I really like the ironic take this game makes on AI, it's funny and I was pleasantly surprised! Perhaps I didn't pay enough attention first playthrough on the two phases, but I was more so confused on the gardening part than the tower defense and how they tied together. The idea that you are defining yourself from protesters is pretty funny though. Overall, I enjoyed the story for its unique spin and found the game to be engaging. Great work!

ANGRY GRANDMA SERVER PLANTS's itch.io pageArtistic Statement / Use of Theme
Our project responds to development's impacts on the environment and local communities. Using AI data centers' massive water use as an example, we want to uncover how digital infrastructure, hidden behind seemingly green and harmless interfaces, impacts local lives and the global climate. For reasons such as lower taxes, labor, and land, tech corps tend to build their infrastructure in underprivileged and vulnerable communities that lack avenues to be heard. This aggravates not only climate change but also regional environmental injustice.
We believe that this is one of the most pressing yet seldom addressed environmental challenges nowadays. Through this game, we want to evoke reflection and foster awareness of what we take for granted. On a deeper level, we want to reflect on the problematic mode of profit-driven development and foster a degrowth way of thinking.
We are inspired by community-based resistance movements happening worldwide — most notable among them is "Your cloud is drying my river" against Amazon's proposed new data centers in Aragon, Spain. In terms of gameplay, the project is inspired by tower defense games.
Development Summary
Due to prior plans, we missed the first 3 weeks of the jam, so our entire project was developed in just 3 weeks by sleepless developers. We had to make major changes to gameplay and narrative to finish the game on time, omitting lots of our original design. The hardest thing to cut is text and stories.
We are a team of two: Sherry, the game designer, programmer, and soundmaker. leaf-a, the artist and programming support.
