I love turn-based games! loved the entry! gg!

Submitted

I really love the art in this game! And the whole concept, this game is very fun (:

Submitted

I really like this! The art style is so nice, the music and sound effects are great, and the game feels really cohesive and well thought out! My only criticism is that I wish the tutorial explained a little bit more about what each character did, but I figured it out well enough on my own.

Submitted

I love the vibe of this game, dungeon crawler is one of the best genres when it comes to retro. You really nailed it and I loved the visuals!

Really impressive what you managed to put together here! The overall sound design and art is very cohesive. The mean feedback I have is that I think the indicator for turn and indicator for character being selected could have been separate to allow for you to manage items and check character stats more fluidly.
Great work though!

Developer(+1)

Not mean at all, thank you for the feedback! Totally fair too, I think making it easier to switch between characters would also make it easier to strategize because you could quickly bounce around to compare each one's strengths and weaknesses against the others.

Thanks again for the feedback, and thanks for playing!

Oh gosh! I meant "main"!!! Must have just made a typo XD

Also as a punk anarchist I especially enjoyed the art and such. Always love seeing cool rep. Meant to say this in my original comment but must have forgotten :3

Developer

haha, "main" makes way more sense!

Wow, thank you that's high praise from someone living the lifestyle. A lot of the art is just kinda playful or even goofy, but I really did enjoy learning more about punk ideologies and tried to come up with a few enemies that are the antithesis of that. (i.e. sellouts, corporate ppl, elitists). Hopefully it wasn't corny or cheesy!

Loved the aesthetic! I've always wanted to make an RPG battler... you've definitely given me some inspiration! I liked the different abilities and attacks, having 4 characters with different jobs and stats, the battle music was fun, great job over all!

The layout and graphics reminds me of old point and click games. Honestly I just spammed attack most of the time but I seemed to get softlocked at stage 3 where no enemies appeared. I like the aesthetics and audio were very faithful to the theme.

Developer(+1)

Sorry, it's not super clear but I think the softlock you're describing is actually the spot where you need to click the "enter door" looking button instead of the Go button.

After 3 rounds you get to enter the door at the end of the alley and rest up (get healed). Then you do it all over again, with tougher enemies!

Submitted(+1)

This makes me nostalgic. I like that you can equip items. NIce retro feel!

Submitted(+1)

I like the style and sound. Retro all the way! Lasted 5 battles!

Submitted

That was really interesting!

Submitted(+1)

I absolutely  love the setting and the graphics. It reminded me some old school grid based rpg.  A very fun game! Well done!

Submitted(+1)

Wow a lot going on here.
The graphics and sound were great retro feel and really fit the theme well.

I did two play throughs - only made it to two battles on first try (had no idea what I was doing)

second try I made it through 7 last one was super hard, I had "bandage" on the second run and that helped a lot

some more information about what specials do would be nice as would a easy way to swap equipment, but overall very ambitious game that plays it off well, thanks for submitting

Developer

thanks for playing!! the ability descriptions are all listed in the Game Manual section on the itch page under the game. if you got to 7 without reading that you are a legend

Submitted(+1)

Nice style and music. Enjoyed it!

Submitted(+1)

I loved the art and the style, the game just oozes with it, top notch. I would have loved to have tooltips or some other way to figure out what the various buttons did in game.

Submitted(+1)

I love that you played into the retro theme twice -- it's a retro game genre with the old school Wizardry style dungeon crawler, and also retro with the 80s punk aesthetic!

It would have been nice to be able to inspect what actions did (maybe a tooltip on hover?) and also item stats in the same way. Other than that, this is great.

Submitted(+1)

That was fun! Once I got into the inventory system and read what the special moves do I was into it.

If your inventory is full and you get new items, they are gone!  I found a tommy gun and was excited to use it, but my backpack was full so I guess the team just threw it on the ground! Why would you do that, Bobby/Iggy/Wren/Morgan?!

Great style and fun game.  Good jam.

Developer

Sorry about that, they really don't know whats good for them. We ran out of time anyway but I didn't even think to fix that because my inventory never got full while testing!! Gotta make sure to always bring a teammate with the Eat ability i guess haha

Submitted

Love the aesthetic, fits the theme really well.
very fun game!

Wow. What an entry! Usually I list everything I liked, but I think I'd be here for a while! Amazing game; if this was on steam for a few bucks I wouldn't bat an eye. Its very very well made. I had a few (very minor) suggestions:

  • I found myself swapping items a lot to see if they'd improve my character's build or not. It would be nice to have some way of seeing the difference between 2 items without manually switching between them (e.g., some pluses and minuses next to the current stats that appear when hovering over a new item)
  • After a while I ran out of inventory space and I don't think the things I was picking up were available for me to use anymore, and I didn't see a way of throwing away items from my inventory to clear up space
  • IMO the "GO" and "open door" buttons are off-by-one at the end of each level: you press "open door" to go up to but not through the door, but then "GO" to actually pass through the door (this is the most tiny nitpick ever, but it took me a tad to understand which button to press). TBH you could just use one button
  • The shield button isn't in the manual (I assume its +50 defence?)

I managed to get through 15 battles before my brethren fell :( This is one of the best game jam games I've ever played! I love it. I would be super excited to see where this project goes!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much! This is really great feedback!

Your idea about having plus or minus x when hovering items is a great idea!! I would definitely implement that after the jam if we can continue development!

Yes the inventory thing is a problem. I never filled up the inventory in my playtesting even when using Steal BUT that wasn't much playtesting. actually i was implementing features until like 30 minutes before the deadline (thats why the mute music button doesnt work oops).

You are right about the movement buttons for sure. it could have just been move forward. originally we were talking about  a slightly different design where those would have made more sense. right now the only purpose having two buttons instead of one has is to prevent people from unintentionally button mashing through the healing zone.

The shield is +50 defense!! Yeah that could be written down somewhere. lack of information is the biggest complaint for this game it seems but i do think it adds to the retro feel having to try to figure things out for yourself.

15 is a really great score. My highest is 16 and as far as i know thats the record right now! I'm really glad you appreciate the game as much as I do. I've been coming back and playing runs myself to see whats the best team composition/item build combos I can do but i keep dying at the 17th fight. We'll definitely let you know if we update after the jam and thanks so much again for the feedback :)

Submitted

Very retro. Even as someone who usually does not like these kind of games it was quite good! Great art style and extremely unique/consistent. Good job!

Submitted(+1)

So far my favorite game of the jam. The art and the music are incredible. I gave it a couple of runs and I could keep going.

Developer(+1)

thank you so much!! :)
