This game reminds me of Minesweeper. It is incredible that you managed to do all this in only 26 hours. I admit that at first its hard to understand what to do but after you find out the game is really enjoyable
Thank you! It actually IS a minesweeper-like game :D Glad you liked it after getting into controls and rules :)
Although I'm terrible at Minesweeper, I must say: this game has surprisingly managed to innovate the mechanics to a point where the gameplay feels both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time, making it very engaging.
The interface is extremely clean and polished, which really helped in understanding how things worked. The score counter is, without a doubt, a great addition to promote healthy competition (despite the issues you mentioned with the online scoreboard tool).
The art and overall atmosphere fit perfectly with the Halloween theme, and the ghosts really do become VERY unwanted haha.
I confess I found the tutorial quite difficult, but I wouldn’t say it’s poorly explained—rather, the game is just really tough to progress in. However, since the levels are short, it’s easy to keep playing again and again until you finally manage to finish one.
One thing I noticed is that there are many elements designed to make life harder for the player, like the shrinking light and the limited number of ghosts we can "release".
This, in itself, makes the game excessively difficult. One small change that could improve the balancing—though simple—would be adding a brief delay before the player takes damage from the ghosts again. I know the floors activate when the player steps on them, and adding a delay could potentially give the player an unfair advantage. However, the fact that stepping on the wrong tile already traps the player should be enough to balance this, since, in theory, the chances of a player finishing the level by randomly stepping on tiles would be incredibly low (unless, of course, they have all the luck in the world on their side haha).
As always, another great game, just like the ones from previous jams. I remember your games from past jams, and the quality is still high. Great job! Congratulations on the game, and best of luck in the jam!
Edit 1:
I almost forgot to mention this, sorry about that, but the music also fits the overall atmosphere very well. However, one thing I noticed is that the sound effects are a bit too loud compared to the music, which makes them subtly "overpowering" when we activate many tiles at once.
Many many thanks for this detailed feedback! I know now that the game is quite hard already, while the tutorial is already very difficult, still nice that you liked it!
I like your ideas regarding game play. I'll consider updating it eventually :)
The most Halloween-themed game in this game jam! I like the style, but it's hard to understand what to do. I’m really impressed with how you managed to complete the game with scoreboard and difficulties in just 26 hours!
Thank you! I know, the tutorial is quite difficult already. Due to missing time it's still rough on the edges. Should have focused on that instead of the leaderboards probably ^^'
It was a really fun game! It reminded me of Minesweeper in some ways. The sounds, visuals, and UI design were all really well done.I liked how the difficulty increased step by step that was a nice touch.I just wasn’t sure if there was something I could do when the ghosts appeared.
Overall though, it’s a great piece of work!
Haha, thanks! It actually is a minesweeper-like game, yes!Regarding the ghosts: When you correctly flagged haunted tiles and revealed them using 'E' you can 'charge' the magic circle. Once you cleared 6 haunted tiles you can lure ghosts in the magic circle and get rid of up to 6 ghosts :)
Teşekkürler, şimdi anladım. Bu arada mantık gerçekten güzel .
Teşekkürler!
Overall, this was fun to play. It was a nice spin on Minesweeper. Having to walk around the map with your light source being the level's countdown was a great idea. The added elements of the ghost and the magic circle were also a good way to keep the experience from staling.
I got up to Tricky, but it got difficult for me at that point. I may try again another time.
Many thanks! I also hope that the servers for the leader board will be available soon again, then you can check the highscore as well :)
Having a built in tutorial as well as multiple difficulties for a jam game is a really nice addition.
I would suggest in the tutorial popups having the image of the floor tile type next to its name when its referred to because it took time to memorize which tile had which name.
Like others have said, I found even the tutorial a little difficult.
I would suggest having an extremely easy first level just so people can get a hang of the game first.
The game is clearly not a minesweeper rip off as it has many impressive and original mechanics.
The visual style is also very good.
Many thanks for your feedback! Yes, I admit the tutorial is quite to difficult as a start... nice idea with the pictures of the tiles. My first idea actually was to show animations of the different tiles and how to interact with everything etc., but due to the time constraint I was not able to. Should have focused on that maybe instead of including a (currently not functional) leader board and different difficulties maybe^^
Maybe even a video tutorial on youtube so people can just see the game play.
Even though the tutorial was hard, the reason I pointed it out is because the game so far made me want to play the whole game.
Good point, I may add a tutorial video! :)
Really cool take on] minesweeper, love me some classic games remixed. Would've loved to try impossible from the get go just to see how hard it would be with these new rules
Thank you so much! Haha, yeah. Eventually I also think it would have been better to unlock all difficulties after the tutorial. Maybe I will update this after the jam.
clarification i suck at minesweeper but the tutorial helped a lot. I was wildly surprised there was scaling difficulty in the game. Also the fact all the UI was so clean.
Good use of ease of access sound options. Page itself was all clean too and overall for 26hrs seemed like a ton of work for short amount of time put in. I'd wish I knew what was already purchased assets tbh so i could figure out overall scoring on the game. but the sounds is a nice touch and is not overbearing. The looping isnt terrible either. I think sfx need some adjustment as its quite more noticeably louder than themusic by a bit.
Thank you so much! I prepared the pumpkin character like 1 (or 2?) day(s) before the jam started, as I knew was on vacation from 29th to 31st of october and want to do a minesweeper-like game with top-down movement. Any other art was created during the jam, including all UI etc. I created SFX with Bfxr Soundmaker for and used music from Pixaby. So basically all assets (except music) was made by myself, 95% of it during the jam (character sprites). Thanks for letting me know regarding the SFX!
Really cool twist on an old, but great idea. Not failing immediately and having a change to remove ghosts was really good addition, as it allows bad players like myself also complete levels.
Well made game overall!
Thank you so much!
I liked everything about your game, except the fact I'm really bad at it!
Literally, I ALMOST finished the tutorial :D
I'll try it again tomorrow, with a fresh mind, but let's focus on my initial experience :)
So, like I said- I liked the look and feel of the game. The pixel-art-cute-pumpkin-guy and the chiptuney music felt like a PC game from 1994 (I mean it in a good way :)). I loved the fact, you included the tutorial, and difficulty levels. And the cherry on top- online leaderboards (didn't load at the time of me playing, but my internet is wonky today, so that might not be on you). What I'm saying is- that is a really high level of polish in just 4 days, and in jam where a LOT of people had very ambitious ideas that had to be visibly scaled down, or overscoped, that's really something comendable!
As for the theme- I felt like the player was more of the uninvited guest than the ghosts. Imagine- you're chilling under your... uhhh... numbered tile, and out of the blue, this pumpkin guy starts going around and marking your stuff! And not only this- he does that badly, waking up you and your mates! Of course you're gonna chase him around!
Many thanks!
Haha, I like the idea of actually you being the uninvited guest! Fits very well if you summon the ghosts regularly :D
I know that it's a kind of a game you either like to play or not. Regarding the leaderboards: There is actually an issue with the servers I am using...and it started with the submission deadline... lol.
Hope it'll run again within the voring period ao people still get a peak on the scores.
For game play itself: It is just minesweeper....instead of you don't die immediately when clicking a "mine" and you are able to "free" (reveal) flagged, and thus, mine (=ghost) tiles.
Hope you figure it out at get a highscore ;D
Yeah, I know it's minesweeper, with a fun take on it. And the thing is- I love puzzle games, I think, I'm good at them for most of the time, but for some reason minesweeper just defeats me :D Especially with ghosts chasing me :D
As for the leaderboards- I use lootlocker. They have a free licence for jam games, are easy to implement in game, and always worked for me.
Uh thanks forthe tip! I used SilentWolf...was also very easy to implement and is free as well. But...you see xDI'll try lootlocker next time maybe, but is it compatible with all engines?
Works with most of the popular ones. Godot is there, so is unity
very fun, polished and well made game !!!
I love it :D
Thank you!!
I have to mention i don't like minesweeper. The game was very clean looking. but idk if its normal but should the ghosts be able to teleport to me? they kept teleporting to me every time i got stuck in a trap. Other than that the SFX where really loud when you mark then press E on 5+ tiles. Tutorial was kinda hard to understand tho.
Thanks for the feedback and playing although you don't like minesweeper :)
What do you mean with teleporting? Usually once they appear they only should follow. However, if you step on a haunted tile a new ghost will appear.
All the previous ghosts teleport to where the new one spawned
Thanks for letting me know! This actually should not happen.
Funny little Minesweeper in Halloween theme.
Rly love art style ^_^
Thank you so much!
First, I have to say that I don't like Minesweeper, lol, but the game was really polished, which made up for that. The tutorial at the start is very much needed because it was a bit hard to figure it out, but after you've got it, it's pretty fun. The art style and sounds also fit perfectly. The theme was also fully implemented. Good job overall :)
Thank you! Yeah, rules can be quite confusing, but I am glad you still liked it!
A bit hard to understand, but VERY well polished and enjoyable nonetheless!
Thank you!
I love minesweeper! This was a lot of fun to play. A great accomplishment for the short time available.
My only nitpick is minor: The wording in the tutorial made the controls a little confusing. At first I thought right click was to mark safe squares but it was actually for unsafe, like traditional minesweeper.
Also, it's very possible I missed something, but it took me a couple mistakes to realize that marked squares only become safe after you press E.
The intro with the bird was awesome and, aside from the minor issue earlier, the tutorial was really good.
Great work!
Thanks a lot! I am sorry for the confusion in the beginning and glad you found out eventually. I should have explained it in another way maybe. Happy you still liked it!
It's a really fun concept, and it's very well put together! The whole thing is very tight, the visuals, the music, nice to have a tutorial too. Good job!
Thank you so much!
