Hello!! If you were making a game, what Game Engine would you pick Unity or Unreal?

BE HONEST!

Choose one and explain why.

I never used unreal but from what I heard, Unreal works great for 3D but not well for 2D games. Unity also does good for 3D (Though Unreal is probably superior) but much better for 2D development. I’ve been learning game development for 10 months now, only used Unity for 3 of those months the rest have been on Godot. Never tried Unreal since I’m focused on 2D games and based on what I heard Unreal doesn’t render 2D games very well.

Mm, Alright!

I've been using Gamemaker for over 10 years for my 2D games. If I wasn't so accustomed to it or wanted to make 3D games I would probably switch to Godot.

We started 1 1/2 years ago with unity and i think it was the right decision to do so. Its easier to get into than unreal and you develop a good mindset about how to make a game i think, whats important and what concept within the engine you need to know. After your first game you can still choose to try out unreal, but im pretty sure its a lot easier that way around.
but the most important part is to just keep on working on your games . Keep up the motivation and finish it, even if only your friends are gonne play it :)

:)

After briefly following the Unity drama with the game Rust I'm not sure if I want to ever use Unity. So many good alternatives out right now like Godot and Gdevelop. Unreal is not as scary as it seems, you can get a lot done with templates and blueprints.

I won't pick any of both. I already used them a bit and didn't like them, i found them too cumbersome, but one of the main reasons I am wary of using them is because their business models, SaaS. I think they are a trap and not actually completely free since you are attached to the ToS of those engines and if a sudden change occurs, like a free featured turned paid or an increase in the royalties, etc. You basically have 2 options: Not use them or accept new terms that you may not like.

So, honestly. I prefer other engines. Like Coppercube, GameGuru Max if i find it useful, or IDK, Perhaps O3DE or GODOT. A game engine that if i have to pay, it's a one time license.

So none. And there is not such thing as the best. If you have a 'best one' then the rest wouldn't exists. haha. I just pick up based in what i want and what i want to fight against.

Like, Coppercube for PS1,PS2 looking games. Game Guru Max for good graphics but limited to First person games, O3DE for an Unreal Like workflow and results but with complexities added (and lack of documentation and tutorials).
