i was able to get past that story screen but it was definitely not inuitive whatsoever, so you should probably include something in the game to lead the player to use the arrow keys to scroll that text. a big thing i noticed was that the terrain sprites didn't match up with the collision every time, especially with the slopes in the second level, and overall it creates a less cohesive visual identity to the game. on top of that the fullscreen doesn't really work as intended it seems, in godot you can change the project settings and the fullscreen options to change that. lastly, the excessive use of generative AI is disheartening to see and it kind of hurts the environmental message that the game says it is about, however, i hope you continue to make more things and more independently in the future.

Echoes of the ruins final update's itch.io pageArtistic Statement / Use of Theme
Echoes of Ruins explores the relationship between nature, human development, and the consequences of environmental destruction.
The game takes place in a world where abandoned ruins are being reclaimed by nature. Through exploration and combat, the player sees a world shaped by the conflict between what humanity left behind and the natural world trying to recover.
Our positive climate message is that nature can recover when given the opportunity, but protecting our environment is better than waiting for destruction to happen. The game encourages players to think about restoration, environmental responsibility, and the importance of giving nature space to grow.
The visual style was inspired by pixel-art adventure games, using colorful environments and ruined structures to contrast human construction with the return of nature.
Development Summary
Echoes of Ruins was developed as a small solo game project for Climate Jam 2026.
The project evolved significantly during development as we experimented with the gameplay, level design, enemies, combat, and overall presentation. We focused on creating a compact experience that could communicate the climate theme through the world itself rather than relying only on dialogue or text.
One of the biggest challenges was deciding what to keep and what to cut while working within the jam's time limitations. We prioritized the core gameplay experience, polishing the existing mechanics and preparing the project for submission rather than continuing to add new features.
The development process taught us a lot about scope, iteration, debugging, level design, and finishing a project under a deadline. The final game is the result of continuously improving the original idea while keeping the climate theme at the center of the experience.
(optional) Release Plan
Echoes of Ruins is currently available as a free downloadable game on itch.io.
The project page includes screenshots and promotional material to help players discover the game. We plan to share the game through social media and game-development communities and use player feedback to improve the project if we continue development.
(optional) Further Development Plan
If development continues, we would like to expand the world with additional environments, enemies, bosses, and story elements while exploring more ways to communicate the relationship between nature and human activity. Future updates could also improve the existing levels, add more environmental storytelling, and expand the game's exploration and combat systems.
