Game description
A top-down 3d game using Unity3D game engine.

Game information:
Stranded on an unknown island, your only hope is to send a letter to the sea. Your only hope is for the waves to guide through to the next island.

This is our first attempt for a Game Jam as a group. We decided to go with something simple and to take the theme... well, quite literally.

Controls: WASD or Arrow keys for movement.

Used fonts: Neptun CAT Font, Nothing You Could Do

Used sounds: Freesound, Pixabay

Team:
Tsalo, Newfis, GEOSFA, evita_oikon, panagiotisnikos, mkrnikoleta

Theme interpretation
We interpreted the theme “wave” literally: the movement of the ocean, the rhythm of the sea, and the way waves carry stories across distances.

Love the graphics, the audio and the gameplay!

Very nice storytelling!

I think maybe it could have a bit more variety of obstacles as it becomes a bit repetitive at some point.

But overall very fun to play, well done!

This game was really nice. Especially the story and the audio. I think the gameplay could see some improvements to make it feel less repetitive. I also like how the story is told level by level. If you make the gameplay more diverse, you could easily expand on this idea (e.g. by adding more themes like cold oceans or add new hazards like whirlpools).

Great work!

Very fun little game. The audio was amazing, it created a really nice atmosphere. I would suggest placing the bottle slightly on it's side so it can be more clearly seen.

The sharks were scary. I like the atmosphere the music set, very mysterious and suspenseful. Were the letters connected to each other? They were all quite morbid hahah, but understandably so.

Developer

Thanks. Some of the assets we created ourselves (like the skark model, the island, the music etc.). That way, we could control the atmosphere a little better. The letters are supposed to be connected with one another and show the progression of the person that is stranded. They were 5 at the beginning, but as we settled for 3 levels, so we tried to write them accordingly.

The shark caught me off guard. Pretty cool game!

Nice entry, way to embrace the theme!

I thought a little more bobbing or a shader to move the ripples of the water would have taken it to another level as far as feeling like you're floating in the ocean.

The controls were tight and the letters were interesting, good work!

Cool game. Whether intended or not, I found it funny to see the sharks go splat when they went into the terrain.

Neat game. It would be if there was a bit more feedback on getting hit and moving in the water. congrats on finishing.

Developer(+1)

Adding more visual feedback would have been nice, but we prioritized on having the most functional gameplay possible with the time at hand!

Thank you for playing the game and leaving a comment! Have a great day!

The shark coming in randomly from the side, and it's movement path being a bit diagonal and shifting, was genius. A great way to add lanes you have to watch out for, and taking the players attention away from easier obstacles

I've created a Twitter post about it cause I think it's an easy but great way to add difficulty to simple mechanics

We wanted to make a simple game and add variety where we could.

At first the shark was gonna be another "rock" enemy, meaning they would come from the top edge of the screen, just with more velocity and different visual flair.

Afterwards, we came up with the idea of having them come from one side of the screen to the other (left to right). We were spawning them in a random spot, somewhere the camera can't see, and having them target another random spot on the other side of the map. Then we implemented the random side and it just felt right! At the end we experimented with a more systemic approach, using collisions: If a shark collides with a rock or seaweed or another shark what happens? The result can be seen at the last level where sharks come more often and you can use the other elements to protect yourself!

Thanks for playing the game and sharing your thoughts! Have a great day!

Congrats on completing your first game jam! Although the game was simple, I found that the letters were surprisingly engaging, and I had to complete the game to read all the letters. The game worked well, with no bugs that I could see.

Thank you for playing the game and leaving a comment!
We chose to make the game simple because it was our first time working together as a team and using Unity3D.
Love the fact that you read the letters and you found them engaging!

Thanks again for playing the game and taking time to leave kind words!

Have a great jam!
