  • Game was engaging and appropriately challenging. My only real complaint is that J for attack on a mouse and keyboard feels unusual compared to a left click, or even an F, but that might just be a personal preference. Otherwise a well polished game, although music and sound effects would have completed the experience. Overall, this was a really good submission.
  • This game has an amazing art style and UI. Every visual detail looks as if it was made for this game. The gameplay feels great as well. The platforming is amazing, and most of the jumps felt like Pat yourselves on the back for that. There's a small glitch to where if you hit/die to a wasp when it has the "!" symbol showing, that symbol will stay in the room until you leave. That's minor and goes away when you swap rooms. Sadly, I cannot beat the game. Your description says that there are safe rooms in the game. I think I know where they are (darker walls with clocks and machines), but none of them work for me. I've gotten the dash mechanic at least five times and the double jump once, but whenever I die I lose the ability and get sent back to the start of the room. I don't think gaining an ability resets the clock, as I will die with my clock halfway if I got the power halfway. Because I need the double jump to get to the Reservoir, I have been unable to play that level. The Furnace feels unreasonably hard because I cannot tell the walls apart from the background.

Game Description
Race against the clock to reach safe zones and explore the ruins of a grand device now unwound.

This is an extremely well designed 2d game. I really enjoyed the graphics style of the game but wish there was some cool music to boost the atmosphere. All the animations are very smooth like the idle and attacking animations. I like how there is more than one enemy and how they have different attack patterns. The flying roach sometimes tries to hit you through obstacles and if you are close enough to lets say a wall while the roach is attacking, you can get hit which is a small downside. Overall, a very well done game.

This is an  excellent action-adventure game.

Pros:

- Hands down best art/animation work in the who game jam.

- Level design was really advanced and intriguing, displaying creativity.

- Ambition is evident.

- Enemy variety is very cool.

Cons:

- No music or sound effects.

- The combat was not very responsive. The attack animation is slow, and it seems random when  enemies take damage and even die.

- The metroidvania elements are good, but could lead to player confusion. Some of the trophies are just pixels away from being obtained without the required ability, so I found myself retrying impossible jumps just to make sure I wasn't supposed to get them yet. By making it more evident when there is an ability required for a section, the gameplay flow could be much improved.

The art was great! Everything looked good and the animations flowed smoothly. The only issue with animations was the player's attack didn't line up the animation it played, but otherwise was excellent. The gameplay itself was also very fun, but only after you get your first powerup (in the furnace). Until you find your first powerup, you kind of wander around aimlessly. If I hadn't played a metroidvania before, I wouldn't have known to look for new abilities in the first place. A linear section at the start leading players to their first powerup would help newer players know what to look for. The enemies were fun and a good obstacle, but combat was pretty finicky with the hitbox issues, so I avoided combat when possible. A small thing too was in the bottom right of the furnace and a few other places you can see outside the map, but that's a total nitpick. I really liked the wall jump section where you have to climb out of the pit, that was creative! I ended up getting all 20/20 of the trophies (although I thought they were coins at the time), and the game overall was extremely fun!

Also I didn't realize until just now (by reading another person's comment), that the pressure system was designed to kill you. I never interacted with the mechanic. I guess I prefer it to the timer being too fast, but the timer was so long I didn't even notice it.

this game was super well done, great visuals, great level design. some  minor bugs here or there but overall a great concept with a great execution. I will say the combat was a little janky though and overall I just tried to avoid it lol

I really enjoyed this game! The visuals were awesome and the general concept was pretty clear, although I had some trouble finding some levels but that might have been a skill issue. I liked the enemy designs but felt like cobmat was a little difficult in my opinion. Loved the player movement mechanics overall.

This is probably the most complete game out of all the submissions for this game jam, and it was really fun! The platforming worked pretty well most of the time, and it was satisfying to gradually upgrade your abilities over time. The only real glaring omission from this game was the lack of any sound effects or music. However, there were a number of smaller issues that took away from the gameplay experience. The player had a relatively low amount of i-frames after taking damage. The attack animation felt like it was somewhat mistimed, and it often didn't line up with the hitboxes. The spike hitboxes were also too big to where they could damage the player while they were standing atop a wall with spikes on the side. Finally, there was a minor issue where sometimes the player would become temporarily stuck on the corners of platforms. There were also some instances in the game where you were forced to blind drop into a hazard you had no way of knowing was there, which was annoying.

I really love the overall aesthetic of the game. The UI, background, and actual level elements are wonderfully designed. The movement and progression reminded me of Hollow Knight, which I mean as a massive compliment. I ended up only finding 17 trophies, and I'm honestly not sure where I missed the last three.

My main complaint is the hitbox of the spikes on the floating walls at the beginning of Clockwork Ascent. The hitbox is large enough that it hits the player when standing on top of the wall, which makes that section much harder than it appears. I ended up just tanking two damage running through the large spikes to the left to make it past that initial area consistently.

Also, I think it would have been nice to have a shorter steam timer with rooms to recharge. (It looked like there were some rooms for that purpose, but my timer continued to tick down in them.) As is, the timer didn't really exert much pressure to me, especially compared to health. Sound effects and music would have also been quite nice, and had a lot of potential with all the clockwork in the enviornment.

Overall, very nice game! I enjoyed exploring quite a bit.

The spike hitbox including the top of the pipes is intentional behavior. The intention is to make it through that section using wall climb and dash to stay on the sides of the pipes. Admittedly, we should perhaps have just put spikes on top of them too.

The visuals in this game were absolutely stunning, I'm so impressed with all the detail that was put into every aspect, and the amount of animated sprites and different zones crazy. I love how stylish the menu and level transitions are, and the health UI is very unique. The puzzles/platforming are challenging, I really really like how the wasps give a little explanation point symbol before they charge at you so you have some time to avoid them. The levels are pretty expansive. I was a little concerned about a lot of the jumps but then I found the double jump ability which was very helpful.

Some of the levels were maybe a little too big, and in certain areas I think the platforms should stand out from the background a bit more. The combat is decent but could use maybe a little refinement. But overall it was a very well done game with all the care put into the levels and the visuals for everything being standout features! It would definitely be amazing to see an expansion on the concepts in this game!

It was a bit confusing what you needed to do  in the game, I was also unable to figure out how to attack enemies. I really liked the art style that was used and felt that it was all coherent. I would recommend adding music to help with the ambience of the game.

So great. I was incredibly impressed by the art style and animations; super cohesive and lent itself to a phenomenal atmosphere. The controls felt great to use, the platforming was fair and fun, and the game overall was a blast to play. Great work, pat yourselves on the back.

This game was awesome! The art style was great, the dynamics and animations were well put together, and the objective was clear. I enjoyed how the art style complemented the objective and challenge. I wish there was music or sound effects to enhance the amazing visuals. I did find the coin collecting and challenges particularly difficult (although maybe I'm not very good at platformers), and it led to some tedious gameplay. The large map really enhanced the gameplay feel, and the differentiation of sections was well done. The controls screen was also very helpful.

This game was a blast. I enjoy the platforming and the enemies as well as the actual challenges feel really balanced. It was a little hard to tell what to do especially since the controls page was broken, but it was easy to piece together what to do and once the ball got rolling it was a lot of fun!

Developer

Can you tell me how exactly the control page is broken? It works fine on my end

The art style is really cool and the different areas were interesting, I feel that the game could be improved by giving the player a bit more direction in-game.

I really enjoy a Metroidvania type game, this was really fun and I loved the art style. The goal of the game could've been clearer, but I don't think that is a deal-breaker at all. The art style in the game was visually distinct and appealing. The jump mechanic felt broken, as I could sort of cancel jumps mid-air, but maybe that's intentional idk.

I really love the art style! Pixel art is so cool! I think there is a lot of potential for this game if you ever decide to continue on it!!! I really like the mechanics as well! Bugs were fun to avoid and using the slash mechanic was pretty neat. I feel like a clearer goal of what to do might be a little nicer. I couldn't tell where to go or what the trophies looked like. Nonetheless, it was a fun game and good job to you and the team!

This is a crazy cool game! The art is ridiculously high quality, especially for a game jam game, and the Metroidvania style makes it super cool to explore. Understandably, it isn't all perfected yet, like teleported into one area, then back to the starter area placing you at world spawn and not where you left from. The attack and enemies also felt slightly inconsistent, and maybe could've benefitted from some slightly more forgiveness and responsiveness. The pressure mechanic is really cool, but some explanation of it could help. The dash felt really nice when I got it, and the player animations are sick. Great job! This is such a cool experience to come out of a game jam.

What I liked:

-Art style and animations were high quality, especially with the pixelated style and the different color palettes of the rooms being tied together with cogs and clocks

-Power ups functioned and using them to reach previous out of bounds areas felt satisfying

-Collectibles provided optional challenge and provoked thought on how to reach them if they seemed impossible

-The flying bugs go ! before flying at you which is really nice

-UI is pretty

-Overall theming is excellent

-Controls screen is cool looking too

What I didn't like:

-There is no audio, which is a shame because i feel like you had an easy layup with anything clock related. Tubular bell bgm would immediately and drastically improve this game. Even a ticking sfx for the pressure mechanic would help loads, because...

-I didn't even know the pressure mechanic was a thing until I died to it 15 minutes after starting to play. I think I looked at the UI once and thought it was just a clock and didn't have meaning. I still don't know which color kills you, is it all the way around or just partially?

-This game lacks gameplay direction, as in other than trying to get power ups I have no idea what the objective is.

-The furnace section in particular is visually cluttered and lacks visual clarity between the background and the platforms, which is important in a game with as much platforming as this one

-The player's attack is very disconnected from its animation, to the point where I found myself just avoiding enemies instead of fighting them. There is no hitbox above the player, even though the arc makes it look like there is. Also, the front hitbox comes out instantly rather than what the slow start up of the attack suggests.

Bugs found:

-Flying bugs will aggress through walls

-It is very easy to get stuck on a corner of a platform

-Entering Clock Central will always place you at the same location instead of depending on where you enter from (I don't know if this is actually a bug or not)

This game has so much potential to be more than a simple university project, but there are some small pieces of the game that could be implemented better (or implemented at all).

a fun game, I kept getting stuck on ledges if I didn't do some of the jumps perfectly though.

This looks great. I like how for the flying enemies they had a little exclamation mark to indicate to the player that they were seen and that they were about to attack. All the areas looked great, the art in the background really pulled the look together.

I wish there was some audio cues, so whenever you dealt damage or got hit, it is obvious. Also I think each area having their own background music would be cool too. One thing to note is that it's not really obvious in the game what your objective is. I was wandering around for a bit before reading the itch description and figuring out I need to explore all the areas to get special abilities to help you escape lol. Overall great game!

This game was really cool. I really like all the different areas in the game, and the different abilities they can unlock. I really like the graphics as well, along with the movement, and the map. They all work really well together to make the game visually appealing. The only way the game could have been more immersive was if there had been some music.  One more thing I personally liked about the game was the controls. I liked how they were all on the keyboard, it just made it easy to move and perform whatever action I wanted to. I did notice that the X-key for the attack did not work. Overall, this game was awesome. I wish there was music, but other than that, it was immersive and fun!
