Fun little adventure game. I would've liked some more direction on where to go. Also checkpoints would've been nice. Good job!

Developer

I agree on checkpoints. i tried to make "paths" with the tiles to help visualize the flow. It's not as open as it deceptively seems. My goal was to bring some of that "adventure and wander"., let the player find the path. But I definitely agree with checkpoints.

This was a refreshing take on the genre!!

Took me a couple minutes to figure that I SHOULD use the second controls (and it wasn't optional) but after that, the gameflow was nice!

Loved how you interpreted the theme as well! Also liked how you have to really explore the corners of the map to be able to solve the puzzles, haha!
Solid entry! I had fun! 😊😊

Developer(+1)

Thanks :D. I enjoyed the experiment of a 1-2 player but still have 2 characters regardless on screen. One of the many things I wanted to add (but lack of time) was a toggle to have one character follow the other.

Very impressive for a game jam.  The game was well balanced overall, the two-world contrast was interesting, the world was large, and included dialogue.  Health icons indicating health that were able to be increased.  There was a lot of details that you were able to back in this game.

Thank you for the game!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for taking the time to play it. Yeah, I need to scope down some so I can get some other features in like save states, etc next time.  I'm glad it seems very enjoyed by everyone.

Well I died a few times and had to start over.  Heh.  I'm impressed with how much you got in there though.

Submitted(+1)

At first I tried to play both characters which was a bit confusing. Then my partner helped, but we died after the second gate and would have had to start all over... checkpoints would be nice. The artstyle was cute, there is potential in the game.

Developer

Awesome on having your partner play with you as well! Yes, I agree on the checkpoints. I hope you both had some fun though.

Submitted(+1)

It was fun and intriguing but then I died and I reset to the start :( I like the art and each room really felt like it expanded the map

Developer

Thanks. Sorry I didn't get anything set up in time for deaths.

Submitted(+1)

I really liked the art and the interaction between the two characters. I played it by myself at first, then invited a friend to play with me, and it was just as fun.

Developer

That is awesome! I think you're the first person to tell me that they got a second person to play with them. How was that experience?

Submitted(+1)

cool idea controlling the two characters. I just found it a bit too long to not have any checkpoints, I Enjoyed the personality in the characters dialog. Nice submission

Developer (1 edit)

That is VERY fair and something I'll be mindful of with making adjustments to the game after the jam. Thank you very much! :D

Submitted(+1)

I like the art style, and I enjoyed some of the pity dialogue bits too. One thing that felt a bit awkward was that if I attacked while holding a movement button, I’d stop moving but wouldn’t resume moving after the attack finished. Great job!

Developer

Yeah, that's something that I have to work on for sure. Thanks for the feedback and glad you liked it. :D

The presentation is spot on with this one, it nails the old pixel art JRPG back during the SNES days. I also appreciate the ability to control both characters with one controller for those who dont have a coop partner.

Developer

Thanks Gordon! My main goal was to hit on the nostalgia with what I loved back in that era. I was actually looking at Final Fantasy Tactics A2 on the art direction side for the characters. But the feel of the first Legend of Zelda.

Submitted(+1)

love the JRPG art style. hit boxes felt a bit large. good story campaign. love me a good NES style rpg

Developer

Thanks! I'll have to look at those hit boxes. They may have shifted when I added in the animation sprites (well, the sprites shifted due to change in pivot). Sorry about that. Glad you liked the style and vibe.

Your pixel art is beautiful as always. The bantering between the characters is a joy to read. It’s a good thing that I was able to try the game out when you can’t die. Now I need checkpoints. Agreed with a comment below that attack shouldn’t cancel movement. Also would be great if you can figure out a better way for a single person to manage two characters.

Developer

Yeah, I agree with all of that. I was thinking of putting a button press to have the one character follow the other. I didn't have time for that :(.

Submitted(+1)

Great game! I loved it!

But it would be even better if attacking didn't completely cancel the movement input. For example, if you are holding 'A' to move left and click attack, the character should either stop to attack (or attack while moving), and then resume moving automatically because you are already holding the movement button. Right now, I have to release the key and press it again to start moving after an attack.

Also, it wasn't obvious at first that there was another location to the right. I spent some time in the first area trying to figure out how to destroy the wall, lol. Finally, teleporting between locations feels a bit too abrupt.
But overall the game is cool!

Submitted(+1)

Really nice! Love the art style but it took me longer than I'd like to admit to realize I can attack as the slime haha

Developer

Ahaha! That's all good.  He actually has the higher damage in the "other" world compared to Barbara.

I really like the main character  ^^ The connection concept is also really well thought out. Overall, this game leaves me with really positive feelings. GJ

Developer

Awww. Thank you so much! I tried to hit a few connection notes to make sure it was apparent :D.

Submitted(+1)

You absolutely nailed it — really fantastic work! <3

Submitted(+1)

I like the story with the connection and the 2 player game. Main menu art is nice!

Submitted(+1)

Lovely little game. A nice classic feel with the art and sounds. Took me a minute at the start to realise you had to control both characters. Congrats!

Developer

Thanks!

Submitted(+1)

Nice idea. I think you should make clearer how the rooms are connected, sometimes it's not obvious, and looks random. Other than that, it's a well done game

Developer

Yeah, I have to figure out how to adjust the export so it'll show the full screen within the space of the non-full screen view.

Developer(+1)

I fixed the visual issue that the non-full screen was cutting off some of the sides.

Submitted(+1)

Nice concept and looks good. Can get confusing to see which side of map you can navigate to.

Developer

Totally fair. I had issues with the web build to show the full camera without being fullscreen. Full screen mode, you can see everything.

Submitted(+1)

thing game is very well made, classic puzzles, theres a large map to explore here, good job

Developer

Thank you very much :D

Submitted(+1)

Awesome job! Great Aesthetics. 2 character combo is great fun, even being able to just control both myself on keyboard and choose who I wanted to control for a bit.

Maps/camera were a bit off sometimes, couldn't see which part of the side of the screen I could go through or not (bush blocking most of the way but one hole, couldn't see that hole, had to try across the whole side).
And yeah maybe for Jam game wise, would be nice to have a restart after last level complete, mostly because I couldn't judge how close I needed to get to an enemy to attack, kept finding myself surprised I'd run into them.

Loved the characters and story and chat between them. As expected, you've done a great job on this :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for that feedback. Yeah, I was a bit annoyed trying to get the full camera to work in the browser without going fullscreen. If you fullscreen, it shows the extra tile space at the edges. Thanks for the wonderful feedback and kind words. I agree with you 100%.

Developer(+1)

I fixed the visual issue that the non-full screen was cutting off some of the sides.
