My favourite part is the bush man waves at me when I buy something and leave. lol

Maybe this is me-only issue but I didn't have any sound. Otherwise, it was a cute little game!

Developer(+1)

Haha yeah glad you liked it, that was such a last minute addition, we wanted to add so much more feel and juice but got we had to stop to meet the deadline, same for sound design, we cut it out for the Jam unfortunatenly

Very entertaining game. The design of the snails was really cute. The game perfectly shows that not every game needs to look realistic—sometimes just drawing a cute face is enough. I even got quite hooked on the horse racing… uh, snail racing.

Developer(+1)

Absolutely ! I personally love Sylized games, they feel more immersive and fantastic to me! Glad you liked it

Submitted

Super fun game! The snails are so cute, and their face expression changes when charging is hilarious. The upgrades are intuitive too!

Developer

Thanks, I'm glad that you had fun playing the game, it means a lot!

Submitted

Awesome game! Loved the art style, especially the snails and their expressions and facial graphics, and even various shells. Amazing modelling and animation work too.

Developer

Thank you so much ! All the 3D Modeling and Animations were made by darkbean! Glad you enjoyed their hard work

Submitted(+1)

The Snails look adorable! I love different the facial expression they make. I did share this with some of my friends.

Developer

Thank you so much ! That means a lot, I'm happy to hear you though it was worthy of sharing !

Submitted

Really fun, a great charming time. The snail expressions, the animation work and the setting are all really well done. Also the amount of asset work is very amazing for 2 people in just a week, so this is very impressive, nice submission!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much ! Yeah we put a lot of effort and time into trying to bring the vision to life ! We surprised ourselves meeting the deadline because this wasn't even the original idea we had started designing !

Submitted

I really enjoyed my time with my snail Alberto, really good job with the entry very fun! :D

Developer

Haha thank you ! It's always fun for us to see all the names people chose for their snails! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

Submitted

Great overall aesthetics.  Great modelling work. Fun!

Developer

Thanks ! All the level design and models/animations were made by darkbean, I'm glad you liked them !

My boy Chester was a speed demon by the end

Developer (1 edit)

Chester, my man! Glad you enjoyed the game, I'll keep an eye out for him on the track!

Played this for such a long time, made a "late-surger" build focusing primarily on stamina. Super fun and I felt very maternal for the snails especially the doped-up/goopy ones. I also had performance issues but I'll try downloading the windows build and see if that helps!

Developer

Happy to hear that you were engaged with the game ! I'm sorry to hear that you encountered performance issues though, definitely give the Native Windows PC build a try, but otherwise I'd be very interested in getting some information about your configuration and browser to debug this and learn more about Godot optimization !

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

This was a fun entry! The level of detail.. the expressions on the snails' faces as they struggled, the different type shells (one of them had a Rubik's cube lol), the cheering ants, and the Jumbotron showing 1st place were all very thoughtfully done. I felt this could've been a game released on the Wii. Some sound and bgm would've made this game top notch... Good job!!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much, I'm glad you had fun and appreciated all the little things we added to the game. Indeed, sadly, we had to cut sound design to meet the deadline. It was my first GWJ, we live, we learn, we'll plan for the better next time!

Submitted

Impressed this was your first GWJ (this is my second) Looking forward to seeing your future projects!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Yeah first GWJ but I have done 3-4 Jams in the past, and I have some experience on Unity mostly. I'll try to not disappoint ! haha

The video screen is a super cool idea, adds a lot. Had issues with performance though (my laptop is quite old, might be me). Overall pretty solid, well done!

Developer(+1)

Thank you ! I'm sorry you encountered performance Issues, there's definitely some added strain from being a 3D Game, and the Jumbotron adds at least a second active Camera. We did provide a Native Windows PC build also on the page, which should have better performances!

Really appreciate you giving it a try nonetheless !

Submitted

Very fun concept and gameloop, I love the idea of passively watching your little snail race, while also having free-form movement to walk around as it happens. The video screen was a really nice touch, and lots of great little snail faces and shells to unlock made me want to keep racing, winning, buying and repeat.

Really fun entry, great work!

Developer

Thank you so much ! Yeah we really wanted to give the player freedom of movement, though we did have plans to add way more world interactions to keep you busy, but were benched due to time constraints.

The Jumbotron was a fun feature to put in place, and we put effort to have useful dynamic cameras with it too !

I'm glad you enjoyed playing the game !

A fun racing game. I particularly like the snail animations. It’s great that there are upgrades, but I’d like the races itself to be a bit more varied. Despite that, a lot of work has gone into the game. Well done :)

Developer(+1)

Hey thanks ! Yeah we had ideas to implement things like Track modifiers / environmental effects (like a puddle of water to cross), as well as some player interactions to contribute to the race, but we weren't able to fit these features in for the Deadline, a lot of things weren't done and we focused on the main core loop!

Glad you had fun!

Submitted(+1)

I love the snail models and animations. Some sound effects would be nice. Good job overall. I'm curious how did you make that TV screen?

Developer(+1)

Awh thank you ! All the Faces, 3D Models and 3D Animations were made by darkbean, we absoltely would have loved to be able to find the time to do some Sound Design, unfortunately, we got a bit starved on time and IRL responsibilities, so we focused on the core loop first !

So the Jumbotron is actually a "pretty simple" setup:

  1. We have the Camera: where we use a SubViewport Node which I add a Child Camera3D to, so it auto-renders the Camera's output to the SubViewport
  2. We have the Screen: where we use a MeshInstance3D Node using the default Godot Quad Mesh to make a flat surface, and we set the Surface Material > Albedo > Texture to SubViewport Type, and give it the SubViewport we just created above

So that's really it for the core setup, then all the transitions and changes are managed by a RaceCameraDirector, which does all the decision making with timers, and rules, and signals to decide in what state the Camera should be, a simple Array[Node3D] containes the positions the Camera should have for each state, like OverHead rotating 360 above the entire game field, or the Racer Cameras, which are Node3D's on the Snails themselves it follows etc...

Submitted(+2)

At first I was like "I'm not even doing anything during the race, boring!", but then 20 minutes later I was still buying upgrades like crazy to make my snail (Bob) the best sprinter ever. It's cute, it's funny, it's well made: good job!

Developer(+1)

You got caught in the Snail Craze haha!

We tried our best with balance to provide high tension races, and leave the player at the edge of their seat until the finish line! And we agree, we wanted to add so much more that the player could do or interact either in silly ways or gameplay affecting ways, but that was just too much feature creep for a 2 man team with the time we could pour in unfortunately, so we kept things tight to the core loop !

Happy to hear you enjoyed it and thank you !

Submitted

You really did it, I was on the edge of my seat for many many races, which made the few (maybe only one) races were my snail was obviously ahead all the more satisfying! You did the right choice to focus on the core loop, it really shows.

Drugging my off pink colored snail "penis" was without a doubt an exhilarating experience. Super cute game!

Developer (2 edits)

Awhh thanks @penis_music! I'm really glad you had fun with your snail !

Submitted

the game is good but..
the game is -1 fps

Developer (1 edit)

Hey Thanks, though, that is surprising, I'm sorry to hear you had issues, if you're looking to troubleshoot, I would say to check that your Internet Browser has GPU ACCELERATION : Enabled, because without it, the game will be rendered with the CPU, which will slow it down considerably, otherwise, you can also try it on the Native Windows PC build or on another browser

Submitted

it is also low fps on the desktop becuase of the grass i think

Developer(+1)

That would be surprising, the grass is entirely shader animated and pushed inside a Godot MultiMesh, making us able to render it in a single draw call, and our map being roughly 15x15 Godot units, there just isn't much geometry to compute. The game even runs on my phone from 2020 at 12 FPS,

We've also got others who have been praising the performance, so it is pretty confusing.  Do you mind me asking what grade of Hardware you are using ? I'd love to be able to find possible causes and reasonable fixes for anyone trying to play, or learn something about optimization!

Submitted(+2)

My snail was SnailyJim and I was invested in his doping/racing career like nothing else. Good work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks ! And don't worry, we won't talk about SnailyJim's doping usage. Mouth zipped

Submitted(+1)

The game is fun and I like the look of the snails. However my computer can't really handle the game, so it is very slow. I wish it was faster because I wanted to keep playing but it was to slow.

Developer

Hey ! Thanks for trying out the game, I'm sorry to hear that you had issues with the game running ? We've actually heard people have quite a different experience with the performance. Hopefully this could help you troubleshoot, but, make sure you have GPU Acceleration enabled for you Browser, otherwise the game will run on your CPU and probably badly yeah, otherwise you can try the Windows PC build instead of the web version, at the bottom of the page, or try on another Web Browser maybe ? I hope things work out for you, thanks again for giving it a try, and we welcome you to tell us if you ever manage to fix the performance issues !
