Lowering the image quality is a great idea for this jam. I also like how the characters at the top lose quality too, not just the objects in the arena. The game is fast-paced and fun.
The only thing I couldn't figure out was how to interact with the stars on the second level. I tried collecting them and dashing into them, but they just stayed there :(
But that's a small thing. Other than that, the game is pretty unusual and interesting!
Did you press E when the quest near the stars was active?
Your game, by the way, is also excellent!
Ah, now I get it! It's just that the only button shown on the screen at that moment is the dash button, so I didn't realize what I was supposed to do :)
Thanks!
You can collect the stars while the whimsy is active; just get right up close to them and press 'E' to pick them up. Otherwise, they won't be collected (though I can't rule out the possibility of bugs).
I love that you made the art get simpler if you failed. Very cool use of the limitation. Nice work!
Thanks!
Fun fact: if it weren't for the "Whimsy" theme, the idea would have been different)
I really like the core idea, that levels get simpler and simpler, but I think re-making the sprites at a lower resolution would've been a better, albeit longer, approach. I also did encounter a few bugs, like enemies not getting hit with attacks, or what I think were pickups not being collected on the second level. Still a good attempt!
Thanks!
Yeah, that would be pretty cool, thanks for the idea. As for the enemies, for some reason we made it so that you can only attack them if you have a whim.
Fun idea with good visuals, but the game feels really unpolished, even for a jam game. The controls (seem to) sometimes not work, some missions are not very clear, and I pretty much could not get past the second level. Also some background music would be nice
Yeah, it’s pretty unpolished; we were working on a certain idea but then had to rework it. We might finish or revamp the game someday, but thanks for the comment regardless.)
As for the controls, they seem to work fine, though I wouldn't say perfectly... Regarding the quests, we had an idea to add something like a compass, but we ran out of time.
The game randomly freezes requiring the game to be restarted. The tutorial is broken (the enemies never spawn and you can't break the boxes). The timer runs out before you can even find the enemies you need to kill. Also i feel like the game didn't really follow the "as simple as possible" limitation.
Hello! :) We’re not sure what’s causing the lag. We’ve given it to different people to test, and everything works fine for them. Which version are you launching?
We originally planned to make it as simple as possible by simplifying the level using bombs, but they broke, so for now the simplification only applies to the screen.
Hi! We originally had a slightly different idea, but since we were running short on time, we had to change it a bit. We still followed the "As Simple as Possible" limitation, using pixelation (where the screen gradually becomes simpler). Oh, and... we also tried to incorporate the "Whimsy" theme.
Also, could you clarify what you meant by the freezing/hanging issues?
