Historical Accuracy
I depict the partisan resistance in Italy during the Italian Social Republic, a notable phase of Italy's role during World War 2.
Germany forcefully occupied Italy in 1943 and reinstated Mussolini after his arrest by the monarchy, using garrisons to enforce fascist rule across the country's provinces. I depict there being a small Nazi detachment enabling the local Blackshirt militia to act as defacto police in the town.
There were Italian Partisans who had previously fought against the nationalists in the Spanish civil war, which I tried to represent in one of the members you can potentially recruit.
Before the German occupation, there were segregation policies and systematic violence inflicted on jewish communities in Italy. However the Germans, upon occupying Italy, began deporting jewish italians to concentration camps at a much more aggressive rate. I make sure to include some allusions to the active genocide being carried out.
The fascist authorities would hang people in the middle of towns and villages who were deemed "dissidents." When Mussolini was executed, his body, along with his wife's body, were strung up in a hanging area where partisans were previously hanged. I depict this with a capture mechanic, where captured partisans are executed by hanging the next morning if they are not rescued.
As morally gray as it was, some partisans did carry out violent reprisals against civilians who were believed to have collaborated with the fascists. I included a depiction of this in a mission.
I also used historical images of partisan soldiers. The name of the game is based on the italian antifascist song "Bella Ciao," which has become a worldwide symbol of resistance and antifascism.
Thematic Relevance
Since the theme was World War 2, I decided to center the game around the domestic fight against fascism in Italy. Italy was ruled by a puppet government at the time, installed by the Nazis shortly after Italy attempted to surrender to the allied forces. The partisan resistance played a notable role in the Italy liberation chapter of World War 2, staging an uprising that made the fascist grip over the civilian population untenable in multiple cities. In fact, it was a group of partisans that captured and executed the fleeing fascist dictator, Benito Mussolini.
Disclaimers
I used some sound effects from pixabay under the pixabay content license. I also used historical photos of Partisan resistance fighters found on wikimedia commons.

That was great. I really enjoyed it. Sadly, I think I found a bug. When raiding the storage, I kept pressing to assault them and even though I got a high enough roll, nothing happened. Eventually, I just pressed the stealth one (12) and lost the game XD. So sadly I couldn't pass the game.
The graphics were really good, although a bit harsh on the eyes to have that noise effect all the time. Maybe a bit of less during normal gameplay would have been better. Although I do have some sensory issues, so it could just be that.
Overall, great experience. I wouldn't be surprised if you come out first.
That's so sad I'm sorry that bug happened! I checked my game project and yeah it looks like the proceeding dialogue got disconnected, so that was totally a coding flaw.
I'vce seen the issue with the post-processing come up in a few other comments and it's definitely something that needs revision. I don't want this to be less accessible to people with sensory issues.
Thanks for playing!
What a fantastic game, from the writing to the rpg mechanics, I thorough enjoyed my more than1 hour of playthrough!
If I may nitpick, I'd love to know what stat rewards I will obtain for choosing certain dialogue options, sometimes it's hard to tell from just reading the dialogue box. Speaking of reading, the text colour, font, and contrast were really aesthetic at first, but it became very straining to the eyes after a few minutes. There were also a few bugs where the game didn't register a successful roll, forcing me to re-roll again. It was a little frustrating since one small misstep will snowball into a huge disadvantage and you'll have to start all over again. But that goes to show just how strong the writing is, and how it manages to get you emotionally invested in the character and story.
Wonderful game, bravo!
Thanks for playing... I'm psyched you were able to get over an hour out of it!
I've seen this point on the text font/colour being kinda hard on the eyes so that's definitely something that needs to be revisited/reworked.
I'm also sorry to hear you encountered bugs with the rerolling... That's an understandably frustrating issue to run into. I may have to rework the code for that to be more browser-safe.
Absolutely amazing game with RNG that kept me at the edge of my seat. Full of great ups and down to form amazing story telling.
This is very engaging. I really like the presentation except not too keen on the green wavy font graphics.
The story telling really draw you in. I visited the cemetery, butcher and the church before trying to rescue the captured partisan. I sent both my available partisans in and they were both shot.
Will give this another go after the jam.
Great effort!
Thanks for playing! Duly noted on the issues with the green font and post-processing issues. I'm sure I there's a more accessible way to present the style.
It was the waviness that was off-putting - although the green / black aesthetic is more like 1980s terminals than 1944.
The interface is really great though - very clear on what the choices are and what to click to proceed.
I loved this game, I ended up playing for at least half an hour. The use of a real world images can often feel out of place in a lot jam games, but you used them perfectly here. All I would add is that a bit of background audio would have helped. I would play a full version of this. Congrats.
Some background audio and ambience changes would have gone a long way to characterize the locales and actions a bit more. Great to hear the concept landed for you. Thanks for playing, I appreciate your feedback!
Congrats for the effort that must have gone into it. I managed to recruit a couple of partigiani then I was too bold and got wiped out by the camicie nere.
As an Italian, the theme resonated with me and the game is quite styilsh. I would say that there are a few typos and errors especially in the italian text which I couldn't help but notice.
Un giocone.
Thanks for playing! Really happy to hear the theme resonated with you.
I appreciate you pointing out the issue with typos... It was a bit over-ambitious of me to try and fit Italian words with English given my limited understanding of the language. The plural/singular and masculine/feminine words came out especially rough in both languages.
