I'm kinda buzzing with thoughts about this now. I wish more/games like this existed! and I'm kinda thinking about the logistics of making my own.
Like, I really enjoy resource management games. Those are usually structured around city building and villagers, but you could do like a food forest management game with a focus on sustainable practices and such. Or building off your idea for a game where you're farming for sustenance, a lot of resource management games have a very simple farming aspect, so I don't think it would be a stretch to expand on that.
I think it's a great point that farming sims are very capitalism minded. It's sort of the whole 'art is always political' thing. Like even unintentionally the things we make and have accepted as standard in the genre point to what we consider normal & what goes unchallenged in our thought processes. A lot of these games are very much just resource extraction games. and that betrays a world view, intentionally included or not.
