The piece feels somewhat overloaded with ideas. There is a whole lot going on that I'm sure a jazz student would have the proper vocabulary for, but I had a hard time even just identifying the pulse. I think it might help to have a rhythm instrument to keep the time, or alternatively, be very generous with the instrument dynamics to clearly communicate where your measures start and end.
