What truth claims did I make that are wrong in this zine? If there are any factual errors I would love to correct them!
And would you prefer that I tell readers to not read passages in context? I'm confused by that point. As best as I could I kept full sections of text as separated by the editors of the NRSVUE.
Sure, this might be a bit long but here are my critiques
First of all, naming the translation is important.
You don't name the translation used, as it can change how it is interpreted by an untrained reader (Word for word, Thought for Thought, or paraphrased)
The original greek is also not brought up either, which gives further understanding of what the lord was referring to within the scriptures.
1. The lord obviously believed in Old-Testament wrath, only difference is that now because of the sacrifice judgement awaits until the day of Judgement after the second coming.
2. If you read this without having any idea as to what he's saying, it's obviously going to sound bad. He came to bring a sword, which is the Holy Spirit. The spiritual sword against evil, he shall return to bring peace in the second coming as stated in Revelations, not the first one.
3. We were not all called live this way, that is a calling for the few willing to become an example among men. The lord challenged the rich man to live the life as the saints did after his sacrifice. This is what I meant about out-of-context, it is not a commandment to all but rather to those who are called to be. Also, he was talking to a rich man, this further shows that the Lord was just trying to challenge the rich man as he was self-righteous.
4. Again, out of context with 0 understanding. The slaves he is referring to are the servants of the lord, if you actually read the passage in context. He is telling Christians that they shall be punished greatly for being lukewarm, knowing what their lord wants and not acting , nothing to do with a literal modern day idea of a slave.
5. And for the last time, 0 UNDERSTANDING. As the Lord stated prior, " If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you."
He is commanding you to hate the world as it is in its sin, hate the mother and father that has been corrupted by sin. If the lord meant it the way you thought it did, then that would contradict one of the commandments which states, "Honor your father and mother".
I hope I didn't sound passive aggressive, on the bright side I believe your zine looks very neat and is well done. I found it funny that you added that demonic "pastor" in the later pages, also recommended the book of mormon, a joke in of itself. The back page does list the translation as the NRSVUE. For context, I use it because it's well regarded pretty universally, and it almost always spoken well of by biblical scholars.
As for points 1-5, none of those are countering truth claims that I made. I asked questions while listing verses so that the reader could come to their own conclusion based on the text, I didn't offer theological interpretation. That was very much by design, theology helps to filter the words of Jesus, I tried to avoid adding theological interpretation as best as possible.
But just to be clear that these aren't factual errors, you just disagree with the framing of my questions, which is totally okay with me.
I appreciate the kind words about the designs, I do aim to improve at zine making. And if it inspires you, maybe you can make some pro-christian zines in the future if it's up your alley.
If you want me to address points 1-5 more in depth with my personal opinions, I can. But I wanted to separate technical issues from disagreements.
