Pixel Artist Wanted for: "In Tobias’ Shadow" — 2D Metroidvania

I'm looking for a pixel artist/animator to help develop the visual identity of In Tobias’ Shadow, a dark atmospheric Metroidvania currently in development. If you cannot meet these requirements, please do not reply. Be honest.
This is Paid, yes, but more of a paid collaboration of sorts. I am looking for someone who genuinely wants to develop the main character and is interested in the theme/lore in general.

I'm primarily looking for someone who can handle:

  • Character sprite sheets and animation
  • Enemy sprite sheets and animation

The game combines a late-1800s gothic setting with alien/sci-fi elements, so I'm looking for an artist who can move between old architecture, underground environments, laboratories, alien technology, creatures, and humanoid characters without everything feeling like it came from a generic asset pack.

Art Direction

The goal is high-quality, detailed pixel art suitable for a professional Metroidvania.

References for the general level of quality would be games such as Blasphemous, Dead Cells, The Last Faith, and other modern high-end pixel-art games, although I'm developing my own visual identity rather than trying to copy any particular game. (No AI art)

Characters need to have strong silhouettes and smooth, readable animation. I'm especially interested in an artist who understands that a good sprite sheet isn't simply a collection of good-looking individual drawings—the proportions, positioning, timing, and movement need to remain consistent from frame to frame.

Animation Work

Characters and enemies will eventually require things such as:

  • Idle
  • Walk / run
  • Jump / fall / land
  • Turn
  • "Dodge" (Slip Step)
  • Attacks
  • Blocking
  • Hurt / death
  • Interactions
  • Special abilities
  • Character-specific animations

There will also be more unusual animations for story moments and interactions as development progresses.

What I'm Looking For

I'd especially like to work with someone who:

  • Has strong pixel-art fundamentals
  • Can animate characters smoothly
  • Maintains consistent proportions between frames
  • Can work within exact sprite dimensions and grids
  • Can interpret concept art and descriptions
  • Is comfortable receiving detailed feedback
  • Communicates reliably and daily
  • Can provide progress updates during active work
  • Is interested in developing a consistent visual style over time rather than just making isolated assets

Communication is extremely important to me. This is a project where we'll be iterating on characters, animations, and visual ideas together, so I need someone who is reasonably responsive and comfortable discussing their work throughout the process.

Paid Work

I would initially like to start with a smaller paid test assignment, making a static side view sprite for Viktor (the game's protagonist). The purpose is to make sure the art style, detail, quality, workflow, and communication are a good fit for both of us before committing to more work.

If we're a good fit, there is potentially a lot of ongoing work as the game develops.

Interested?

Please send me:

  • Your portfolio
  • Examples of character animation
  • Examples of environment art, if applicable
  • Your normal rates
  • Your availability
  • Your preferred method of communication
  • Any shipped games or projects you've contributed to

Hi! I’m interested in the paid test assignment and the possibility of contributing to the project long-term.

I’ll share examples of my previous work directly here on Itch.io, including relevant character animation and other artwork. The paid test assignment for Viktor sounds like a great way to see whether the art style, quality, workflow, and communication are a good fit for both of us.

I’m also happy to discuss my normal rates, availability, and preferred method of communication. My Discord username is tunnyfunny if that’s convenient for you.

I’d be happy to hear more about the project and discuss the details. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Thank you for the reply. Im looking for a different type/style of art

Alright thanks

Hello there! I saw your post looking for a pixel artist for your dark atmospheric Metroidvania In Tobias Shadow. I specialize in clean consistent character sprite sheets and smooth animations. How are you planning to blend the late-1800s gothic architecture with the alien sci-fi elements in the game's visuals?

DISCORD: bimplee

MY PAST WORK: https://www.artstation.com/strawblee

Your portfolio looks like it's 100 different artists

Hi! I’m Sándalo from Thunder Noise, a small indie friendly game art studio from Spain.

We’d be very interested in In Tobias’ Shadow. The gothic setting mixed with alien and sci fi elements sounds especially interesting to us, and we have experience working with detailed pixel art, characters, animation, environments and game ready assets.

You can see our work here:

https://thundernoiseart.com

https://www.behance.net/gallery/75745997/portfolio

https://x.com/ThunderNoiseArt

https://x.com/Raysixx_

Our website is still in development, so we can also show you more relevant work privately.

Our usual rate for indie collaborations is around €20 to €22 per hour, although we’re also comfortable working with fixed prices per character, animation or milestone.

The paid Viktor test sounds like a good way to start. Once we see the intended sprite size and references, we can give you a fixed price for it.

We’re comfortable with regular communication and progress updates, and we’d definitely be interested in a longer collaboration if the first test works well.

Would love to see the character references and learn more about the visual direction you have in mind.

Your profiles are all different pictures and names. And it says you outsource. I'll pass

Hi, I don't understand the problem. We're the team you see on our website. What do you mean by different pictures and names? We're a small art team working under the name Thunder Noise. We don't hire anyone who isn't listed on our website.

it mentions outsourcing on your thunder noise profile, which you are claiming to do everything in house, but I take that as you find people to hire to fulfill the jobs needed. thats what outsourcing is in a nutshell.

the top website is so laggy its barely browsable.

the thunder noise X link - hasn't seemingly posted anything relevant since 2023? most of which are silly memes/videos (which get in the way of viewing your actual development). The posts that are of game development are 3-4 year old assets. Your portfolio hasn't been updated in 3 years?

your behance profile has a total of 9 examples on it, and only a few are even pixel art related.

and then the raysixx - X profile is just a guy from sweden with a hundred text posts in his native language from 2012??

you say your name is Sandalo from thunder noise, a small studio from spain. but then the discord is Raysixx, a guy from Sweden??

Oh wow! I appreciate your comment; I see everything I'm doing wrong. I really appreciate your feedback.

I've tested the website on several devices and with different people, and no one had mentioned that it was too slow to navigate. I'll look into that.

You're right, perhaps "outsourcing" isn't the best word. What I meant was that other projects can contact us to help them with their projects.

Thunder Noise hasn't posted anything on Twitter for years because we've been working on a couple of projects that we haven't been able to showcase yet. We also had to stop our activity for a while, at least publicly, due to financial problems.

You're right, my Behance profile and the studio's are still pretty much inactive. That's what happens when you have to sign NDAs sometimes.

Yes, my name is Sandalo, and I see the problem: the link being interpreted is "@raysixx," not "@Raysixx_," which is mine.

Again, thank you for these observations, thank you for your time. I would also like to offer you a small art sample; we can talk on Discord and you can see how we work.

Art sample meaning what? I am on discord @Real8e

I'm interested!

You replied to my previous post already

Oh I totally forgot you got back to me, my bad

no worries

Hi, I’m interested in this project. I do pixel art, character sprites, animation, and environment work, and I’d be interested in helping build the style of the game over time.

You can check my work here: https://amysaurus.artstation.com/

Could you send me the sprite dimensions/grid size, Viktor’s concept art, expected animations for the test, the budget for the paid test, and the timeline? My Discord is amysaurus_1

Thank you for replying. Cool stuff, but the Style doesn't match what I'm looking for.

Hey there,

Since there is no contact info I will drop my links below. I am a pixel artist and game developer based in Thailand.

The reference you have give is quite detailed and I would like to check with you a few things.

  • What is the base resolution size for the sprites?
  • Since it is a long term project what is the target deadline for the project?
  • How many artists will be part of the project?

PORTOFOLIO: https://www.artstation.com/yaninyunus | https://linktr.ee/yaninyunus

  • Examples of character animation: There are characters I've created on my itch profile for asset packs and more for some games/artworks that you can find in my portfolio
  • Examples of environment art, if applicable: There are tilesets I've created on my itch profile and more for some games/artworks that you can find in my portfolio
  • Your normal rates: for freelance work I charge per scope, task and deadlines. It seems better to discuss if you are interested in my art style
  • Your availability: Open to work task based, or part time depending on requirements & offer
  • Your preferred method of communication: Discord for fast, industry niche communication
  • Any shipped games or projects you've contributed to: https://yaninyunus.itch.io and there are 2 commercial games I am currently working on their last phases

if you are interested you can contact me on discord: yaninyunus

Looking forward, good luck on the project!

thank you for the thorough reply. youve got some nice work, but the style isnt what I am looking for on this particular project. Thanks again

Hello and good day to you! My alias is Rojatzo and I would like to apply for the pixel artist position. I see you already have a lot of applications so I'll try to be as brief as possible.

About the requirements:

  • Has strong pixel-art fundamentals
    • I have worked as a full time freelance pixel artist for the past five years. I studied animation in UNITEC (Mexico) and I'm pretty confident in my understanding of pixel art as a whole.
  • Can animate characters smoothly
    • As previously stated, I studied animation. I specialize in 2D frame by frame animation, but I'm also familiar with the 'cut-out' method.  Here are a couple of examples of my previous work:
    •
  • Maintains consistent proportions between frames
    • One thing I've paid special close attention to is this. Here is an example with a previously made sprite on different states and maintaining same proportions:
    •
  • Can work within exact sprite dimensions and grids
    • I would have no problem with this. I am accustomed to working on both limited sizes and palettes. Both of these characters are made in the exact same grid.
    •
  • Can interpret concept art and descriptions
    • Yes, I can do this as well. Here is an example of a provided concept art and the result.
  • Is comfortable receiving detailed feedback
    • No problem on this part.
  • Communicates reliably and daily
    • My discord is always open.
  • Can provide progress updates during active work
    • I can do this as well.
  • Is interested in developing a consistent visual style over time rather than just making isolated assets
    • I would love to five it a shot.

The most important part:

  • Your portfolio
  • Examples of character animation
    •
  • Your normal rates
    • My rates are $25 USD per hour.
  • Your availability
    • I am currently open for work 24/7
  • Your preferred method of communication
    • Discord is my go-to. You will be able to contact me with my tag Rojatzo
  • Any shipped games or projects you've contributed to

I would be glad to give you a free trial to test if my skillset is what you are looking for. I hope we can get in contact soon. Thank you and I hope we get to work together!

Thank you for the thorough reply. Based on what I've seen, your style doesn't seem like the right match for my project. I am looking for more mature, realistic, gritty, dark art. Not cartoony, quirky, comicy, "gamey", etc. if that makes sense. If you want to do the free test, then by all means, have at it, but I don't want you to waste your time that could be spent doing other things.

I would like to give it a shot if you'll allow me. I could try my best at adapting to that which you are looking for,

Hi! I'm very interested in the project, especially the combination of late-1800s gothic architecture with alien/sci-fi elements. I think my experience could be a strong fit for what you're looking for.

I've worked professionally across multiple game titles and visual-novel projects. I've worked as a background artist on Trailblazed into the March, as a lead artist on Kingswell, and as the main artist on Misadventures of Spaceman Biff, alongside various other projects where I've created things like backgrounds, posters, promotional artwork, and visual development.

One thing I wanted to specifically mention is my experience with alien/sci-fi architecture. I did a significant amount of that work for Misadventures of Spaceman Biff, including architecture and environment work that I think is particularly relevant to the kind of world you're describing. Unfortunately, the game hasn't been released yet, and that work isn't currently included in my public portfolio. The Steam page also doesn't really represent the scope or quality of the environment/architecture work I did for the project.

I'm happy to show that work privately if you'd like to see it.

My current portfolio contains a mixture of pixel art, environment work, illustration, and concept art, organized into their respective folders. Not all of my work is pixel art, but I have experience working across gritty sci-fi, medical/industrial environments, atmospheric settings, and character/visual development, so I believe there's quite a bit there that could translate well to In Tobias' Shadow.

I've also been working professionally on games for several years and have experience adapting to an established visual direction, taking feedback, and developing a consistent style across a project rather than simply producing standalone pieces.

I'm open to do a free test. I'd be happy to do the test and see if my style and workflow are a good fit for the project.

Sent you a req on discord

Bump. Still looking for real artists who aren't scammers

That is really crazy to hear... I have noticed a couple of recurrent AI-slop posts but I couldn't imagine that so many people are like that.

I have seen this add before but since I saw so many good portfolios here, I decided to not post mine. Since aparently that is not the case xD here you are my portfolio in case you are still looking for someone.

I am not the best pixel artist around here, but I am an artist which just wanna make fun and pretty games :) I do love metroidvanias, and even participated in a coupld of metroidvanias game jams.

If you are looking for a colleague (for a short or long period of time, doesn't matter), you can contact me here _scr_

I offer fair prices for indie projects like this one :)

yes I know. I didnt realize how bad it got until I started getting through all these messages and profiles. be fair warned
but thanks for reaching out. Well we can see if there is something that you could do for the project. Do you have Discord? if so, add me @Real8e so we can discuss it further. Thanks

Hey there! This is my portfolio https://jeremiasdiaz.my.canva.site/#pixel-art there's plenty of animations that I did but the closest to this style is maybe some of that I did for trailblazers in my portfolio I guess you're looking for something more "stylized realistic animations" instead of cartoon and I think I can handle that too.

I'm available to work rn, I work for $15/hour and can work 4 hours a day, Monday through Friday.

I preffer to communicate via Discord @usernamussy

Deleted 15 hours ago

there is no schedule. I am a us navy veteran, working solo. so basically nothing but time to work, and infinite work at that. I can add you on Discord and give you more information about the project, then we can go from there?
