A bit hard to get the hang of at the start, but really fun to ply once you get it. The gameplay is very well-made, and can be expanded upon in the future. The visuals are also good. I would advice to add some sound effects next time. Very enjoyable.

Developer

I’d say that’s because I didn’t include usage instruction and/or tutorials. Will improve in the future.

I'd love to play your game when it's ready. You managed to tell a story without using a single word. I was able to figure out the controls without any instructions, and the game made me feel what the character was feeling. That is really impressive and rare. Please keep developing it—I can't wait to see where it goes!

I really liked the smoke and explosion animations.

I think it would be helpful to explain in the description how to access the flipping minigame and mention that the pot was removed. Having to search through the comments for that information is not ideal.

The failing the flipping animations looked great and gave the game a lot of character.

Developer

Thanks for your suggestion. It’s probably for the best I block out some time to properly document my future jam entries moving forward.

What if the game had a sound effect where if you overcook the food, a sound effect of Gordon Ramsay blasts in and says "IT'S RAW" XD
Overall, the premise was super cool! I think you could've definitely refined it further if you had more time, but you also made a lot of assets yourself, especially as a solo dev as it seems like, so lots of kudos to you! Here's some detailed analysis points that I have personally...

Creativity

The idea of managing multiple different pans at a time with different timers is a very unique mechanic, along with the timing mechanic required to successfully flip the pan! I think the idea of also having food and water to manage was also really cool, especially if you're trying to manage the pans at the same time. Using the cooking mechanics to manage a kitchen-like atmosphere could also be really cool. I think some cool ideas that you could try out is to have specific recipes and step-by-step processes to make specific foods. For example, if you are trying to make a soup, you first have to cook the mushroom, then use water, then flip the pan. Experimenting with different types of pans that you get from upgrading your pans and having longer timers on them could also be really cool!

Enjoyment

If you do decide to come back to this game, I would love to see how it evolves because the mechanics of managing different pans along with different ingredients at the same time could be refined further to make a great game! I think you could really push the multi-tasking a lot with this type of game, and for players like me who love the timer pressure of these games, you could really push for an experience that is slower for casuals and faster for competitive people. What if you did an esport on this LMAO that would be pretty funny.

Narrative

I see that you have a nice cozy background for your game - maybe you could make it like a spice-of-life anime where you could have your protagonist managing a restaurant in a highly competitive, esports dominated city, or a romance story where you are cooking up something for your partner. I would love to hear what your favorite stories are in media and maybe you could take some inspiration from them, especially the cozy ones. Maybe you could have a competitive gameplay experience with a casual, cozy story

Artwork

Considering you're a solo dev and you made all the assets yourself, that's very impressive! All of the items, pans, and water look really cool, especially the animation of the water cup! I'm very impressed you managed to make that all yourself - not that many people can do that all by themselves. If you were to just have a little more time, I think you could very easily make a unique art style that is yours that no one else can copy!

Audio

Depending on the tone of the game, maybe you could have a lot of goofy sound effects when the pans explode, like the Roblox explosion sound XD or like a cozy sounding water faucet dripping from the dispenser - you just have to decide what kind of tone you want for the game. Do you want to make something more serious, cozy, relaxing? It's up to you!

Overall, with the abilities you have as a solo dev, I think you can have a much better shot at next year now that you have learned more on this experience! Keep it up, your art style is awesome for one person!

Tks for your encouragement and replies, just wanna address your suggestions:

  • Audio is non-existent for now, since I do not have enough time for that (poor time budgetting + last minute bug unfortunately). Though Gordon Ramsay screaming “it’s raw” sounds like a good idea.

  • As for the ingredients - these are meant for the pot, but I had to disable that part last-minute due to some scoring bug. Would be good if I can come back to this project in the near future (I’m not majoring in, or planning to do game dev after graduation, so it’s kinda tertiary priority).

  • Esport eh? Lowkey thought about slapping a leaderboard of sort, but again, didn’t get myself to do that in time.

  • As for the sprites, I pulled those off using Pixelorama. Pretty good open-source sprite editor, but took a while to grasp. Would recommend.

Again, tks.

P/S Definitely would come back to GMTK 2027 - this is so fun to skip on.

I’m glad you’re down to do another game jam! I think you could get a leaderboard on there in time ;)

I am an expert Cook, Serve, Delicious! player, so I appreciated the theme. That said, the mini game was punishing with the click ranges, and it felt random when would the green range be longer. Also, I did not get the role of the water machine and whether I should put away the vegetables and fruits falling from the sky. Maybe a shoer onboarding experience can improve the game later. Congrats for the submission!

Developer

Yup, thanks for your suggestion.

  • Yeah, the random green zone is a design oversight, since I don’t play much cooking games to understand what it shall be done. A progressively shrinking one might’ve done the job better.

  • The water machine, as I addressed above, was for the pot, but had to be disabled last-minute due to some bugs I couldn’t fix in time.
