I based the core game loop on a roguelike tutorial I have been writing. I also used openly available sound effects, fonts, and icons.

I love Dungeon master, so I felt like I was back. But its just walking and fighting monsters, and finding the exit! I would take more!
However well done. What you delivered does work.
Weird how seed 44 is default and have the exit right by the start.

felt the octopod under my skin! :D The sound effect was so cool!
Good game with a good story :)

It was actually seed 42! I did a lot of extra wandering before I found out there was a puzzle and I was expected to solve it. (I also accidentally left the dungeon on my first attempt almost immediately.)

It seems like the enemies are always perfectly positioned so that you need to step into their attack before you can hit them yourself. I couldn't find a way to force one to step closer to me first, and my attempts at it caused a second creature to appear from another direction. It turns out they're quite delicate compared to me, the non-warrior, non-hero thief.

I liked what there was, it's quite atmospheric.

I simply loved it, and I was terrified too. Congratulations!!!!

Glad you liked it! Sounds like the atmosphere did its job haha :)

Dungeon crawlers are all-time classics. I found this one funny because I just left the Dungeon in 7 turns in my first playthrough and in 215 in my second, when I wanted to explore more - without solving a puzzle at all. Flying octopi: why not? But because the player does make more damage than them, there was no real challenge. Nicely done anyway.

pretty atmospheric dungeon crawler, figuring out where to go and what to do was quite fun. Feels like a neat time capsule of games from way back in the day, I approve :)

Developer(+1)

Glad you liked it! I grew up playing these 1st person crawlers so it was a blast to finally try building my own.

Really cool game! Very impressive that you got procedural generation and auto mapping to work in such a short time span, it seems to work really well. Nice use of the theme with the light beam puzzle! I tried a couple of different seeds but the results screen seems to always say 44. I tried seeds 44, 100, and 50 but my results screen always said 44.

Other than that, I didn't encounter any issues. Awesome game!

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it! I adapted some previous procgen dungeon code from a 2D project, but getting it to work in 3D required jumping through some hoops. Thanks for noting the win screen seed bug, that one totally flew past me!

Very cool game. I couldn't beat seed 44 since I'm suck at dungeon crawlers in general.

I didn't know why there was a health bar in a room with a dummy thing so I kept running around thinking it was a boss lol.

Developer

Thank you for playing!

Pretty cool concept, visuals and mechanics.

Was a bit confused as I was able to walk out of the barrow on the first turn but after finding out about the puzzle it became a fun little puzzle game.

Keep up the good work :D

I thought about fixing the instant exit bug but ended up leaving it just for fun. Thank you for playing!

This was really really cool to see, pretty ambitious idea for a jam but really well done. Love having the grid based movement in a setting like this, it's something I've not really seen as much. Great work!!

Glad you enjoyed it!

What. A. Gem. Really glad you stopped by and therefore lead me here - I really had a blast from the past. It's really strange how restrictions (like the movement here for example) can enhance the game experience - I was really on the edge of my seat. perfect atmospheric sound did a lot as well.

sidenote: I think you could even lean more into that retro feeling with your visuals by purposefully rendering into a lower resolution and limiting the color palette (down to 1bit even, maybe?), making it almost look like the fake 3D these early games used to draw these dungeons...  Just saying it could do a lot for your game with only a little bit of experimenting.

BTW: the door seems to be openable right from the start, if you just walk through ;-)

Developer

Wow, thank you for the kind words! I was wondering when someone would catch the open exit bug haha

My original intent was exactly retro pixel art textures, but I couldn’t settle on an aesthetic. I’m planning on experimenting with that over the next couple of weeks.

Nice story and the UI is very polished. Maybe add a prompt at the start that connecting the beam from lamps is needed to exit the level. I could do it without the prompt as well, since they seems to be the only interactive props in the game, The movement and control mechanics overall are also polished. Nice work !

Developer(+1)

Glad you enjoyed it! I grew up on games like Myst that just dropped you in a world and made you figure it out, a prompt would make it too easy haha

Love these old school dungeon crawlers and love the 2.5D monsters. Could use some more damage feedback and maybe more of the puzzle elements

Developer

Thanks for playing! There's a lot more I'd like to add, including as you say, more feedback and puzzles.

I also got seed 44 as an earlier comment and the initial torch can cast it's beam onto the wrong target which doesn't progress the puzzle so is a touch confusing. Nice way of escaping a dark cave by bringing light towards the entrance feels very thematic! I would like a stay still option to movement so it's possible to get optimal combat. But otherwise a cool atmospheric game! :)

Developer

The beam changing color is meant to indicate that it's pointing at the right target. I'll add a sound effect and message also so it's more clear. Thanks for the feedback!

Submitted

yeah I realized that once I found the right beam but getting the wrong one first get me a bit confused :

Submitted(+1)

beat the game and liked it but couldn't what does get connecting beams do, I think you should continue to develop this game. BTW please rate mine too 😄 my game - taking the route

Developer

When the beams are all connected the final one opens the exit door. Thanks for playing!

Great game! Took time to understand how it works but then it was great to play

Developer(+1)

Glad you enjoyed it!

Beat it on seed 44.

The puzzle took a bit of thinking as there wasn't an indication when both orbs were pointing at at other, beyond that though it was fun and had an interesting atmosphere!

Developer

Thanks for playing!
