Not too crazy but a neat take on the metroidvania format. It's cool how the upgrades switch around every attempt but with only 3 upgrades total there's not really much variety. Everyone's already mentioned the lack of QoL platformer features, so I'll point out that I don't think being able to aim the big gun was mentioned anywhere?
For being made in 24 hours this is a pretty solid game. Good job!
Cool concept ! Interesting take on the metroidvania genre.
The moving grid background was distracting, it could be less present for level clarity.
the randomised powers and challenge to get all 3 was fun! some QoL for platformers (namely coyote time) would be useful but otherwise fun to play.
Very well put together I must say. Though it could use input buffering and coyote time. I don't think there's enough time to get all three abilities and win, though maybe I'm slow. I beat it with two.
The abilities don't properly reset when you press try again. It's like the game forgets which ability is the first one.
The background shader is a bit busy. Maybe slowing it down could fix it?
All around good! Great job.
Thanks for the feedback.
Input buffering and coyote time are things I definitely would've considered adding had I spent more time on this. I made the idea within the first day of the jam but did very little work on it until the last 24 hours, within which time I made just about the whole game.
I get what you mean about the background. I think aside from just slowing it down, an option to disable the scroll effect entirely would've been good to add.
It's 100% possible to get all three abilities in one go, and with some ability location combinations it is required. Though, it is tougher to do then if you're able to get by with only 2.
Could you elaborate on what you mean by abilities not resetting? Not sure what you're referring to there.
when I ran out of time, and reset, where the gun was I would pick up the gun ability (on the left) it would give me the double jump. It’s only just now occurring to me that the abilities might shuffle each time.
Oh yeah, that's intentional. Upgrade locations are randomized on each run. I added that feature because I figured the extra variety would go well with the game's structure, though I didn't really convey the existence of it at all in-game.
unbelievably satisfying to beat this after 10 attempts
So firstly i found a couple bugs like the up shot not working and dash not making me dash, Secondly this game desperately needs jump and input buffers and maybe relax a bit on the sound effects and whats these controls like A for for jump ?? let me use up or space the key placements honestly feel weird and add unnecessary challenge to the game
Could you elaborate on your comment about the sound effects? I'm not really sure what you mean by that.
its annoying thats all
Good idea, had me retry a few times before I could win. Would have loved to see even more abilities. Great job!
Pretty neat. The randomized upgrades are a cool idea, though I ended up getting the same roll twice in a row including on my successful run (which I suppose with only 6 possible arrangements that's bound to happen every so often if it isn't specifically prevented, but it put a damper on the variety the mechanic otherwise would've added). Level design is pretty clever to accommodate the randomization and keep things just barely doable within the time limit. Otherwise not a lot to be said about this.
I noticed the lack of variety while testing. Would've definitely added more abilities had I not procrastinated on working on the game for most of the jam.
Maybe it would've been worth looking into a bag randomizer or even just a manual check to prevent the same permutation from showing up twice in a row - would've ensured a bit more variety without needing to implement another ability. Though adding a couple more abilities would've fixed the issue pretty quickly too, yeah.
Nice game! collecting all three is a tricky thing it seems :D
Simple but elegant and fun, the randomness of powerups and different routes adds to the replayability
p.s. my record is 6 seconds left
Art wise remind me a lot of that one old nokia game (I think it's called Bounce?)
Really nice overall, keep up the good work!
This is sick! Awesome abilities, they felt amazing to use!
Game Jam Metroidvanias are pretty hard, we made one too, check it out.
The Clockmaster.
Level design was very well crafted as it allows you to complete the game no matter what order of powerups you get. I found the background a bit distracting and in the end beating the game was a matter of memorizing level layout, but nice little game nonetheless.
