Seeking composer for cozy narrative indie game — open to emerging composers

Hello! I'm the creator of a small pixel art game called Ember & Thread — a cozy adventure about mending broken objects, a glowing creature companion named Pip, and the quiet power of learning to understand things differently. It's a game made with a lot of heart, and I want the music to be made the same way.

I'm especially interested in hearing from composers who are earlier in their career and looking to build their portfolio with a real shipped game, or anyone who reads this and genuinely feels something. Experience level matters less to me than care.

The sound I'm looking for

Acoustic, intimate, and warm. Think fingerpicked guitar, soft piano, kalimba, gentle strings, maybe recorder or music box. Minimal — the music breathes with the world rather than competing with it. Reference points: *Stardew Valley*, *A Short Hike*, *Spiritfarer*. If you've ever wanted to score something quiet and emotionally rich, this might be your project.

What's needed
  • 4 region ambient themes (coastal town, mushroom forest, mountain shrine, castle ruins) — each with a return/resolved variant
  • 5 core character/story themes (a warm home theme, a curious companion theme, a travel theme, a cold antagonist theme, a fragile memory theme)
  • A handful of moment-based cues — mending flourishes, emotional story beats, a unique ending chime
  • Approximately 20–30 minutes of music total

Full creative brief and Game Design Document available on request.

The project

A passion project built in Godot, made with genuine love for the people who will play it. Deliverables would be .ogg or .wav, with rights to use in the game commercially.

What I'd love to see from you
  • A portfolio link or any examples of your work — demos, student projects, personal pieces, anything
  • Your quote for the scope above
  • A few words about what draws you to this kind of project

That last one matters most. Feel free to DM or reply here. Thank you for reading — and for making beautiful things.

Hi! I'd be interested. Feel free to reach out on Discord (soundofwills) whenever you have time.

hey, I’d be interested to talk to you further about this. You can find my portfolio at www.youtube.com/@paulmichaelharrison

Hi!

Your project seems to be really cool! I really love the idea of composing music for a cozy game, which it actually sounds pretty ambitious! I can feel all the passion you're putting into Ember & Thread, and I'd be thrilled to help bring to life :D

I'm a composer (and sound designer) with a Bachelor's degree in Sound Design, and I had the opportunity of composing the entire original soundtrack for the indie game Nebelmer. Since this is my biggest project yet, I have to admit that I don’t have a ton of experience composing music for video games, but I’m extremely motivated to continue in this field and learn more! Your project sounds really great to me, and it would be an amazing opportunity and a huge pleasure for me to work with you on it. The sound palette your described is the kind of music I love to write, so I would genuinely love to work on Ember & Thread, and help you telling a story and supporting the player's experience!

You can check my Portfolio, and if you want to discuss more, feel free to contact me on Discord: malox_

Thank you very much, and I hope hearing from you soon :D

My showreel:

Hello!

I am a composer who's been looking to take on some more work to build up a portfolio/have some fun writing music.  You're project seems like a really good time!  I enjoy the games you mentioned and I would love to take on something a bit more mellow if possible.

Below is a link to my portfolio on BandCamp:

In terms of a quote, that's something I would most likely have to discuss with you depending on your budget.  Please contact whenever you can through Discord:
@thatonenerd5687

Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon!

Hi! This project genuinely sounds beautiful, and honestly the way you describe it is exactly the kind of work I love being part of. I’m a game composer focused on making music feel like a natural extension of the world and its emotional core, rather than something sitting on top of it.

A lot of my recent work has been centered around atmosphere, emotional storytelling, and character-driven themes, from cozy and introspective pieces to darker ambient work. I recently scored a narrative visual novel (Pages of Tomorrow) and a cozy puzzle game (Scriver), both very different projects, but both taught me a lot about writing with emotional intent and space.

Happy to talk more if you think I could be a good fit.

Hi! I’d love to be considered for the composer role on Ember & Thread.

I’m  a composer writing melodic, story-driven music for games, film, animation, and creator-led projects. I’m especially interested in projects where the music helps define the world, characters, and emotional memory of the experience — which sounds very aligned with the kind of cozy narrative adventure you’re describing.

My work includes JRPG-inspired themes, loopable gameplay cues, emotional short-film scoring, and motif-driven pieces built around character and place. I’m comfortable writing music that can sit under gameplay without getting in the way, but still leave the player with something memorable.

You can hear my selected works here: https://matteosablan.com

I’d be happy to talk more about the tone, scope, and musical identity you’re imagining for the game. Thanks for your time, and best of luck with the project either way!

Hello Jen000, I was looking for a project to work on over the summer and Ember and Thread sounds perfect. If you could give this a read I would really appreciate it.

I am a student who has been composing music for about half a year now, and really want to work on a project with other people.  Your project sounds amazing, and even if I am not chosen to be a part of it, I will love to see where it goes.  Some of my musical inspirations have been games like Hollow Knight, Mario Galaxy, and Journey (all amazing if you haven't had the chance to play them!).  I haven't made much music in the genre that you want, so I made a little idea demo inspired by your post ( available as the most recent post here:  https://shava.bandcamp.com/track/ember-and-thread-demo).

As for rates, I charge $20 per minute of music, but please don't let finances stop you from contacting me. I just want to work on a project. I would also love to help with sound fx, hit me up if you want a demo for that.

I am also available through email: eamonodonnell4@gmail.com, or on discord: @shava457_96122

Thanks for your consideration, Eamon O'Donnell

I'd definitely be interested. I've been making music for about 7 years in various capacities and playing piano ever since I was about 5. Always wanted to give the things I made a story and world to exist in.  My discord is chance01364 if you wanna reach out. I made something the other day that a friend of mine said remind him of castle halls which made me think I might be able to make some stuff fit for your game.

most recent thing I posted: https://soundcloud.com/chance-jones-463585632/frisbee-dog?si=da2318ca0dad4482a13...

I'd be more in it for the practice and experience and fun than a bag as well

Your Frisbee Dog song sounds awesome.  Getting sounds to layer together that well is what I'm working now most right now, also, I'm here for the same reason as you, I just want to have fun working on an interesting project :) Good luck to both of us

Hey there, I'm a new music composer too and this sounds like such a cool project to be a part of. I would love to be considered if you are still looking for a composer:)

Here are some examples of my work: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYX16tzIc9ag

I would love to read the full brief if possible. My email is alanismarie.edwards@gmail.com

Have a great week :)

Hi, I'm a new composer. If you're still looking for a musician, I would love to work on this project!

Here's a demo reel:
https://play.reelcrafter.com/6MwFR4GKT6m6J6iinj3BaQ (Specifically, White Hum is what would fit your project best.)

And a couple guitar songs on my Bandcamp that sound like a great fit:
https://timelessinterval.bandcamp.com/track/shaking-of-the-climbing-vines
https://timelessinterval.bandcamp.com/track/the-earth-turns-to-face-the-sun
https://timelessinterval.bandcamp.com/track/hourglass

As for a quote, I could do this for $40 per minute, or around $800-$1200 for 20-30 minutes of music. At that price, I can do the flourishes and extras for free.

I love making relaxing ambient music. Can easily incorporate all the instruments you mentioned in the post. Absolutely love Stardew Valley and A Short Hike! I'm very drawn to games that allow the player to relax and breathe, and give a sense of satisfaction in their work. That kind of game has been a huge comfort to me personally in my life. This sounds right up my alley, and I'm very interested in hearing more about the game!

Please DM here or on Discord (foogriffy), or email me at timelessinterval@gmail.com if you're still looking for a musician!

Hey there,

Ember & Thread sounds like a beautiful project. I’m an ambient composer releasing music as Still Fades, and I also run SoundGhost, where I create sample libraries and instruments focused on atmosphere and emotion.

Game composition is something I’m looking to move into as a new venture, although I’ve spent years creating music, loops, and sound design that are built to evolve naturally over time and create an emotional response from the listener. The themes you mentioned, quiet moments, memories, and companionship etc, really resonate with me.

I’d love the opportunity to contribute to a project with so much heart and learn more about the world you’re building.

You can hear some of my work here:

Feel free to get in touch so we can chat some more.

Thanks,

Josh / Still Fades

Hi! I’m Stéphane, a composer and artist from France. I’d love to work on Ember & Thread — the emotional and intimate direction really speaks to me.I think I have what you need (acoustique emotional guitare, ambiant guitare électrique, piano/synth emotional) :)

I have demos I can send privately if you’re still looking for a composer!

Thanks, Stéphane

Hi Jen! I know this post has been open for a while, but I’d love to be considered if you’re still looking for a composer.

The intimate, emotional direction of Ember & Thread really interests me—especially the idea of giving each region and character a recognizable musical identity while leaving enough space for the world to breathe.

My preliminary rate would be $20 per finished minute, placing 20–30 minutes around $400–$600, depending on the number of revisions and how the resolved variants are structured. I’d be happy to review the creative brief before confirming a final quote.

Hi Jen,

I realise this post has been open for a while, but I’d love to be considered if you are still looking for a composer.

I’m Ilko Birov, a Bulgarian composer, songwriter, and music producer working across games, film, and theatre. The idea of a game centred on mending, understanding, and quiet emotional change genuinely speaks to me. I was particularly drawn to the fragile-memory theme and the possibility of giving each region and character a distinct musical identity while leaving enough space for the world to breathe.

My most relevant pieces include The Bellmaker’s Morning, Beyond the Hawthorn Gate, and Revisiting the Old Town. You can hear them here:

https://ilko-birov-composer.imaginariumnil.chatgpt.site/

My preliminary rate would be $200 USD per finished minute, placing 20–30 minutes at approximately $4,000–$6,000. That would include composition, arrangement, production, mixing and mastering, loop preparation, WAV or OGG delivery, and two reasonable revision rounds per primary theme. I would review the creative brief and the structure of the resolved variants before confirming a final quotation.

If the position remains open and you feel my work may suit Ember & Thread, I’d be very happy to read the creative brief and learn more about the project. If you have already selected a composer, I wish you and the game every success.

Best, Ilko
