This is a really polished game and I'd like to see where it goes in the future. I liked having to choose words that keep up the news company's reputation and avoiding already used words felt like a natural difficulty curve. The only things I would consider adding are more word options and consequences of your titles (eg. after every few newspapers, the titles you sent can be seen on some newspapers that come up on the screen). Other than that, this is a great game!
Appreciate the feedback so much! I’d considered having some “consequence” like that, showing reactions to the headlines you make, but it was more of a time constraint. I’m glad you still enjoyed it though, thank you for playing <3
Thank you for playing and the feedback!! There was someone else that mentioned being able to see the titles on newspapers and it's definitely a great idea. Glad you enjoyed it.
I had a lot of fun with this one. Just wish there were more words to play with, or maybe less actually. Something to shake things up because, as fun as it was, it was a bit easy in my opinion, and it got repetitive. But I understand it was due to time constraints. With a little more polish, I can definitely see myself spending hours trying to come up with the perfect combination of words. Great job.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it despite the flaws. Yeah, a little extra twist (spin?) was something I really wanted cause I knew the core gameplay on its own was “eh”. I ended up breaking up the monotony with dialogue (new dialogue whenever you press the intercom button for each headline) so there was at least some narrative to keep you occupied 😅
But yes, thank you <3
Great game! But I wonder how did you scipt it to know when it is right and when not to put a world?
Headlines and words are both resources that have ‘tags’. If they share a tag they’re relevant. Though there was a lot of handpicking exceptions (to remove and add words to a headline regardless of tags).
It was a bit messy, but it worked well enough xD
This was pretty fun! The incidents were quite amusing and it was a blast trying to figure out what combination of words would work for different headlines. I think what would make this better maybe is if the list of words would rotate rather than just having the same set every time, but I also think the idea of avoiding reusing words also adds a fun challenge to the game. Good job!
Thank you for playing! Yeah, some extra dynamics like that I’d considered, randomizing word sets or having upgrades, but ran out of time to do it right. Glad you liked it tho :)
This is one of the coolest ideas I've seen so far.
The concept is really interesting and incredibly well executed. Also, and I don't know if it was done on purpouse, this game reminds me a lot of another JuniperDev game, The Simpler Times, wich has a similar mechanic.
The only thing I can "complain" about is maybe the theme is a bit ambiguous and not really spin-related, but that's just my opinion. Also it'd be cool if you could somehow see your headlines inside the newspaper or something like that or (as I've seen someone suggest before me) some sort of reaction so you can visually see how good you headline was.
Overall, a super cool game, great music and sound effects, really polished and so fun to play (also I loved the Spiderman references), one of the best ones I've seen.
Edit: Oh, and btw I didn't think of it, but about the theme, it really matches the secondary theme, seriousness.
Newspapers are probably the most serious thing in this world. (Even more if you boss is J. Jonah Jameson...)
Thank you for playing the game back! I haven't seen that game, but I'll follow up with the game dev (edit: followed up, they hadn't seen it either!). This was my first Juniper jam, but I guess you can only be so different. The spin mechanic was just a different take on it, though we didn't have time to show the spin. I can see, however, it is a bit ambiguous. Seeing headlines inside of the newspaper is a great suggestion! Thank you again! We love Spiderman as well, but it is definitely not affiliated. @@
Great idea for a game, my wife and I had fun coming up with headlines together to match the story. Would be cool if it showed you all your headlines at the end, maybe with some sort of reaction to the headline from the public? Idea for if you had more time than just a week perhaps. Visuals and sound effects were great and fitted in with the game setting.
That is a great suggestion. Thank you for playing and we're really happy to hear you and yours had fun!!
What a s(erious)illy game! I thoroughly enjoyed all of the jokes and was pleasantly surprised when a word I chose that I assumed had nothing to do with the headline was super relevant lol! I wish I realized sooner that you can hear what Mr. Bohn Bonah Bameson Bunior thinks of the original headline because he had some very funny anecdotes. I must ask, did you write all of these headlines yourself? They were very creative and gave me some good giggles! Anyways, I shall take my 193 score and become a professional spinner. B)
Bohn Bonah Bameson Bunior 😭 I love it, tysm for playing and I’m really glad you enjoyed it, especially my silly jokes xD
I’ll admit I had some help with some headlines using a randomizer for inspiration, but they were all my work in the end ^^ I did especially enjoy writing all the various dialogue, I don’t usually have dialogue/story in my games so it was fun to explore.
193 is a great score btw! You make a great spinner :) Cheers!
We have similar takes on the theme, great Spider-Man references, as well as art and sound
Really clever take on the theme! I never would've come up with this myself. Some of the headlines I made were hilarious! I also really enjoyed the art. Well done
spinning the truth for attractive headlines, pretty lengthy but fun. next time i will try to get the MENACE
The game was great ! The artstyle really caught my eye and I was very intrigued with the idea. However, at some point I just started guessing because stuff that made sense to me didn't make sense to the game :/ or maybe I misunderstood. Still, I had a lot of fun and took my job veryyy seriously at the start of the game haha
Thanks for playing! Yeah the system isn’t perfect and kind of arbitrary sometimes, definitely not your fault. Glad you still had some fun! It is of course a very serious game so it’s good you took it seriously 🙂↕️🙂↕️
That's an incredibly clever title for your game :P
You really nail that newsroom style, and the Spider-Man references and JJ's animations are awesome! I had a lot of fun tinkering with the titles... the mechanics are implemented really well, and it's just a great game!
I’m very original I know xD
I’m so glad you enjoyed it and liked the vibe <3 it’s high praise after playing yours!
I love the J. Jonah Jameson parody! The game's a lot of fun and it's cool that we thought of the same theme but implemented it really differently!
Thank you! I’m glad you liked it, fellow Doctor ;P
This is a great take on spin! The most unique i've played for sure. Visually it looks spot on. Audio was great, the typewriter sounds were very fitting, the music is a long enough loop that you don't quickly get bored of it, but since I took a long time trying to figure out what words to put together, eventually the bg music DID get a little much of the same jingle. Personally I think a little quietness included in the loop can go a long way to not wear out a player audibly.
In terms of enjoyment, while I loved the spin (hah) and the core game play, it wasn't easy to figure out what good words to put together with such a limited choice. Sometimes I thought of titles but the word options just weren't there which meant I had to read every word every time to figure out what I could possibly do. Now taking into considering this is a game jam game, I can very much understand that's not easy to finetune in 7 days all the word options, connections, and scoring.. at least I assume that was not a simple task. An idea would be to have a smaller world library per round so that there is less reading every round, or a bigger shared library of words so it's easier on the player--then again wanting there to be a certain difficulty is definitely a fair choice to make.
Good game, my brain is now tired.
I really appreciate the detailed feedback <3 yes! It wasn’t the easiest system with so many possible combinations, but could have used some fine tuning for sure. Definitely a time limitation.
Learned a lotta lessons, music being one of them. I think I should’ve put in some more tracks tbh. But thanks for playing! I’m glad you enjoyed it and hope your head feels better 😅💚
Thank you so much for playing and well-detailed feedback! Audibly that is understandable. We did have a composer planned, but they were busy, though there is a setting to adjust or mute the audio which was very needed for me. It helped with concentrating because there was a bit of reading. We did toy with the word selection and tried to figure out a good variety and amount. Although, it certainly won't be perfect for the amount of time. It also took some time to figure out where to go with this idea so eventually time ran out. Thank you again! Hope your brain isn't too tired!!
Took a while to understand where the "spin" aspect was lol. This is fun! I think the amount and choice of words were great. Would've loved "levels" or "tiers" to reach after certain points to add to the sense of progression. Other than that, no notes! Lovely art, audio, and feel
A form of progression was definitely a stretch goal! Thank you so much for playing!
Lovely way of going about the theme! I wish that DAMN Menace showed its face but oh well, can't win them all. Jokes aside, I would have liked to know a little more precisely how each word was chosen as relevant or not and how they impacted the score. Maybe a future update where you can purchase new words to use and clear the debuff off of others would add for a bit more replayability.
I soo wanted something extra like you’re suggesting. Buying or even spinning for random words or yeah clearing debuffs but I was running out of time.
Relevancy was a mix between tags and handpicked for a given headline. A goose headline might have the “animal” tag and individual words are tagged appropriately so if they match it’s relevant. It’s not the best system lol but it saved time.
Thank you for playing tho! I’m glad you enjoyed it <3
Interesting entry!!
Enjoyment: 3/5
The main idea is very cool, but trying to understand what words to use in what situation kind of gave me an headache, I couldn't really manage to get that high of a score, but it was interesting nonetheless.
Creativity and Theme: 5/5
Very creative use of the theme and I love the overall vibe the game goes for! :D Reminds me a lot of Job Job from The Jackbox Party games, except it's serious instead of silly.
Visuals: 4/5
Visuals look pretty nice, I just wish there was a little bit more going on, maybe give the guy speaking some more sprite variations? Still very good!
Audio: 5/5
The audio works well, I have no complaints.
Seriousness: 5/5
Indeed very serious.
FINAL RATING: 4/5
The idea is very cool and unique, I just wish i could've understood which words to use in which situations a bit more lmao. But I liked this entry's charm overall! :D
Totally fair review, thanks for taking the time! I’m glad the “party game” vibe came through, jackbox and card against humanity were my initial inspirations, just making silly sentences out of individual prompts. Glad you enjoyed it ^^
Super fun! usually I'm not a big word puzzle game player but the way you transformed the genre was really enjoyable. I hope to see you continue developing and maybe releasing this as a steam/app store game at some point.
This was really fun to play - the mechanic of piecing together different headlines from choice words, having to strategically choose what words to use and where in case they came up again later, it was genuinely really fun.
The interactions felt snappy and clean, and the game felt really well polished. A cool little word puzzle game under the hood, skinned and presented with a rather hilarious theme. Before I realized it, I'd gotten to the end, and I still wanted another headline to spin.
Now I need to go take some photos of that Menace.
I love this comment so much, such high praise! tysm for playing it all the way through, and I’m so happy you enjoyed it <3
Awesome game and really unique concept! I was hooked because I wanted to see the next silly headline, and all of them were hilarious. The UI design is also intuitive and responsive. Excellent job on this!
It makes me so happy when people play it to the end <3 tysm!! Doubly so if I could make someone laugh. Ty for playing!
