Game description
Pirate Waves is a clear and fast-paced wave-based survival game. Defeat enemy waves, earn gold, and spend it after waves to upgrade your ship’s speed, turning, hull strength, cannons, drink abilities, and buy utility items.

Control your sails to manage momentum, fire with precision, use drinks for powerful temporary boosts, and survive as long as you can on the open sea.

Theme interpretation
The theme appears through escalating combat waves and the ocean waves surrounding the player, tying progression and visuals directly to “waves.”

Really nice entry!

I love the art style and the two phases, of the game.

The "negative" points have already been pointed out by others: compass seems broken, too much money at the beginning.

I have a small thing to add, I feel that shooting with J and K, but having to use the mouse to click (for the spyglass for example) is a bit strange. It could be worth using just the mouse, or use Q and E to shoot (so you use just one hand to move the ship).

I really loved the graphics style for this game. The gameplay was also very fun and addictive little loop. Ended up making it to wave 10 and defeating the boss, but the little army ships he dropped persisted and wiped me out in wave 11 :’)

One small criticism is that the initial influx of cash makes the rest of the game feel a bit too easy, i didn’t feel like i earned my first round of upgrades, and for the rest of the game i was better geared than all the enemies. A slight tweak to initial economy would improve this games difficulty curve imo.

Great work, continue to grow and challenge yourself!

Simple and addictive.

I was already enjoying myself but once I saw that regal blue ship I was all in, the upgrades had me hooked XD

Loved it, such a good time.

Really fun game and great addition to the pirate genre, could definitely see a full game being made out of this. Very impressive work for such a short amount of time!

this was amazing! art is so polished. great idea. i was a little unsure about all the money you start with, but once i saw that you move up an upgrade tier once you max out it made sense.
nice work!

Love this game!

Very cool art, the different scenes are very nice, and I like the fact there are different upgrades and boost you can get in each scenes. Gameplay is fluid and very fun to play.

I'm not sure I understood how the compass work though as in one of the waves I had one remaining enemy and went where the compass was pointing and just arrived at the edge.

Super cool entry overall, very well done!

Developer

Thanks for this Feedback! The compass is a bit broken where it doesn't point to enemies sometimes . That is why it's preferable to use the spyglass instead ^_^.

Amaaazing game! Very good graphics and sound design! The boat design is super cool and getting the upgraded versions is VERY rewarding. I love how it steadily becomes an unstoppable warship. The cannon mechanics are very enjoyable, like in one moment where I could pass between 2 enemies and fire both sides at the same time and kill them both and that was SO GOOD. Hitting enemies from long distances also is satisfying as hell and the boss is killer! I just wish there was more to do at the town, because it was very charming!... it could really fit some story there, but I understand the time scope of a game jam is very limited. Overall amazing work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I wish we could have put more in the town. We also had a story and open world planned, but we had to reduce the scope of the game to get a gameplay loop working. And i still had some issues with the loop after the boss fight. I appreciate your feedback.

So far the game seems to very well made and in-depth! I'm surprised with how much you managed to put into this jam title! My initial gripe was with the UI where trying to exit to different screens was buggy and got me stuck for a bit. Utilizing your ship to fight off other pirates felt pretty good and I loved the amount of upgrades you can get to enhance it. Your team really nailed that "pirate" theme well!

I would recommend adding some tutorial prompts or some sort of guide to the game to help figure out what to do but aside from that this is quite a solid game!

Good job and a full effort for a complete game experience.  I like the store and ship upgrades on land and then the quest to destroy others on the open water.  Like I said, fully developed.  A little slow playing, action wise.  Also I was unsure how to know which side the cannons would fire from when the time came.  Good theme use (waves) being on the water.  Obviously you put the effort for fonts, color scheme and overall pirate feel.

Thank you!

the closest I got to Pirates! gameplay in a while, and I mean it as a compliment. the whole gameplay loop is super fun, only wish more stuff could be unlockable, but it's a jam game so I completely understand how stuff gets cut out as deadline approaches. would play an enhanced version post-jam, congrats on the game!

Good job! I like the graphic and aduio, espically the fire sound effect, very fun. And also very beautiful pixel art!

One question that is it seems like only I use mouse clik the items so I can use them? It has a bit of operation sparate, as I cannot use Items when I combat with enemies, espically the hammer. I think it would be better use mouse left and right to fire, instead of "J" and "K".

But overall, Nice work!

Good game! I enjoyed the battles!

Just one thing I encountered at the beginning. I entered the Tavern, but I couldn't leave. So I had to restart. But after that, it worked.

Great game! Absolutely nailed the ship combat in terms of feel. I thought the game was too easy on my first playthrough, but it turns out I accidentally triggered an OP glitch with the Spy Glass: if you defeat the last enemy while zoomed out and the game transitions back to the port, you stay zoomed out for the next wave. You can stack this multiple times and kind of just see everything all the time. This resulted in me being able to snipe boats from afar without ever really putting myself at risk or taking damage, which snowballed my progression because I never had to worry about my ship's health. The progression felt much better on repeat playthroughs once I figured out it was a glitch and how to avoid it :P

Very nice game! I feel like you really nailed the ship to ship combat - the steering felt right the cannon felt powerful. Also the progression was fun. I'm not sure the potions were really needed though - seem like it's better to just upgrade the ship. I also felt like it was too zoomed in - I constantly needed to click on the spyglass

The pixel art was really good - but it was a little funny that the island is so beautiful, and the sea were you do the actual combat is just plan texture with some ships on it, which is what you look at for most of the game

I had a weird bug were after defeting the summoning boss - I went to the shipyard and maxed out the upgrades, but it's seem like ships were shooting me while it happens (heards cannons and saw my hp drop), and than I got the game over screen lol. Pirates never play fair I guess :)

Enjoyed this a lot. One thing that might be improved is the clarity on the upgrades. At the end of the first wave I already had $1300 gold, and bought a ton of hammers to repair my ship (which was at 30% HP). But then at the shipyard I couldn't really do repairs as that also required gold that I no longer have because I spent it all on drinks and hammers and a couple of accessories :)))

Developer

Thanks for playing our game! The hammer is actually to repair our ship while in the sea, since we couldn't bring the shipwright with us, and the cost are the same in the shipyard anyway, except shipyard repairs our ship fully🤗.

Had to pop in and check out this other pirate game after watching some of your progress in the Discord channel. We even picked some of the same free music! Haha. Anyhow, the part of your game I liked the best was also the part I didn't include in mine at all, the progression system. Having to choose between permanent upgrades and crucial voyage supplies (like repair hammers) made for a very engaging time in port. You did especially great work with the pixel art there too, each location in the port has its own charm and character. It was fun for me to compare how we handled things! Come have a look at my entry as well if you wish.

Developer

The pixel art is actually https://dqnuts.itch.io/  I didn't do anything besides minor stuff when plugging it in.
I love that we had the same music. I played your game it was great and I loved seeing the similarities. Thanks for commenting

Honestly, I'm surprised I haven't seen more water-based uses of the theme. It seems most people did sound and light. Additionally, I like the waves-of-enemies use of the theme, too. Firing the cannons feels nice, although it seems I can cheese the enemies by just staying slightly out of range while I fire. The still shots could use some animation or sound or something, but visually, they're quite pretty.

Solid submission.

great game!

great game! feels like im back in my pirate days, the unkillable ghost ships shoot me before starting just like in my youth!

cant vote tho

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

So sorry. I didn't catch that bug before the deadline.
I accidentally gave the boss minions, the boss's health.
They have 500 health each 💀

My bad I'll definitely update the game after the voting period.

Pretty nive inplementation of naval comba. Upgades added much needed progressio.

If anything seems of then it's the spawning of enemy ships right in your face - basically spawn camping where I'm almost for sure going to get hit.

Also in the begining of the level my ship should be facing north instead of south because from that position controls are inverted. that is confusing for most of the players

>Also in the begining of the level my ship should be facing north instead of south because from that position controls are inverted. that is confusing for most of the players

This is good to know and keep in mind. I originally had the ship facing north, but due to ships taking a long time to turn, when not moving, the player had to spend 5 boring seconds each wave turning around to leave the town and start the zone.

>If anything seems of then it's the spawning of enemy ships right in your face

🤣 for sure. If you zoom out with the spyglass, you can see all the enemies spawn along a ring around the circle.

Enemy AI scripting is my weakest spot. I wish I could've learned more during this jam, but I had to focus on other areas to make a playable game.
