Really slick. The visual and especially audio style are super sharp and feel awesome. Really good sound design. Understanding the dash was key to getting the game, but I still feel like I was mostly button mashing outside of that. It ran a little poorly on my computer unfortunately. Great work and FUCK ICE

Developer

hell yeah dude!!!!!!! loved your work too, glad we were both at the jam together!

Submitted(+1)

Short and slick, just how I like my jam entries!

Developer(+1)

well maybe you'll like it when it's not so short and not a jam entry 🧐 perhaps

Submitted(+1)

perchance 🧐

Submitted(+2)

The presentation (the stimulation)    and sound design!    Brilliant allegory

Controls were very slick, tho I was mostly button mashing

Developer

thanks so much! tried my best 🫡 and yea lmao, i wanna revisit the tutorialization

Submitted(+1)

Absolutely stunning and with slick as hell controls.
I made a game for the jam that has a similar look and I hope I can make it as smooth as your teams one day! Oh and definitely look into the AudioEffectSpectrumAnalyzerif you want to have your grid lines bounce to the beat of your music! It is what I used on Godot for my submission.

Developer(+1)

yo! i tried to get you for an interview! i talk to devs on stream about their process, and i left a comment in Null Signal because i thought we shared visual elements lmao

Submitted

lmao I missed it by never looking at the main pages comment section. Wish I would have replied 4 days ago. My bad for that!

I am sadly just not comfortable with talking online yet really. I still use a robot voice (Text to speech) on my youtube videos to get around talking lol. I would happily explain anything though!

also anyway I could at least have a link to the channel to watch the stream later? I'd love to see what some of these creators say. I saw so many amazing game and saved a ton to see what they do in the future with their release.

Awesome cinematics and incredibly impactful visuals. INSURMOUNTABLE VIOLENCE has never looked so slick !!

Developer (1 edit)

lmao, when people were asking me what kind of game i wanted this to be, i literally said something like "i want this game to be about doing an incredble amount of violence"

Submitted(+1)

no clue what I'm doing and there's a bagillion things happening at once but heck yea bruda this slick as hell. I like the artstyle a lot

Developer

HELL yea, glad you gave it a shot! it is supposed to be kind of overwhelming. you gotta be just as overwhelming >:3! it's ok though we're making a better version rn

Submitted(+2)

What a slick atmospheric game. I had NO idea what i was doing though!!! Great game.

Developer

hell yeah, thanks for playing pokeninjaguy! great to be your jam colleague again this year.

the objective is mostly simple though. kill them before they kill you.

controls are on the menu but not for keyboard bc i'm a dummy 💀💀

Submitted(+1)

Submitted(+1)

ah gotcha cool. I love the presentation and the movement is very slick!

Developer

ty dude! that means a lot coming from a team as slick as yours 😎

Submitted(+1)

Ah, so that's what the "Presentation" category is for. Took me a while to get it but I'm very glad I got there.

Developer(+1)

let's gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!

Submitted(+1)

You are a master of theme, setting, atmosphere.

Unfortunately, the game had some performance issues on my little potato laptop, but it was fun skating around as Byrnkill. And I love the enemies. Very cool game!

Developer(+1)

thank you so much, honorable battlenaut 🌹 i know u are busy but i may play ur game so that i may bask in ur yearly offering

The art style is really cool, and I love the voice acting in the cutscenes! The sound design in general for the cutscenes made them feel really intense and immersive. I am really confused on what is going on in the gameplay though, I just kind of spam buttons and not really sure when I take/deal damage or how I die.

Developer

thank you! yeah i'm glad people like our reads, i was pitched down a bit for the intro but bvssic backed it with cinematic music and did the read for the end.

every input that you use can be held down, but for the dash you'll want to hold it to full charge for the most dramatic effect. at heat 3 you get a high kick that clears out the pillars and at heat 4 you get a snap that does an AOE that obliterates all the enemies around you. the jump is an attack that cuts through a lot of enemies and keeps you safe from the pigs on the ground. the pigs can basically only be taken out with either dash or low kick and stab you on contact. your heat level is also your health, and an ice spear being stuck in you means you took damage.

It is really impressive to see what you were able to get done in such a short period. Unfortunately, I got to this a little late, so I don't have too much to say beyond what's already been said. Absolutely astounding presentation, but it's a bit hard to get a handle on what's going on, and the cutscenes (while great to watch) further lengthen the time between attempts. I hope I don't come across too negative here; I understand that these issues are likely the result of crunch and can be easily resolved. Overall, great work!

Developer(+1)

ahhhh! sorry, you can skip those with Escape or Start! i wanted to have a prompt but all the UI stuff was done at the last second. and yeah the amount that got done was a consequence of an intense crunch cycle lmao. my body wouldn't let me sleep a full eight, it just kept getting right back up and onto the grind. thanks so much for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Wow cool! That style and music is really unique want to hear some lore about this world.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

lmao, the lore is the united states of america 🫡🚩🦅💣💥🧊🛢️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️

This game is super rad! I absolutely love the style. It kinda reminds me of Devil Daggers a little bit, which I love.

Dashing around the stage feels super great. The sound design is really insanely good. Super well done on that.

It took me a little bit to understand the game but reading the comments here helped with that. I'm not sure I understand the point of high kicks. Is that just to clear the pillars littered around the stage? I feel like I was able to make do with dash and low kick and sometimes snap. Eventually I was able to get up to heat 16. It sounds like the boss is bugged so I assume that's about as far as I can get.

Really awesome stuff though. I'd love to see more of this. Well done!

Developer

haha, it's funny, bc one of my jam partners said about the same, but i've never played things like devil daggers or hyper demon but that's what it gets compared to! my audio team was goated, BVSSIC has a lot of audio engineering expertise and HC1 provided some good starting samples that he processed. so for instance, we took advantage of sidechaining in the godot audio bus to make the audio duck underneath high-impact sounds like the snap attack or the dash.

the high kick was my way of clearing a path through the pillars yea! but we're gonna be revisiting the moveset. thank you for giving it a shot!

Very visually stylish game with some pretty wild scoring.

It was a little hard to tell what to do or what was going on my first go around, and unfortunately when I died, the screen faded to black and then the game closed which seemed pretty rude. On subsequent playthroughs, that didn't happen.

There was an airborne enemy that kinda kicked my ass quite a bit on my first few attempts, but strangely once I got the hang of it, they didn't spawn anymore on the following run. I'd like to see maybe some more visual clarity on the hit radius of some of the attacks, especially the kicks and the snap it was kinda hard to tell what I was and wasn't hitting in the heat of the combat.

Overall some slick movement in both the sliding aspect and the dashing and jumping and training enemies around!

Developer(+1)

yeah! thank you so much, there were a lot of design considerations and conveyance that slipped through the cracks because of how hard we were crunching 😩

Submitted(+1)

Absolutely understandable. Still a super slick product as it is, you guys did awesome!

Submitted(+1)

I was so excited for this one watching it develop in the Discord!! The presentation is spectacular, moving is smooth, and the idea is so unique and feels special. Thank you for making and presenting it!

Developer(+1)

ohhhh! at least one discord admirer! i'm glad you were interested! i hope you'll visit the steam page once we get it off the ground, we're going to hit it hard and try to get something even better out.

Submitted(+1)

Now thats what I call presentation! The game looks and feels incredible although I do think the objective and abilities of the character could be communicated a bit clearer.  The Sounddesign and Cutscenes are really amazing!

Developer

hell yeah, there was loads of care put into the direction of it 🙏thank you!

Developer

Thank you!

Intense and well done cinematic intro video, death video, and finishing video with great voice acting.

I noticed you can skip over the intro video but it would be nice to be able to skip over all videos (incase you end up watching them multiple times).

The audio is definitely engaging and well synchronized.

it is a bit hard to understand the objective of the game from the initial get go.

I would love for Keyboard+Mouse input information not just controller input information, once you go to controller though it's much easier.

Having some tooltips for each of the abilities to understand what they do would be great too!

A quick tutorial where you just go on a murdering spree without too much punishment would be awesome to get people into the thick of it and ready to play the proper mode.

There is a HP -9999999999 value for the heat when dying.

Mostly small issues I noticed otherwise the meat and bones of the game are solid and banger cinematics/voice acting, super surprised the team pulled this off within 9 days.

Developer(+1)

LOL yeah i was burning at a few different ends for this, appropriate for the subject matter. sans audiovisual assets though this was mostly a solo dev thing, BVSSIC was really supportive and helped hold my hand through hooking up the audio and keeping me focused there, but it really was mostly just me getting up whenever i got up, working far too late, and sleeping far too little. by the end i lost five pounds, my body went into starvation mode after a three-day stint with 1200 cals and ten hours of sleep between them, and i had hundreds of files hooked up. the animations were also all done by me, though i used what i had with the models bc all the models that are animated use the same base model. even the hawks, they're just the dogs but with huge stretched hands and more birdlike motion.

if i had another coder on the team i'd have been freed up quite a bit to address all those other concerns. was really suffering trying to fit menus in near the end so yeah i didn't have contextual control schemes. the heat being -9 trillion or whatever was just me making absolute sure the game goes to death state, as well as communicating to the player that they've reached death state bc i didn't make it very obvious when you're dead. so it's just a funny holdover that i kept in 💀the cutscenes are skippable though, including the death screen! in this version of the game it's actually preferable to skip the intro because there's a bug that makes the start menu inaccessible if you play out the whole cutscene, which is annoying asf.

also, i voice acted the intro and the ending of the game, if you saw it floating around the comments! BVSSIC did the death monologue, and processed both of our reads to fit them into the tone of the game. i'm glad people like my voice acting, BVSSIC's been around the block doing audio for short films and stuff but it's actually something i've taken an unexpected amount of pride in for this game.

thanks so much for the feedback! i'm glad you enjoyed yourself.

Incredible theming and execution of an epic concept! I had a lot of fun playing this! I can’t wait to see what else you come up with!
