I respect the ambition on display, the fact that many of the assets are clearly custom made and the inclusion of quite a lot of dialogue and lore for such a short period.

In terms of improvements, I would make some of  the dialogue skippable or able to be sped up. This was most apparent at the "Story tomb"  event. At some point, the bit overstays it's welcome and unfortunately, there's no way to exit from the dialogue.

Otherwise great work in doing so much in such a short period

Developer

Thanks for testing out the game!  I agree the "Story tomb" was a bit much.  There is no way you could fit that much text onto a tombstone.  If we do further development on the project, we would want to give people the option to read, and speed up/exit the dialogue.

Agree with what others have said about the ambition and potential here! I can see this definitely expanding into a rich game with a cool story. I had some minor issues with the menu UIs only taking a quarter of the screen, but that wasn't a huge deal. Overall, nice work!

Nice retro-style game, really ambitious for a jam, but has potential to go further after the jam ends. Good job!

Wow, it was really ambitious! The scope seems a bit large for a game jam but congrats for trying! And you made so much assets by yourself, that's an impressive amount of work!

Developer

It was ambitious, maybe a bit too much.  But thank you for trying the game!

Really enjoyed the atmosphere and storytelling of the game. 😄 The world feels intriguing, and the journey has a nice sense of mystery that kept me curious about what would happen next.

The presentation and overall mood work very well together, making it a memorable experience. Thanks for sharing your project!

Very ambitious in scope and quite unfinished...

The dialogue parts need a way to speed them up...

Main menu and overlays didn't scale properly.

Switching characters didn't seem to work, even though at some points someone else from the party gave their thoughts...

A solid prototype with quite a big scope and potential! The music is really cool and overall the game looks quite promising.

(I suppose, in web version there is still that bug some people are talking about with cave rocks, where the text appears multiple times)

But besides that, the game seems quite polished!

Thank you for trying out the game!  I'm glad you enjoyed it.

It was probably a bit too ambitious, but some groundwork for an rpg was there. Cool that you made your own music. I think it needs a bit more stuff to do to get more engaging.

On the one hand: yeah, making a RPG, even in 2D, in a GameJam is an ambitious project (I did so in 3D ;-) It reminded me of games made with RPG Maker - if you made all the foundation systems yourself, wow! Nice that you have different music for every scene. And the descriptions of the things to find gave some background info.

On the other hand: I did not find the important elements you announced. No other characters (I pressed Q and E), not the "big intro text" - I read both signs at the portals but they didn't reveal much. I collected apples and flowers but they didn't seem to have a purpose and they did not appear in the inventory.  Nothing was there.

I had no stats, too. The whole blue window was basically useless.

The save dialog is cruel: "Do you want to save? <pressing Z> Sorry, not implemented". Why do you ask when it's not there?

I stumbled into the mine by chance. There was no hint outside that this one rock could be an entry while the others weren't. Inside the left passage was blocked, combined with an ominous warning in bigger letters. I could do nothing here. And I could do nothing at the lever, far left outside.

Ok, there maybe is a great RPG behind all this, and obviously some other players found more. I used the web version, maybe the download version is different. I have played many RPGs but got stuck here. So I think the onboarding should be extended.

I really tried, read all info texts I could find, walked to all places the cute dragon was able to reach, but that's all I found.

A lot of the items you bring up are issues we were facing as we were developing the game.  Our scope was too ambitious, so rather than developing a few systems and being able to keep things clean, there were too many systems that people could get stuck on, that were not able to be implemented which also distracted from other work that could have been done.  The battle system that was originally discussed didn't get into the game.  Creating the initial menu, then submenus was a lot of work that wasn't able to be utilized.  The inventory system was attempted to be developed but time ran out on getting that into the game.  The dialogue system also needing to be developed, which got quite a bit of functionality into it, but not everything, like making choices or being able to speed through text.  Work was done an an intro scene, but not completed.  Switching the characters was an idea the came mid-way through (not wanting to hog the main character status all to myself, LOL) and shouldn't be been too much work to implement, but was a lower priority and work on other systems came first.  It would have likely been better for us to limit our systems and better develop them.

This was the biggest team I have worked with in a game jam, and we are all learning.  Game jams give you a good idea of what you are capable of.

You can pass through the caves after the text to get to the other side and to the village.

That is just some of my thoughts, but thanks again for testing it out.

I didn't know I could walk over the rocks inside the cave. The visuals of the rocks combined with the text popping up when you reach them made me assume it was a dead end, looking over the other comments, I think a lot of people got stuck here.  I saw what looked like a village in your screenshots though, and I became determined to find it!

Making an RPG is a really ambitious goal but it seems like you have a good foundation for one. It was a fun space to explore, and I liked all the flavor text scattered around on interactable objects.

I like the effect of the text slowly appearing combined with the sound effect, it adds a lot of charm and character. It would be nice if they could be optionally skipped for those situations where you accidentally examine the same things twice.

I enjoyed my time with it, I love old school RPGs, so it was very nostalgic. Great job!  :)

Developer

Thank you for your comments and trying out the game.  We added a lot of intractable objects so people could have a lot of interesting things to read, and give indications of the setting and story.  So, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Developer

Haha, I didn't work on the map part of the game jam, so I got stuck on the rocks too :)

I really like the story telling and it is big, but a bit empty.

It was really cool to see another Godot game in the jam! The project feels very ambitious for a jam game, especially with the amount of maps, dialogue, music, and RPG elements you managed to put together in such a short time.

The retro RPG vibe was probably my favorite part. It really reminded me of classic old-school adventure games, and the soundtrack helped a lot with that atmosphere. Exploring the world and interacting with things around the map was also fun.

You can definitely tell there were a lot of ideas and passion behind the project, even if not everything could be fully implemented during the jam timeframe. Overall, I think this has a very solid foundation and a lot of potential for future development.

Great work to the whole team!

Thank you for your comments.  We like the old retro RPGs here. ;)  It was definitely an ambitious project, and there were a lot of things we were not able to implement.  But we were glad to get in what we could and glad you enjoyed it!

Cool little retro RPG! These kinds of games always take a massive amount of work to pull off, so well done to the whole team. Great effort!

I got preoccupied reading the tombstones: image.png image.png that was fun until I got caught into a story tomb (please add skip/exit button).

Playing as a friendly dragon is an interesting concept and you managed to make a lot of stuff in the game already.

The main menu seems to not expand compared to the game. The font is quite small size/hard to read, though.

Overall it’s a solid jam game, well done!

Thank you for trying it out.  I agree with your suggestions.

you’re welcome, good luck on your journey!

The visuals and especially the music really reminded me of playing Pokémon on a Game Boy emulator years ago 😄 It had that nostalgic retro handheld vibe, which I liked a lot.

Definitely a game with potential 👍

Well, a relaxing game. Not much to do than walk around. Hopefully the little thing gets something to eat. Good sounds. I managed to reach .. the end of the world..

Developer

The little thing is pretty pudgy, so I think it is doing alright.  LOL

Submitted(+1)

i first try didn't understand the game, and i read the chapter1 of the story and its interesting.. love the mysterious story connected through different characters, exploration, and the music is the best, but i couldn't play the game further. i'm stuck, and i couldn't find a way to squeeze through the tiny gap, or will our dragon become tiny after starving so that he can squeeze?? maybe.. I think there should be some instructions or objectives on what to do next..

Developer

It was an ambitious project for a game jam.   At this stage the most you can do is explore a bit.  However, It is possible to get to the first village and beyond through a cave in the second map.  I hope too many people aren't getting caught by the tight squeeze joke.

Thank you for your comments and trying out the game!

Was nice to play as a dragon and wandering around the village. Got me laughing a little when I could knock on the doors. It was nice that there is a bigger story behind and it unravels piece by piece. Thanks for the game!

I'm guessing that the key to progress in the game is switching between different characters who each have their own special skill. Perhaps one can activate levers, one can squeeze through tight spaces, one can decipher old writing and so on? As it is, I couldn't find a way to do that, and so couldn't get past the tight squeeze/lever area at the start of the second screen. I also couldn't find the story tombstone, perhaps it was further along in the journey?
