Game gives me a feel that development team wanted to add some Rock N Roll to the jam! :D

Submitted

God, that intro was incredible and the art design for this game is great.  A lot of care was put into the presentation and you get full marks for that; the gameplay itself needs some more polish.  My rate of fire stunk so it just made fights a damage trade slug fest since I couldn't jump high enough to dodge attacks nor duck under them.  Also, the camera lags just a little too much; it would help if you kept it closer and tighter to the player.  Good job!

Developer

Thanks very much for the kind words on my art!! We simply ran out of time as far as game mechanics and polish went. Thanks for playing!!

the spritework and cutscenes are very well done! overall artstyle and premise have a charming quality to it. I've a few suggestions for improvements, this game would benefit from fluid movement because currently it seems the main character can only perform 1 action at a time. It would definitely much better if I was able to shoot and run at the same time, and also make the shield activate quicker (because right now it's way too slow and cause me to miss the blocking window). Other than that, this game has really strong foundation for a really fun retro style run n gun games like metal slug.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, we plan to try and polish a bit after the jam (so keep an eye out).  Didn't feel right doing substantial updates outside the 10 days. Thanks for playing and for kind words!

Really fun game, loved the pixel art and intro. Would suggest not having the camera move directly with the player jump (either slug it or just don't bother as it doesn't gain anything as you're not needing to see higher on the game screen). Would add health bars to the aliens just so you know how close to death they are and maybe something to show how powerful your gun is - the fact i'm taking time to write this is more to do with how much I enjoyed it so please don't think i'm being critical! Well done!

Developer (1 edit)

Don't worry about being critical, any feedback is good! Thanks for playing our game! Yeah we simply ran out of time for polish, just got everything we could in bare bones wise. Might smooth it out sumore after the Jam results, so keep an eye on it thanks!

The art style and animations are amazing! And the little intro cinematic is brilliant, really sets the story of the game without much dialogue, I loved it! I played the web version, my character got stuck at some point and could not move forward. But the game is super promising, with extra polish it will be great!

Developer

Why Mr Ian, you are gonna make a fella blush.  (in a southern female American accent).  Thanks for playing!! I think the not moving back was to force you to fight the boss, could be wrong tho, i aint no programmer (happened to me too. )

Love the art and animations, very polished!  Reminds me of Earthworm Jim.

Tuned a bit too easy - I didn't even realize i had a trash can shield until it was over, and no health bar or anything.   Tried it again and the shield was just too clunky to use.  Was also a bit jarring that if you shoot while jumping, you lose all momentum.  Feels like there should still be some follow-through.

I also liked the variety of enemies and they all held true to the junk yard theme.  The one with the "headlights" was a bit strange though.

Developer

Yeah i thought i would be better at designing the junk yard enemies seeing as it was my idea to do that. haha.

The game is fun and really well produced. The graphics and cinematics are really well done, with a good cartoony feel. It helps to have a team.

It's good that shooting at the alien is the second thing the man does, the first thing being being kind and talking. It changes from dumb brutes running around shooting at everything still moving.

On a French keyboard, Q is on the location of A, and pressing Q works, unlike other games. The game can actually be played with a controller thanks to the default bindings ; I was just missing the shield.

Shooting stops the movement, this is a nice detail.

A problem I can report : the enemies are sometimes in strange places, like mid-air. I need to jump and shoot to hit them.

It's a fun game. I didn't find the link with the theme, though.

Well done !

PS : the Windows build didn't run correctly under Linux and Wine. The game went full screen directly, the title screen was full, the fade-to-black was only on the center, then a black screen and nothing else happens.

Excellent work by the whole team!

This game feels incredibly unique, and you can tell a lot of care and thought went into every part of the experience. The opening cutscene immediately grabbed my attention and did a great job setting the tone for what was coming next.

I also really appreciated how distinct the overall design feels. It has its own identity, and that's something I always love to see in a jam project.

Honestly, I would have loved to keep playing and see even more of what the team had planned. Congratulations to everyone involved, this was a fantastic submission!

Very impressive entry! Shout out to the whole team! This was a funny Metal Slug-like game, and the fact that it has actual cutscenes is really impressive. Needless to say, the art is incredibly clean and beautiful. With artwork of this quality, I believe you could land an artist role at any indie studio. The animations were amazing as well. Having multiple enemies with multiple clean animations is seriously impressive. I enjoyed the game from start to finish.

I do have a few suggestions that I think could enhance the experience even further. First, the game lacks background music during the stages. Adding one or more tracks would enhance the atmosphere significantly. Second, the game could benefit from more feedback effects. For example, adding effects when the player or enemies get hit would greatly improve the game feel. Since you're using Unity, I'd suggest checking out Feel by More Mountains and All In 1 Sprite Shader by Seaside Studios. I used both extensively in my own game, and they're very easy to set up, extend, and customize. Third, the UI, especially the health bar, felt a bit small. For reference, I played the Windows desktop version. Finally, I found the game a bit easy. A more gradual increase in difficulty could improve the sense of progression, although I think the game already does a good job of introducing new abilities and enemies with each stage.

That said, this is still an incredible entry. The presentation, art, animation, and overall polish are outstanding, and it's clear that a lot of care went into making it. Great work!

Developer

Thanks for feedback, yeah the team is relatively green.  So we are just glad we got anything submitted in the time frame! We are planning to refine it moving forward just for practice for everyone, so keep an eye out for an update after the Jam. And thanks for the kind words, ide love to animate as a job.  If you get any indie traction with your awesome game, put in a good word for me! haha

The art in this game was really good. I was super impressed with the cutscenes.

The block feature wasn't as responsive as I would have liked, and so the game played more like an 80s style arcade game than a modern platformer, but I figured out the pattern on the second run. I would have loved some in-game music to really amp things up. The chainsaw things really dominated the soundscape because you could hear them off-screen, and there was little other sound.

All-in-all, a really solid entry, and with some tweaking could become a great game!

This game was a lot of fun 😄 The art style immediately reminded me of Earthworm Jim, and I especially loved the opening cutscene — it did a great job setting the tone and showing off the game's personality.

If I could suggest anything, I'd add run-and-gun shooting, since stopping every time I fire breaks the flow a little. A dodge roll would also be hilarious — the character looks like he'd do the funniest combat roll and instantly pop back onto his feet 😄

"It's Junkin time" >:D

The cutscene and visuals are immaculate, super well done!

The melee slapping enemies were never a threat.

The block/shield was a lil slow to pull out and seemed to have a cooldown which made it fairly ineffective against blocking projectiles (because their firerate is higher than I can keep blocking).

Music was louuuud, we've got that in common between our games :P

Overall a neat game! ^o^

It's me, the winner!

The cutscenes are great, especially the intro.

The game plays well, though it feels a bit weird for all forward momentum to be lost when firing the gun (more so when jumping.)

There's a great feeling of increased power when the boss from one level becomes a regular, easily disposed of enemy in the next level.

The sounds are good, though the explosion seemed to cut off abruptly/early for whatever reason.

The stages themselves would benefit from some background music.

Character designs and animations are well done.

wow this is a work of art. Really well done you should be very proud gg!

This is a crazy amount of artwork and animation for a 10-day jam! Amazing job.

Developer(+1)

Cheers man! Redneck gotta shoot, what can i say!? haha

Fun intro, enjoyed it, and helped explain the game quite well ;)
Is there a skip function though for if seen it before? on restart I just want to get back into the game again.

Camera placement wanted to be down a little, or not follow him up, loosing sight of the ground wasn't great.
The bin lid shield could do with being more responsive in my opinion, want to be able to gt it up as I see attacks coming. Mostly found myself having to pause as I'd just shot, to it taking to long to get set up and on,.then not lasting on for long enough.

Love the concept and art and feel for the game in other ways, I truly hope you guys continue it more!

Well done team!

Nice character and very good intro, but… where are my powerups? =P

A very good first game, but I think you need more work on the mechanics and with the UI.

The cinematic animation is great, It looks so cool. But I I think the gameplay need a little bit more polished.  One the thing I notice is that scene transition screen. It doesn't cover up my whole screen. I think it is set to scale with pixel size rather than scale with screen size in unity canvas. But I heard that this is most of you guys' first game and I am really impressed. The art style, level design and cinematic intro  are really well done and you nailed it.

Submitted (1 edit)

That intro cinematic is fire !  🔥Absolutely loved it. The gameplay needs more refining though, the drawing shield is sluggish and enemies moving up in y axis are kinda annoying when you cannot shoot them. Art is superb. A polished version will be superb.
