How does your game fit the Theme & Boss Battle Edition?
I made it about a villain, who was bored of being evil, so he decides to change it up and switch to the good side. However the replacement villain takes this as an opportunity too say he defeated the villain, and now its up to you to re-become evil and take control before the story collapses.

Game Engine?

Construct

Game Engine / Tools (Other)?
I use GANDI-IDE (Which is a better scratch) to make all the assets because I like SVGs.

Self-made & used stuff?

Homemade Graphics/Art (e.g. models and/or textures)
Assets (e.g. free or purchased assets used in the game)

Have you joined a game jam before?

No

Roughly how much time did you spend developing? (in hours)
20 to around 30 because of school and having strict parents.

Anything else you'd like to share about your game or development process?
Yeah it was really fun and I hope I win lol.

Story was interesting and I like the cube guys. Well done for a first game jam.

The story in this game is fantastic, haha, and the humor is just right. It was really fun to watch the boss progress, especially thanks to the cutscenes and audio, which added a lot of immersion to the gameplay.

Speaking of the art style, I really liked the way the food items were placed in the environment. I’m not entirely sure why, but even though they were clearly a bit different from the rest of the art, they still managed to fit in naturally without feeling out of place.

The gameplay is easy to understand and feels quite polished, but it could be interesting to add more attack options and maybe a bit more speed for the player. Also, a small variation of tougher enemies before the final battle would have been a great addition.

I have to say, it was a really engaging game. The facial expressions added a lot to the personality and emotion. You did an excellent job, seriously. Congratulations on that, and I wish you the best of luck in the jam!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for this in depth-review! I will say I wouldve loved to added like a mini-boss/gaurd before the castle, and a dash mechanic or bow, but I ran out of time.

Great game! Excellent theming and story, cute art and fun boss battle.

thank you!!!!!

The art, animations, and voice acting make the game feel very genuine and personal. Great work!

Developer

Thank you :>

I had a lot of fun, without a doubt. For me, the voice acting was one of the strongest points of the game. It matched really well with the type of story, the art style, and the color palette. I also really liked how the same voice was used to characterize different characters, each with different references and personalities.

The facial expressions also stood out to me a lot. They were simple, but they conveyed each character’s feelings perfectly.

If you allow me to share one thought: I think the level itself could have had a bit more variation. There were two enemies with the same effect, or almost the same effect, at least I did not notice if they caused different damage. Maybe adding a small obstacle, still keeping the same simple style, could help break the cycle of just holding “D” until the end.

I thought the boss battle was great. It gives the feeling that it is a little difficult, because you need to repeat it a few times and understand the movement sequence. But then you realize the fight actually ends on the second life, and that is a huge relief, haha. The third life being finished through the scene was very clever, and it gives the player a nice little break.

Keep going with this creativity. I am sure many unique games will come from it.

Thank you for this in debth review, I was planning on adding more stuff like the grandma, ive seen a lot of people complaining about movement, so next update, im probably gonna add a Wizard that will make you go back to the village to get his spellbook or something, and in return give you a dash, I also wanted to add a mini-boss gaurd in the castle, that's why it's so empty, lol. Anyway, thank you for reviewing my game!

Submitted(+1)

Solid submission! The visuals are great and I had fun in the boss battle. Gameplay is a bit simple, but this can be improved later. The voice acting is cool, And the game itself has the potential of going further by having more events between the beginning and the boss battle. Congrats!

Btw as a side note, for some technical/unknown reason the game runs poorly in Firefox, but I switched to chrome an everything runs smoothly!

Developer(+1)

Yeah, normaly on web browsers that limit ram usage, Thats the reason I added Preformance Mode! Also if I had more time I would have definetly added more stuff like the grandma to do before the boss.

Submitted(+1)

Well done! Cutscenes, audio, SFX, voice lines, story and almost everything was perfect! i had a lot of fun playing this game. My personal advice is to make the player a little faster and the fights before the boss a little more challenging, but it's just my personal opinion. Keep it up with this originality!! :D

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I wanted to add more stuff, more swords, and an ability to dash. I could go on, but I unfortunately ran out of time.

Submitted(+1)

lmao love the cutscenes, they are amazing, as well as voice acting. The main gameplay is nothing to talk about honestly, you just hold D and press LMB sometimes, some additions to that part would be great.

The boss battle is nice, well done and polished. Not sure why the boss has 3hp though if the boss fight ends after 2 hits.

Developer(+1)

The boss "dies" after 2 hits mainly because, in the cutscene, he lives on 1 heart, and you finish him off with the crown, I was gonna give him 4 hearts and 3 hits but it was to hard to live off of, I wanted to add more features like Bows, Swords, Dashes, ETC in the actual game, but I ran out of time.

Submitted(+1)

Seems a bit unnecessary tbh, I get your idea, but including third heart to the UI and not using it feels more like a bug than an idea. I think you would be better including this last heart in the cutscene and show that he loses it when he is hit by the crown.

Developer(+1)

I forgot to add that before I submitted lol

Very nice game, always good to see some fellow construct 3 users!
I don't know if you've done this with the 50 events limit, if so, very impressive. whilst the art and audio is peak (loved the dubbing) i thought the gameplay was a bit too simple. finally the boss was hard, considering this is a jam, try to keep thing as easy as possible.
Other than that perfect use of the theme (it should win this category) and a very solid first game jam entry!

i will love to see yout next projects, followed!

Submitted(+1)

P.s i saw another review... Don't let me skip the cutscenes! The reason why your game follows the theme soo perfectly (this theme was really difficult to follow btw), is because of cutscenes. A wall of text, or the ability to skip, wouldn't have done it, because if someone skipped the cutscenes he would probably miss the game concept completely!
So quick tip don't follow everything that is said to you (expecially if it's ai generated *cough *cough ) read and think about every criticism, but you should always find your own conclusions!

Developer

First of all, thank you. Second of all, yes, I use Construct 3, and my school actually gave me an access code so I can use infinite events until like June 30th. And third, I was planning on adding a skip cutscene button, but it having like a warning saying "You will miss the entire storyline or smth, so uh are you sure" or like that. I wanted to add that for the testers that just wanna play the boss battle but I just didnt save enough time for it.

Developer(+1)

Also I love your game!

Submitted(+1)

Loved your game buddy.

The storyline and your dubs are the highlight, also the visual and animations are very pretty.

I could give you some feedbacks, but your game have so much pretty details that looks like if you have more time you can make a great game, keep going with game development.

Congrats on your submissions

Developer

Thank you! :>

Great game! Loved the handrawn visuals though it felt inconsistent a few times. Amazing storyline too! I think that the dialogues were quite hard to interpret because of the muffled speech.

Developer

Thanks! and yeah, I wanted to add subtitles because my microphone SUCKS (which I would buy a new one if I won lol) but I ran out of time so I just increased the volume and just hoped it was clear. (also the hyperrealistic bread was supposed to be a joke XD)

Hi, I'm Acuristic, the developer of "DeathWish". Here's my feedback:

Things That I liked/Enjoyed

  • Visuals: The visuals of the game are Really good I really loved your art style, but it is kinda inconsistent, with the food being hyper realistic and the rest of the art being, cartoony.
  • Cutscenes: The cutscenes at the start were Fabulous and also it was a nice little touch that the character's mouth moved when they are talking.
  • Story: The story was Amazing, it was really immersive, good job!
  • Enemy AI: At first I thought I can just jump to skipp fighting the enemies, but was suprised to know that they jump too!

Things which can be Improved:

  • Movement: The movement felt slow, this made me  feel like the character is moving in space. The jump was quite floaty too. You can increase the speed and the gravity of your game to fix this, as it made the lasers which cover half the area in the boss fight very hard to dodge.
  • Cut Scenes: The cutscenes felt a bit slow, you should add a skip button, as it gets quite repetetive after a while.
  • Progression: The game in overall felt a bit slow paced, it is mostly because the slow, unskippable cutscenes, the slow and floaty movement which further reinforces the idea of the game being laidback instead of a boss fight and the boss fight itself being more of a cartoony, silly kind made the boss feel quite easy.
  • Enemy Ai: Even with the enemies jumping to attack you, it doesn't stop the player's movement allowing to skip to the enemies and just go straight to the boss fight, this can be fixed by adding a knock back tot he player whenever under attack.
Developer(+1)

Thank you for this in-depth review. I would like to mention that I had a lot of solutions for these issues, I just didnt have enough time to implement them, like for the slow movement and ignoring enemys, I was planning on adding more featurles like the grandma, that reward you for killing enemys, so like if you killed 5 zombies from a wizards yard you would unlock a dash, knocking two issues at once, but by that time it was like day 9 so I had to work on the boss ): (also for the bread and apple stuff, I just genuienly thought it would be funny to just make it stand out like that lol)

Submitted(+1)

Its okay, no one in a game jam submits their project exactly as they thought it would be, we all mess up somewhere or another, and it is quite silly and if thats the style you were aiming for then go for it!

Submitted(+1)

Lovely game! It's simple but it has lots of character and a really becoming hand-made feel to it. Good job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I love your game by the way its SO FUNNY dude

Submitted(+1)

Fun! The animations/cutscenes kinda impressed me haha, and the combat was pretty fun too. A slightly more consistent art style would take your work along way (like fonts and the health items), but really complete and overall a fun game. Good job!

Developer

Thank you! I tried to keep the art style consistent and when making the food I just couldnt make it look right, so I thought it would be funny to just make them super realistic for no reason. XD
