Really love the aesthetic and sound design of this! Great way to reinvent the genre but keep the core of the game. This would go so hard as a mini-dungeon crawler with different characters or power-ups (e.g., I like how I didn't feel compelled to slay the ghosts when the sword did a good job keeping them away; would be very intrigued by a character that actively encourages players to go after ghosts via some sort of vampirism and/or one that just avoids them entirely with something like a speed boost).
Thanks for the feedback! I like the ideas you gave for how to expand on the game.
This is my review of Dungeon Walker
Overall
A very solid and almost complete entry with a lot of very good aspects but sadly, IMHO, very classic reinterpretation of the OG.
Graphics
UI is basic but effective with nice contrasted color and a nice font. Very nice 3d authoring for ghosts, coins and dungeon walls. Maze would have gained a lot if corridors were as narrow as the player body width, it would have added a lot to the jumpscare feeling.
Sound
No music in title. Gloomy and very good music in-game. Sound effects are very immersive.
Gameplay
No menu, no pause, no settings. Ghost ai doesn’t look right, they ignore you and suddenly you’re dead. Starting the game facing a wall is not a very good way to present the game to the player. Maybe start in a different and safe room and then enter the proper level. No tutorial, no onboarding. Doesn’t play very well in the browser because the mouse is not captured and it prevents proper turning of the camera.
Thank you for your detailed write up! I'm sorry to hear you had some issues with it. My design goal going into the process was to recreate the original Pac-Man as accurately as possible with a first person dungeon crawler aesthetic, so I'm glad to hear you think it's a very classic interpretation. As for mouse capture, the game does capture your cursor during gameplay, perhaps you accidentally alt+tabbed out of the game window and it became uncaptured.
Hey! About the mouse capture, yes, that’s the common problem of 3d games. Always expect the player to be dumber than yourself as the game maker. Expect they try something you never expected… like alt+tabbing out of the game to take notes for a review ;)
I found the sword, took a look around to see if any enemies were close before I took it, and one was right behind me! Good jumpscare.
Excellent aesthetic and sound design. Would be nice to know how much gold is left and where its at. Great work overall!
Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad to hear you got a good jump scare out of the game. I agree that it would have been a good idea to include a gold remaining counter, or at least make it obvious that there are 240 piles of gold per level, just like in the original Pac-Man. As for a system to locate remaining gold, I couldn't figure out a system that wasn't intrusive to the minimalist design of the game.
very spooky feeling. I really wanted the ability to run. I liked how the lights gave you some indication of where the ghosts might be before they get to you.
Thanks for the feedback! There's actually a hidden mechanic where if you don't pick up a coin for 5 seconds, you start to gain speed. This is meant to represent the fact that Pac-Man moves slower when he's collecting pellets. I'm glad the spooky feeling came across.
Nice atmospheric game, interesting 3D take on the original. As 60k41p mentioned below, making the enemies glow is a big help. Well done.
Thank you for the feedback! I'm glad to hear the glowing enemies worked so well.
It is clear that lots of thought went into this as otherwise it wouldn't look, feel and play so good especially in 3D. For example, you made up nicely for all the lost area visibility due to going from top-down to first person by giving the light aura to the enemies. I liked the end result very much. Kudos!
Thank you so much for your detailed feedback! I'm glad the light aura visibility work around has been appreciated by so many people as it was my biggest design issue going into the process.
It's a really fun game, you did a great job!
Thanks!
I saw your dev process on Discord, so I was really happy to finally play the game. I really enjoyed the fantasy theme you went with awesome job!
Thanks for the feedback, and thanks for checking out the devlogs!
The graphics, music, and sound effects were amazing! I loved the twist on the game, and it felt really immersive.
Thanks for the feedback!
Cool idea! I liked it a lot is very immersive, I had a little lag playing, I don't know if its just me.
Thanks for your feedback! I will upload a lower spec version. There might be issues with the web player.
