done.

I do agree a little with the lack of dialogue/choices that other commenters mentioned though

Developer

thank you so much for the kind words!

this is a visual novel so it's mostly reading by default, but in the future we'll consider scoping differently for more choices. thanks again :)

This usually isn't my cup of coffee (I don't like tea), but the haunting music, beautiful character art and elegant writing really kept me engaged. Now I may not be able to relate to her experience cuz I'm a grown ass man, but I felt some sort of empathetic dread because this stuff really do be happening in real life. You should totally consider pursuing a career in writing. I feel like you've framed a pretty disturbing theme into something consumable but still impactful. To turn such an iconic fairy tale into a dark and suffocating story is really a thing of beauty. This was crazy btw:

wow!! thank u for the kind words!! :D

(also dw, both devs behind this arent girls lol)

Developer

Gosh!! I almost don't know what to say to all this. As the head writer and artist I'm really moved by your words, especially coming from someone who also made such a great game!! Saying I should pursue a career in writing means so much to me since that's a dream of mine 😭

Horror is my speciality so having this narrative called suffocating just brought a big smile to my face.

Played for all 3 endings - I liked the way you blended two stories together, and the inclusion of darker themes (thank you as well for the content warnings; for anyone else - definitely read these first!) I do think a few more dialogue options would have been nice, even if they ended up down the same route, just as it felt very punishing to choose A one time and have it lead to such a bad end. Really amazing commitment though and impressive work for just one week!

Developer

thank you for the kind words!!

there were more things planned, but we scoped down due to the time. thanks again! :)

Simply Terrifying.

Developer

This means a lot to me!

Hey, I also used Little Red Riding Hood in my game, cheers!

Nice character design. Combining two folk tales was a cool and creative choice. I only play visual novels from game jams, so I’m no expert, but I felt like the player involvement was a bit limited. Maybe adding more choices or a few mini games could help make it more engaging. Maybe :D

Nice work!

Developer(+1)

thank you for the kind words!! we were planning on adding more choices, but we scoped down due to the time constraints lol

thanks again! cheers :3

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thank you for your response! I'm glad you enjoyed the game!

So our main inspiration are josei and otegei which don't really do mini games or things like that.

The game did originally have 8 endings but those were naturally cut for time.
