Theme explanation
My first thought on hearing the theme was the map overlays on old city-builder games. I extended this idea by having the mayoral office be a whole other layer to the game. I also tried to make people more complex by having them discover new interests and so forth as they spend time in your town, provided you keep them happy.

You did all that alone in such a short time???

If any team would told me ahead of time they are gonna make this kind of game in a jam I would be freaking out because of time constrains. This is an amazing gem!!

Here is my town, I have the file downloaded to continue later on

Very cool town! Thanks for all the kind words.

holy cow this is incredible. actually made something so nostalgic and amazing for this jam, this has been one of my favorites!

You did so much in a short time! Really enjoyable to play, brings me back to my childhood of playing roller coaster tycoon games <3

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I loved those Roller Coaster Tycoon games too.

Wow what an amazing game. Really well done, super polished and really fun to play. I am usually not a big fan of city builders but I became addicted in a few seconds. Amazing work honestly !

I love this game so much !!! Everything is amazing except for the fact that sometimes a house that had an happy character in it suddendly changes characters for an unhappy one. Other than this, it is AMAZING !!!

Developer(+1)

I think this will be because of an upgrade to their house, which causes their goals to change? I really need to improve the happiness system to give better feedback around that; currently it isn't too clear at all why this happens for players. Maybe several tiers of happiness for an upgraded vs a non-upgraded house? Will definitely be something to improve if I get time for a post-jam version.

soo polished, great amount of complexity and i loved to see a town building game in the jam!!!  for sure a game that i would love to see being expanded

also had a bug where my whole city disappeared and turned into a white square when I switched tabs on the browser and came back, but I tried to recreate the bug afterwards and couldn't, so it's probably not a big deal

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much! I really appreciate the kind words.

I think the bug might be your browser losing its WebGL context. Context lost events require games to rebuild everything because the graphics system on your computer has completely forgotten about the game (usually because it was too busy doing something else). They can be tracked, but it's painful to re-set-up everything exactly (ie, reload every texture, recompile every shader, etc etc) while the game model is still running; I've seen many commercial engines fail at this too. Since they're rare even when switching tabs, I didn't think it was worth tracking context-lost events too carefully in this jam but would definitely do so if I had more time. One reason why I recommend people full-screen the game is also as a signal to the graphics card that the game should take priority in video memory.

What you should still be able to do if it happens again, because it doesn't depend on WebGL at all, is hit escape to open the in-game menu. This should allow you to save the game, then refresh the page, and load your save. Sorry for the silly workaround!

fun and cute, quite polished for a jam too!

What a polished game! It is complete and the fact that all of it was made in 9 days is insane. I especially liked the visuals and music, great job!

It really felt like playing the early sims. Great work! It's incredible how much you managed to do in such a short time, I love it.

I love this game. The mechanics have a lot in common with the old sierra city builder games like "Zeus: Master of Olympus". It's really awesome and I'm very impressed by how much you were able to do in this time.

Developer(+1)

Thanks, I did take a bit of inspiration from those (especially the house upgrading), although their "walker system" is light years more advanced than this is lol. But one feature that I did cut from the game was directly inspired by Zeus - I did have an idea that there would be inter-town competitions with other mayors, like tests of friendship or beauty or fun challenges. On the other hand, I always wanted something where the people were not all the same in their wants. I was definitely more inspired by the Sims games in that respect, and in the decoration aspect. Anyways, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! :)

Oh that would have been fun, but online stuff is always pretty challenging, especially with a short time and when you make your own engine. So it's totally understandable you ended up not doing it. Anyway it's great you were actually inspired by those games, I fell like not that many people know about them today.

Incredible achievement for such a short amount of time! I had so much fun with this game and I loved the cozy feel especially when it was winter and the town festival started? SO CUTE. 😇💗 Overall, amazing work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much. The festival almost got completely cut, actually - I had one day to go and I'd done the music for it, but no art at all. Plus a bunch of other stuff to do and test on my list, so I wouldn't get all the mechanics done for it. But I figured if at least a few buildings could have festival decorations that'd be fine. I think it was a good move to keep it in the end; you're right, it definitely adds to the cosy vibe.

incredibly complex game considering how little time it took to make! i love that you can decorate your office and collect stamps too! :D

Nice town! :)

Submitted(+1)

I wasn't expecting a building game but it was a nice surprise !

Submitted(+1)

This is so impressive to see in a game jam! You did so much work in very little time, the vibes are great, and all of the different mechanics are really cool. Would love to see this expanded in the future!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for the kind words! I hope I get a chance one day to do game dev more seriously.

Submitted(+1)

I did not expect a city builder, but I now I remember how popular those were for a while. Well matched!

Submitted(+1)

Wow! A city builder on my browser!
