Very polished entry. I LOVED the gigantic treasure chests! That was really funny to see. The combat felt grindy to me - having a bunch of character one-by-one go through basic shoot attacks didn't hold my interest for long. Second playthrough was better - I went shopping first :).

The level design was fantastic. I liked the platforms, the open world feel to it, the moving boulders, all this stuff was great. Having a hedge maze level with a ceiling felt oddly dystopic in a way I enjoyed. Where was I, a giant greenhouse? That was fun.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Glad you like the level design!

Amazing soundtrack. The game has a variety of ways of helping the player in the dungeon, such as shops for buying items, ammo, etc. The material of the models was really lovely and well-done. The combat is super tough as my allies would run out of AM, preventing me from attacking any more enemies. I tried to flee from battle once as I noticed I didn't have enough firepower left but I couldn't leave and had to deal with my party members getting hit.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! You can reload ammo by using the item Ammo Rounds.

Cool game! I enjoyed the exploration with some great verticality a lot, there's a strong Etrian Odyssey vibe that I really like. I enjoyed being able to prepare by choosing from a plethora of different items, it really nails the dungeon JRPG vibe.  The rewards for combat were a bit light, so it was a bit too grindy to gain enough gold to buy the better stuff, especially because a large part of your loot must be spent for ammunition and healing items.

I think there should be a default weaker attack you can launch when you run out of ammo, since not being able to attack at all is very punitive.

Great work!

Developer

Thanks for playing, glad you like it! The reward is too low, yes, I plan to buff it for the post jam release. I think if you can buy enough ammo comfortably, you won't need a default attack.

Submitted(+1)

I ran out of ammunition? Is this really a thing here? I don´t think it is a good idea to let it happen, that a whole party can not attack anymore. Graphics are fine, but the RPG Maker stuff is getting a bit long in the tooth, especially as the game seems only to run with 30 fps. Such thing make the movement feel not very good. The music was well choosen and the sound effects have enough “umph” for the battle. System wise there seems to be quite a lot here. So many items to buy, different shops etc. Nice one!

Developer

Thanks for playing! You can refill the ammo with the Ammo Rounds item, maybe I haven't explain it that well. The frame rate is deliberately capped to accommodate weaker devices, I should let players to set the framerate themselves, huh. Thanks for pointing that out!

Definitely feels like Etrian Odyssey, right down to the TPKs! I really like the information you present about objects in the world as you approach them and the strafe selection at the start of the game is also great. Everything feels really polished menu wise as well. It would be nice to be able to use the selected ability in combat without clicking on it again though. I also didn't really know what to buy the first time through but apparently ammo is always good to have and apparently so are the kits to revive. All in all, great game but definitely difficult depending on what enemies you run in to and how often you miss.

Just an edit to say that I figured out you can just use the spacebar to select everything and that makes the combat selection easier and faster. My brain defaults to mouse still.

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yes, Etrian Odyssey is a major inspiration. Yeah you mainly buy rations, ammo, and smelling salts, should have explained it better. On speeding up battles, you can also hold left click to do that!

Submitted(+1)

Woowa, you really nailed that JRPG vibe like others have said.

The visuals gave a Dragon Quest vibe, and the musically feedback for battle won made it very addictive to keep going (I definitely need to try and incorporate something like this in my games). Overall the experience in the menus etc was the most polished I felt of the jam so far!

I love puzzle games so appreciated that too.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! I appreciate your kind words but really the polish is because I used RPG Maker, so I won't take too much credit for that lol!

A very polished game with high quality graphics and sound. The music is very upbeat (i.e. fast tempo), which I guess is part of the JRPG genre. Love the 3D 'dungeon' environment, the graphics are very nice and it has a cozy feel like walking around a garden :-)

Combat is not so cozy ;-) The combat system works well, but the enemies are tough and cause a lot of damage. The party took damage in the first battle, so I tried to escape the second battle but couldn't, and it was a total party kill :-(

Thanks for submitting!

PS: Good to give player choice of A/D or Q/E for strafe.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I like outdoors-y dungeon environment. Yeah some numbers adjustment is due for combat.

love the JRPG like enviroment and the boulders, and also elevation is cool!

Nice entry! A RPGM 3D that does not use too much billboarded stuff so we don't get sick. Boulder to make bridges is quite nice, although I wish there was more shortcuts huhuh. With how hard hitting enemies are, I could only take on 3/4 encounters before my dudes started dying and running of potions.

I played for a bit, unfortunately the game crashed after a while ; - ;  I should have read and used the Windows version.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Oh yeah, more shortcuts would be nice!

Submitted(+1)

Multi layer is a cool thing especially with the boulders for the traversal. The mini map was great also!

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yes, the theme for the dungeon are verticality and boulder block puzzles!

Submitted(+1)

The game itself could be really playable and more enjoyable if there was not so much enemy encounter for so little reward. You have to explore the map while avoiding fights because they tear through you at an unbelievable speed. Other than this balance issue, I think I follow other comment's opinion that it is an interesting mechanic with the maze (boulder, dragons, etc...). I'm sure the map can be worked on a bit more as well if you have more time :)
The music really fitted the "adventure party going on a quest" vibe, so that's nice and the monsters' design was really cool!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! My intention for this game is that it's focused on attrition and resource management, so I made the encounter rate high. But you can move the boulders to open up shortcuts so you don't have to slog through it again. One thing I notice though that player income is too low, monsters and chests give too little gold and the items are too expensive. For combat I think enemy evasion, not damage, is the issue. Its too high apparently. The map design is already good, yes, but economy and combat needs serious revisit. That's what I get from your and other's feedback. Thanks, I will do a postjam update!

Submitted(+1)

Really cool game! Honestly I didn't even know you could make 3D games in RPG maker, so I'm really impressed. Combat is a bit simplistic, but that is understandable, we only had 9 days after all :). Thanks for submitting the game!

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yeah this is an RPG Maker game, I used a plugin called MZ3D.

A solid RPG Maker entry. It could use a little love with custom assets / enemy balance. Because it is using stock assets, it looks almost identical to a couple entries I’ve seen in other game jams.

Game play wise, explanations were nice and it was good to have the ability to swap controls.

Given that the cost of items in the store is so high, it would be great if enemies dropped more gold. I’m not sure it is possible to grind enough to upgrade the whole team.

I did make it to the Crimson Dragon using the smoke bombs but it was impossible to beat it.

Thanks for creating and submitting this!

You can watch my playthrough here: https://youtu.be/pleAHHxOcH4

Developer

Thanks for playing and recording as always! Yeah watching your playthrough made me realize item and gear costs should be way cheaper, like 10x cheaper.

I understand that the limited ammo economy is there to give a more tactical, resource-management feel to the gameplay but it felt way too restrictive. After several times going back and forth I felt exhausted. On the positive side I liked how boulders were used as a puzzle element and allowed the maze to naturally loop back to certain places. Personally, I think if the numbers were tuned a bit differently then the overall gameplay experience would be a lot more smooth. I do like the idea of progression being gated by economy and smart item usage.

Also is this made with RPGMaker? How?

Developer

Thanks for playing! The back and forth loop is the intended experience, but I understand if it feels too restrictive, as I only start balancing this game an hour before the deadline lmao. I think the cause is enemy evasion and accuracy being way too high so you run out of items quicker. Thanks for pointing this out.

Also about the engine, I use a plugin called MZ3D that can be used to make 3D games in RPG Maker.

I played a few times from the beginning. In first two i couldn't find the escape button so i got stuck. Then i got wiped in other 2 runs, then i realized i can save the game but it didn't help improving my experience honestly. After a rough onboarding, i started the game for real but i couldn't go too far bcs after a few fights i ran out of curative items and ammo having to go all the way back to the portal, get wiped out while trying to escape the  monsters. This loop burned me out hard after a few runs and i threw the towel at last.  Another thing  is that i think characters should have a melee attack as a fallback. When you get out of ammo, you're just helpless and forced go all the way back to town. I don't know how CryptRat beat the game but i couldn't come even close to it :) I think the enemies are too tough for a starting area, there's some balance issue here.

To talk about the graphics of the game,  i like the atmosphere and aesthetics in general but i think you should have used a wider range of textures. I think there are the same green leaf textures everywhere, walls, ceiling, ground. Only different texture is the water. The green tone is way too dominant in my opinion. Also i played your game in last year's jam.  It was one of my most favorite games in that jam. Most of the assets in this game are the same with that game. If i hadn't played it, that probably wouldn't bother me that much.  Enemy sprites look nice, i like their animation and general particle effects in combat.

Map design is pretty cool. The verticality, pushing rocks, using them as a bridge etc. I'm familiar to it from the last year's game but it looks good in this game too.  The systems in the game work very well and stable. I played the browser version.

Developer(+1)

Oof rough onboarding huh. Maybe I should explain more on how the player is supposed to play the game so they wont get horribly slain. The very early game is intended to be rough, but maybe not that rough.

If I had to guess CryptRat abuses bombs (intended) and/or Throwing Knives that cause 33% max HP bleed (balance oversight). Also every time you return to town you get free revive, full heal, and full ammo refill, so you can grind near the town for a bit and build up your supplies. For my trek to the boss myself I brought 10 smoke bombs (guaranteed escape from random encounters) and 10 Ice Bombs.

FYI my last playtest before submitting got me to completion after 40 minutes, but turns out I shouldn't base the difficulty based on my experience solely. Lower numbers will be a given when (if) I update this game.

Yeah the graphics are bland I know, I'm ran out of time before decorating it lmao

Love your detailed feedback! Also thanks for having played my previous game!

I bought 8 ice bomb and bested the crimson dragon.

It was fun, I like the verticality and enjoyed trying to manage my overall resource to use how little money as possible.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks as always for playing!

Definitely not the target audio for this one, feels very JRPG or old FinalFantasy, with lots of character info up front.

That said, once I did get into the game it was fun, little challenging. The art for the maze view is good, the art for the fights are good, but they feel too different in style for me.

All in all though, nice entry, was fun to run around and try to work out the maze navigation, the rocks add a nice puzzle element to exploring that I enjoyed.

Hey thanks for playing! Appreciate you keep playing even though its not to your taste.
