This could easily have just been styled like tetris with colored blocks. The extra step to give it life and character is very much appreciated! I think it'd be good to have some way to incentivize taking the larger and more complex cats, since right now when given a choice you'd basically always pick the smaller or simpler cat shape.
Thanks! Agreed there, I think having a more complex scoring/objective system would be a top priority if we were to expand this.
Really enjoyed this one! Great theme and art, everyone looks so cosy!
I would have liked to been able to see all the cat tiles I currently have more clearly when choosing my next one. Maybe a row along the bottom?
Otherwise nicely executed idea!
Thanks so much! That's a good idea, since it is pretty much the whole strategic component.
Only thing I would like is for the rotation to be remembered when you pick a cat up which you've already placed.
Yep, definitely on the list of "I dunno why we forgot to add that" :)
I want to be able to role the cats over(mirror them) to make 'em fit! You could have front/back art for each cat.
Fun game, cute subject matter, very intuitive concept.
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Also, okay, I love this idea, so cute! Definitely something we would do if we were expanding this.
Very cute! I kept playing until I had too much total cat to fit on the bed hahaha. Some different grandma shapes I think would have been cool. Maybe some additional placement rules, like some cats having preferences for what cats that want or don't want to be next to. I also think when placing down a cat, a nice fluffy "plop" sound, like throwing a pillow on a bed, and maybe some dusty particle effects would be cute and help with the feel a bit. Overall it was a solid concept, I like it!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed!
Definitely agreed on additional "Grandma variety" as a way of adding some variation, it's something we thought about doing, but in the end just resorted to scooting her around randomly on each level :)
Also love the idea of a little thump when setting a cat down, that would _definitely_ make it feel more tactile.
At first I thought it was going to be a straight Cats in Tight Spaces clone but I like what you did with the formula by having the player choose the next cat. As some others have pointed out, the main weakness is a lack of win/loss state to let the player know that the game is over. I kept going until I couldn't place my cats anymore. Despite that it's a cute idea that's easy to understand and play, great work!
Thanks so much!
Yeah not communicating anything about win/loss was definitely a weakness. We'd originally planned to have some sort of a scoring system, the little mice that pop in at the bottom of the screen are a bit of vestigial UI for that lol
this is very well executed but I think it lacks something to be a "real game", like maybe you shouldn't have infinite tries? or there should be a timer (I guess it doesn't fit the cozy vibe tho)
Seems like a "real game" to me, the further you get in the harder it gets to get the correct arrangement without getting the negative points. I'm pretty sure it eventually becomes impossible to avoid negative points and if you get 6 in a single attempt you fail.
Definitely something we thought about but never really had time to execute on was some sort of scoring/goal. You can see the little mice getting stacked up at the bottom of the screen. Specifically one thing we thought about was having "sleep deprivation" carry over between levels to some degree, or otherwise have some more explicit management like that.
I very much enjoyed this one. The puzzle design was very clear, and the choice to "build my deck" after each puzzle added something extra to it. It seemed like at first - the bed was too empty, and at the end, there was no way to win. If you had the bed start small then increase slowly after each round it could perhaps accommodate the gameplay a bit more. I really appreciated the forgiveness of the coffee cups waking the lady up. The mouse counter on the bottom didn't mean anything to me
Here's a playtest!
Thanks for playing, and recording it! It was great to see another persons real time experience with it. I do think you're totally right about the "difficulty scaling" so to speak, with the too-easy beginning and impossible end.
We were hoping to add some additional mechanics, where maybe you could buy a bigger bed, or buy cat beds having certain cat combos/interactions (which I think you mentioned in the video!) etc. that was where the mice were supposed to come in: as a scoring/currency. Alas we didn't get to it!
Thanks so much for playing and for the thoughtful feedback! Glad you enjoyed!
Very cute! As a cat person, I really liked the theme! I found it a bit tricky to understand at first, I thought the R symbol might mean right click, so I didn't figure out how to rotate the cats straight away, but once I figured it out it was very fun!
Glad you thought it was cute! Definitely inspired by real world cat experiences lol
Oh that's weird! I think right click is also supposed to rotate the cats. Something to look into I guess!
Thanks for playing and for the feedback!
This game is so cute!! Reminds me of how our cat sleeps on our bed lol. I'm not sure if there's an end or not since it just kept going until it was impossible but I could defo see myself enjoying a longer game of this with more cat shapes and maybe different environments for them to sleep in and give poor granny her needed rest :)
Thanks! It was definitely heavily inspired by our cat who demands bedtime snuggles before we can sleep. There's no win state unfortunately, the only end is the the end screen with the old lady drinking coffee.
We were hoping to add some more mechanics, including maybe being able to get cat beds, or enlarge the bed somehow like you say, but didn't have time to get fancy :P
Thanks for the idea and for playing!
Nice block arranging game! I feel like I'm being forced to fail to end my run but I guess it's to be expected :D.
Yeah, unfortunately we didn't have time to add any mechanics that would allow for a forever run (something like powerups or whatnot) for the jam, cause i do feel like it's a bit of a bummer to have a game force you to fail. Maybe we could have added a "you win if you perfectly fill all the squares"...hmm
Either way, thanks for playing! (And sorry for the super late reply, caught a cold right after the jam ended)
i loved it! (btw the granny waking up when a cat touches her will haunt my dreams)
Hahaha! Glad you enjoyed it! Just got word from a friend that their 2 year old was VERY upset by the waking granny :'D So you're definitely not alone! Thanks for playing!
Great idea, love the vibe! A very relatable experience too
Thanks so much! Yeah it was definitely heavily inspired by one of our cats who MUST put her face on your face at bedtime before we can sleep :P
Very cute and satisfying cozy puzzle. I saw you are also new to game making. Keep at it, this is a wonderful concept that I can see being popular in the cozy mobile games community!
Thanks so much! Yeah we're pretty new, I was very excited to find this jam/youtube channel with such an active and passionate community.
Thanks for playing!
First run playing the game and got the bed completely filled with cats. It mostly took lucky picks, but it was still very satisfying.
