If you've any questions about how Dead Letter Society works, post them here and I'll give you my best answer. :)

Hi just wondering if you have any idea why I am getting "The application did not respond" when trying to use commands on the discord bot?

Developer

That's new! I asked my tech support (aka my partner, who wrote it) to look into it and he says it's all fixed now.

If anything else goes askew, let me know :)

cheers, seems to be good - will give it a full test out later

Hello! I just started having this issue as well when I went to start a new game.

Developer

Give it a try again now. :)

My tech support (i.e. my partner) has taken a look at it and says it should be fixed.

(It's a host issue -- if anyone else sees this in the future and the problem is recurring, do speak up. Then we'll know how painful it's being for everyone and when to seek another solution.)

If I wanted to play this with a partner who was not physically with me, would that be possible?

Developer

Absolutely!

As long as you both have access to the journaling prompts, you could play by post (eg mailing letters), email, or Discord. I'd suggest getting together on a video/voice call when setting up your game together, as that will be the easiest way of making sure you both have the same expectations. :)

Other than, it is entirely possible to play this game with people in different locations. :)

Thank you for the reply! I wanted to play this with my forever DM who always runs our Pathfinder games and give him a break!

Developer

That sounds like a lovely thing to do! I hope you both have a lot of fun :)

Hi Rori, I was wondering wether it would be easy to adapt the game loop to more than 2 players, you know to get the feeling of an actual society of vampires chatting between each other (let's say 3/4 players), do you have tips for that? Thanks in advance.

Developer(+1)

Hi hutha,

I do have an idea for how this would work with three players; it was a stretch goal that we didn't meet during the Kickstarter for The Almanac of Sanguine Paths (aka "werewolf Dead Letter Society", which is compatible with DLS). In that case, the third player takes on the role of someone working at the Society.

If I were making it myself, I'd give them their own set of tarot card prompts, distinct from those of the vampires. However, to approximate it you'd pass your letters through that third person, and they'd be able to take liberties with what you write and use it for their own purposes.

As for more than three, it's tricky -- it strays into territory that's out of scope for this game. There's certainly nothing stopping you playing two games side-by-side (e.g. A writes to B, and C writes to D), and collaborating on the events of your games together, though I expect you'll need to talk more 'out of game' to maintain world consistency.

Alternatively, you could try having one character write to two others, for example, if you have players A, B, C, and D, then:

A writes to B and C (start in Letter Phase)
B writes to A and D (start in Society Phase)
C writes to A and D (start in Society Phase)
D writes to B and C (start in Letter Phase)

then for the gameplay loop, write two letters in the Letter Phase, and continue with the Society & Chronicle Phases as usual (but receive two letters instead of one during the Chronicle Phase). You probably want to use more than three Chronicle Points during the Chronicle Phase, as it's going to take lots more time for someone to write two letters than one, and you'll end up with more things you want to explore as a result of it. Whatever number you pick, make sure everyone gets the same number of opportunities. (My gut feeling is that six points, while the obvious number, might be too many. I'd be more inclined to try four first.)

If you give this a try, communication between you all is going to be key. I could see four players left to their own journaling coming up with more conflicting ideas to resolve than when it's just two.

I'd be really curious to hear the outcome if you try it!

Still, Dead Letter Society (to me) has been about a personal connection between two vampires aided by a shady society. If you're after something more akin to vampires meeting on a forum/group chat to discuss things, or in person, I think that's heading into different game territory.

Thanks again for the reply,  I wasn't aware of "The Almanac of Sanguine Paths". Actually this was my first journaling game. Nevertheless i like the idea that 1 of the players is part of the society and I will probably follow that route. (granted that they themselves don't know everything either). They could be the one in charge with "approving" the application forms.

I will definetly let you know how it went after we try it!

Hi Rory,  I am starting to play but I am having trouble to find the application fee. Does the application fee is collected right away? For example if it's an ally do I lose in that minute or it will only be collected if I lose or make something that upsets the society.

Developer

I think calling it an "application fee"  makes it sound more arduous than it is (I call it a "complication" in The Almanac of Sanguine Paths, which is more fitting to its purpose – but "application fee" still suits Dead Letter Society thematically.)

The fee is a complication added to one of your Assets, showing some sort of hold that the Society has over it. You don't lose the Asset, but it is a little more burdened than when you originally made it.

If you have an ally, for example, the Society could know about them (so in a future prompt when you're asked to Develop or Forfeit an Actor you could bring that fact to bear -- what did the Society do?). Or it could be someone the Society is hunting for, or wants leverage with, and you are the vector for that.

I like to think of the application fees as "What wouldn't I like a secret society to know about me/have access to of mine?" and work along those lines. It's all fine if the Society is benign – it could be a genuine force for good in your game – but what if it isn't? (Or what if someone else gets access to the Society's secrets and uses them against you. )

Treat the Asset as what it is, but with an extra complicating sentence that you'll use while journalling. :)

I hope that helps! :)

Hi,

I don't know if this is still open. I bought dead letter society at Pax unplugged 2 years ago and have finally found someone to play it with me. We are getting a little stuck on the application fee though. I know you already gave an extra explanation just above here, and an example for an ally. Could you maybe give some examples for the other Asset options as well? Anyway thank you. We are so excited to play. <3

Developer(+1)

Absolutely no problem. :) Let's invent some fees for Madison Aspen, one of the pre-gens in the Modern Day setting!

She has the following assets:

  • (Item) A brand new iPhone
  • (Location) A top-floor artist's studio flat in Soho, London
  • (Actor) Jonah Wallis, a human art forger, mobster, and blackmailer (rival)
  • (Scar) Ran away to London to escape her family
  • (Principle) You only live once.
  • (Ambition) To reforge the status quo, upend traditions, and make a new vampire society that cares about the people it depends on for survival. (Difficulty 3)

Some ideas for fees... these are all "just" ways of adding complications to each others lives (see below re: The Almanac of Sanguine Paths).

  • The iPhone could:
    • Be compromised with software that spies on what she does on it. Who this information goes to, and whether or not Madison knows about it, would be between you to decide.
    • The phone number could have been recycled. It'll soon start ringing and whoever's calling isn't going to expect Madison on the other end.
    • Its battery is absolutely shot, and it's guaranteed to run out at an inopportune moment.
    • It was given to her by another vampire, and she's going to owe them for it.
    • Or gain another item, given to her by the Society.
  • The location could be:
    • Haunted, and Madison's been tasked with getting rid of the ghost or finding something out from it.
    • Bugged. Perhaps to spy on her, perhaps to spy on the folks she has visit.
    • A gift from someone who will want a favour.
    • Compromised to human authorities, but the Society assure her she's safe. For now.
    • Or gain another location, given to her by the Society.
  • The actor could be:
    • In the employ of another vampire who really has an axe to grind, either with Madison or her sire.
    • Someone she needs to befriend, because the Society want something only he can get.
    • He's a connection to her previous life as a human, and the Society know. If he disappeared, that would be one more link to her past severed, no matter how she feels about him.
    • Someone who knows about the Society, and Madison needs to fix the situation before word spreads among humans.
    • Or gain another Actor, introduced to her by the Society.
  • Scar
    • The Society knows where her family live.
    • The Society were responsible for the events led up to her running away, though she may never know it.
    • The Society gave her safe haven in London, perhaps introducing her to the vampire who would become her sire.
    • The Society have promised she'll never be bothered by them again, though what that means is open to interpretation.
    • Or gain another Scar, caused by joining the Society.
  • Principle
    • The most obvious thing to do here is to gain a new Principle, inspired by the events that led to joining the Society. Eg:
    • Don't take things at first appearance.
    • The older they are, the more they won't listen.
    • I will change their whole world.
    • No-one should treat humans as cattle.
  • Ambition
    • For Madison, I'd again add another ambition that's focused on what the Society might want. E.g.:
    • Maintain order in London (Difficulty 3) --> this is in direct competition with what she may want.
    • Investigate [Vampire] and report on their behaviour (Difficulty: variable)
    • Gather a herd of 20 human cattle to deliver to [Vampire] at [Location] on [Date]. (Difficulty: 2) --> something in conflict with her ideals.
    • Pass on messages for the Society to [Vampire] without being discovered. Never open them. Never talk to them. [Difficulty: 2]

I hope that's all helpful. :) In The Almanac of Sanguine Paths I changed the wording on this part of building a character to more closely match how I feel this should go (the hindsight of making another game!). There I call it a "complication to the other characters life." I tried to keep my examples above more in the vein of "a cost caused somehow by the Society", but a simple complication works just as well. :)

Omg! Thank you so much! This was hugely helpful!

I may post here more if I have more questions. (Selfishly, but also it might help other people).

No worries at all! It's what this section's for. :)

Hello there, I picked up Dead Letter Society as my second solo RPG game, and for a few days I was a little confused about the solo play instructions so I figured it would be best to clarify before I start. I think I understand them better now, but I want to double check to avoid confusion.

I am playing solo and at least for my first game, I'd like to keep things simple and act as if I am receiving letters in the chronicle phase, as per the brief correspondence rules. It says to draw from the Major Arcana and journal about the perceived letter's contents.

I would do this in addition to any journaling from spending my Chronicle points, right?

Developer

Absolutely correct. Use the Major Arcana card to draw conclusions about what the vampire communicating with you might write about. You don't need to do anything with your own Assets as a result of drawing the card, or track theirs. It's purely to give you an idea of the troubles they could be going through. Your character's chronicle points are for your character only. :)

Okay, thank you so much! I'm so excited to play, both solo and duo!

Hello Rori!

I'm trying to play the game with a friend, we will use post mail service and now when I try to figure out how we play, it's a bit confusing for me.

This is what I understood so far:

1- I write the letter to my friend

2- She receives the letter and in that moment I start the Society phase? Here I draw a major arcana card

3- She writes me back and when I receive the letter, I do the Chronicle phase? Here I draw a minor arcana card, then on her side, she enters the society phase and draws her major arcana.

Is this correct? Haha sorry, my native language isn't English so maybe I'm making it more complicated than it is!

Thank you so much!

Developer

Hello!

You're almost correct. :)

1. You write a letter to your friend and send it.

2. Start the Society Phase and draw a Major Arcana card. You don't need to wait for your friend to receive your letter.

3. Start the Chronicle Phase whenever you're ready for it. You don't need to wait for your friend to have received your letter to do this.

Ideally, you should receive and read a letter before you go back to (1) and write another letter. You may want to save some of your Chronicle Points to react to/explore any topics in your friends letter (but you don't have to).

Basically, as soon as you've sent your letter you continue to your next phase independent of what your friend is doing. The goal is to have received a letter before you write again, to avoid overwhelming one person with more letters than they can handle. :)

I hope that helps clear things up! :)

Oooooh, thank you, Rori! Understood!

In the case of my friend, she starts right at the Society Phase, correct? As I wrote the letter first and will send it to her.

Haha, thank you for your patience, we are loving designing our vampires and will even create some drawings!

Developer

Yes, that's correct. :)

Hello! I was looking to purchase a softcover copy of the book, but it looks like the US carriers are all sold out (or in the case of Exalted, the listing is gone entirely). Do you know if there will be any new copies provided to those sellers? Or if they'll be available at Pax Unplugged this year by chance?

Developer

I have a (very) small handful of copies here in the UK, but otherwise this print run has sold out. I'm figuring out the logistics of a new print run, so hopefully it'll be back in stock in the US in a few weeks.

Thank you!
