I always like this kind of game! :)
There is some optimisation strategy, but I don't think there is any miracle technique, so in order to balance maybe you could make computer battle itself a lot of times and count the wins! You can make the computer use different strategy to test, and then even see how much thinking instead of playing random can have an effect.
Also it would be great to at least have the height in meters shown too.
Although it is a card game but it does not have too many strategy so far, all is you playing the best 3 cards with highest number (double the steal number) and end turn. What I would recommend is restrict the percentage growth and steal card, give it an condition like skip next turn or discard rest of your hands etc...
I've enjoyed it but it feels pretty unbalanced in steal characters favor. Grow focused characters feel like they either get a really good start or just lose. Which even then the steal characters can just make a comeback anyway. Where as grow characters feel like they can't really close the gap once they fall behind and if they get close it just gets stolen again.
This game has a lot of promise! I would love to see more variety of cards available. Cards to multiply the results of the previous turn, cards that add +1 to the effects of multi-stage cards. I think it would be nice to have 6 cards to select from. Maybe a card to add +1 to the number of cards you can play the next turn, stuff like that!
If a player hits the win height during their opponent's turn it shouldn't end the game until the opponent finishes their turn. Currently to actually win by Elizabeth's special ability you have to get really lucky with your card draw on the turn the opponent is at about 45' so you can get 20ish feet from one play.
just want to warn you that someone out there stole your game code and and assets and made their own spin off game called heigh duels
https://aiphotogts.itch.io/height-duel-demo-version,they literally stole everything you made and made it in to their own game spin off.
I've spoken to them before, I requested they credit my account (which I believe is still on their page). The game I have here is pretty simple, just number get bigger and it isn't exactly the most creative idea in the first place lol. If people want to create/improve upon the concept I see no harm in it. I'm very very amateur when it comes to game design so maybe others can create something more intricate. I do appreciate the heads up though still!
Eva, Ally, Elli, and Eris are clearly the most overpowered characters.
Elizabeth is kind of a meme character that forces you to do quick math and unit conversions to actually win. It's pretty funny when it works but she's otherwise a useless character. She quickly loses to size theft and her winning moves are almost entirely luck based. If I have 4 cards and I can play 3 of them that will burst the other character if I can play them all together then I lose because the instant the opponent hits their victory size I can't play my other cards and she should be the one character that gets to do that. If I wait then they pass the required height on their own and I lose anyway. If we are forcing her to play one single card to win once the opponent is close then there needs to be some kind of feedback before we play the card. If we will lose by growing the opponent then it should either say so or give a visual indication that it will do so. If we will win by playing the growth card then it should say that's a winning move. If my math is a few inches off it could mean I lose the game, and I have. Several times.
Any of the growth-focused characters are just food for theft characters, especially Eva. The only exception is Ally, who gets bonuses for being shorter. Eva starts HUGE and has no downsides AND her deck is crazy. The other theft characters don't come close, even Sasha inevitably falls behind unless she gets lucky. There are ZERO characters that improve the SHRINK mechanic. Change one of them to get 50% of lost height transferred to you or something similar. The shrink cards have nothing that boost their effect currently.
All of the other growth-focused characters need something else. There's almost no reason to pick a character like Mira. All you're doing is donating your height to a theft character.
Vixen doesn't seem to get any benefit from gambling even though it reads like she should. If she does then it's not noticeable enough. She's clearly a gamble character but her deck only uses this on coin flip cards.
Steph is pretty much useless as her deck doesn't contain nearly enough multiple trigger cards. I don't think I've ever lost to her except with Elizabeth but she's basically a beta test character and I don't count her. She needs cards that stack the number of times something triggers. She should be a snowball character that needs to be stopped before she can start looping her multiple trigger cards
Elli has resisance to theft and I feel like her deck doesn't reflect her identity. There should be cards in her deck with counters to theft and boosts to reflecting opponents' growth.
Quinn needs an additional effect if she's going to keep up with how strong Eva's deck is. Sasha probably just needs some numbers tweaked. Compare their decks with Eva and you can see the gap in power.
Eris is the only thing that hard-counters theft and her ongoing effects are not communicated to the player well enough. When I play against her I have to scan the log to see if I can shrink her or not and sometimes I still can't tell. She needs an icon above her head or near here model clearly showing what she has in play. Probably my least favorite character to play against simply because I don't know what the ongoing effect is half the time. Also, playing her froze my browser more times than any other.
And what height do characters start at??? Some of them start at 5'3 others are over 9' tall.... It's not critical information but it would be nice to know before picking.
Side note, can we credit these girls? If we are going to use their GIF's, I assume without their consent, the least we can do is credit them with a link to their socials. If that already exists then it's not obvious enough because I haven't seen it. A "Credits" page is all we need there. I would also like an option to pause their animations. Not that I don't like them bouncing around but it's a short loop and sometimes I just want my screen to stop moving.
