What was your goal for the project this month?
I wanted to share my ideas and show that accessible games can be fun and competitive for players who may not be able to see the screen. Hopefully, this project inspires others to take these ideas further and create even more accessible games for blind and visually impaired players.

What type of project was this?

New Project!

Great job on the submission - I really enjoy having games that have a single button like you do here, because it means that you don't have to mentally remember a bunch of different hot keys / controls. So many games can be challenging just because you have to remember everything you need to press to get the information or state of the game.

I do think the instructions were a bit abstract, and I definitely triggered a 2 player setup on my first run unintentionally. The absence of extra buttons definitely has their drawbacks, and I've hit a bunch of them first-hand as well, so I can understand the design challenge here.  I'm not sure what the best way to solve it would be, but potentially an announcement when changing player 1 or player 2's set up would be good? 🤔

I think, it was slightly hard to get a sense of the total track length and could have been cool to have some starting affordance there (a set number of ticks you hear before starting). I think some score goals for single player would be also super neat!

Again, great job on the submission! I hope other games strive for this sort of simple and flexible interface in future jams!

Thank you for playing and for the constructive feedback! There aren’t many multiplayer one-button games, so I’m pleased I managed to just get that working, though I agree the instructions could be clearer.

I think a more arcade-like “Player 2: Press any button to join!” flashing prompt could help avoid accidentally triggering 2-player mode. It is just semi transparent currently. I could also make Space/Enter work as expected or not at all but still allow you confirm with the smack button. Something to think about for sure.

I also like your idea about the starting ticks. I think I could have made it easier to tell where the half way point is visually by having the balloon leave the screen at the top too, Thanks again for the thoughtful feedback!

Hey I like that it can be multiplayer in the same room. Which works well with choosing a key.

I didn't quite get how to do one player though. I found the hold to select slightly confusing, especially relying on sound only. I also started with the balloons hidden and I wasn't quite sure what was happening.

Nice work for a jam though and I think this would be fine with a little more time!

I might have to hold off on playing this game. I am not a fan of balloons bursting and it makes me feel very stressed and tense. This is practically a horror game for me.

I loved that you made this a two-player game, and I also want to compliment about how this game has a narrative and story to it, even if it’s just a little game. I can easily visualize and imagine that I’m playing with a sibling some kind of “the floor is lava” game (where balloons can’t touch the floor). It’s a fun game to play in real life with balls, but also balloons, if they don’t pop when reaching the ground. But yeah, I am a bit scared to have enough resilience to figure out the game here.

The rest of my feedback is I must confess I didn’t understand very well how to play the game. I think the tension created by the balloon squeaky sounds in the menu, while the instructions were playing, made me unable to focus on them very much, because I was scared. I think this probably didn’t help with me understanding the game. And even how to set up the sounds.

I’m sorry I didn’t play your game properly, but to each their own! I do hope you can get some feedback from other players. Good job once again! Pretty cool you submitted these two games, and especially a multiplayer game! Those are so rare for blind players. So I hope you can continue to experiment with these kind of games! You’re threading the path for a lot of people!

Hi Patricia, thanks again for taking the time to leave feedback!

It was not my intention to make a scary game. And don't worry at all about not playing it. I completely understand if balloons make you uncomfortable. Although the balloon "pops" when you lose, it's actually more of a deflating sound than a loud real balloon bursting, because I thought it sounded funnier. That said, I totally get why the theme alone would make you not want to play.

I'm really pleased you mentioned the multiplayer aspect. I only recently redesigned the game to work with just one button per player, and after looking around on itch.io I was surprised to find that, out of well over 1.5 million games, I couldn't find another local multiplayer audio one-button game by searching the tags. Multiplayer audio games seem to be incredibly rare too, so I'm glad I've been able to make one.

Thank you again for all your encouragement. Hopefully you'll enjoy whatever I make next.

Nicely done! I like that you can use any key for the smack button. I wonder if it could be made to work as "one button" accessible.

Thanks for the suggestion!

The gameplay already only requires one button, but it's definitely possible to make the entire game fully one-button especially now I've recently managed to free up 10 events in the free version of Construct 3 by reworking things so you can potentially cycle through and select unlimited number of balloon colours and cue sounds without using up more events.

I've actually made a few one-button games before, such as ONE TAP CONNECT, which can perform a few actions with a single button. I think I'll make this improvement very soon.

My current idea is that after your score is announced, you could wait for the game to restart or hold a button until the countdown ends to quit, and make it so you can skip somehow eg if you know you did terrible.

Just thought I'd let you know that I took your suggestion on board and have now updated Balloon Smacker so it works with just one button per player throughout the entire game. Thanks for the suggestion again, it was fun to add and makes a lot of sense for accessibility
