A pleasant, short, but complete game, great job for a first project! Mechanics and programming aren't really my main area, but I think I can give you a bit of feedback regarding the art.
I see a few easy ways to improve the game's atmosphere without necessarily creating much more advanced graphics. The colors here are a bit washed out and very cheerful. Even just making the grass slightly darker and grayer would give it a darker tone. I also think it's much better to make art that might not be perfect in every way, but is consistent. Right now, the graphics don't quite blend well together, they have different, somewhat unappealing colors and varying levels of texture detail. Creating a single color palette that fits the game's theme would definitely be a plus. Another nice touch would be giving a few different colors to the NPCs.
I also recommend changing the game page, it doesn't take long, you can even just match the background color of the page to the color of the map in the game or something, or to the cover, it's very simple and it really encourages you to play.
Besides that, I think adding negative consequences for hitting a real human would be a good idea. I was just casting spells whenever there were a lot of NPCs around me and didn't really care whether they were real or not. Overall, I didn't feel much tension or pressure, knowing that if I lost, I could just restart and rush through the game quickly anyway. It would also be cool if the map changed slightly with each level, not necessarily full new graphics, but just rearranging the houses, paths, etc., into different spots.
I also have to praise the music, I think it's one of the brightest spots of the game. Also, It's cool that you included a classic intro, it's always nice when even a short game has a bit of background story sketched out.
Overall, a really great project! It’s awesome that you're stepping outside your usual domain of art, it's very inspiring. My game for this jam was also the first standalone game I ever finished. Programming has never been easy for me, so it's great to see other people trying to expand into more fields just like I am. Great job, I'm proud of you! ♥
