Description
"The Long Trek" is the title track in my hypothetical 3D adventure game, "Echoes of Unity", that represents the journey that Una is going to embark on, with all the wonder yet isolated tone of the game. "Our Home" is a track that would play during a cinematic cutscene where Una makes it to the festival of Zephania after her adventure to get there. Una, an 18-year-old girl who has lived in the Western world her entire life, makes it her mission to discover her past and heritage by going back to Zephania, the land of undying light and unity. As a flautist (someone who plays flute), she learns different melodies along the way through her encounters with different cultures. As she makes it back to Zephania, the Light Festival begins that night, as "Our Home" is played, representing some of the music that she has learned and her adventure.

I used a core symphonic group of piano, woodwinds, strings, percussion, and brass. For the cultural side, I used instruments like the er hu, bansuri, shamisen, tabla hand drums, and Balkan-Mongolian vocals. For structure, I used Dorian, minor, and pentatonic in the 1st half, then modulated to the relative major in the 2nd half to illustrate that tonal shift.

Message from the artist
Thank you for listening to my two tracks! I have not done a composing jam since 2023, so it's such a pleasure to be back. Here's hoping that I'll do more and maybe collaborate on more game jams.

Theme

Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
What stood out with picture were the eclectic cultural outfits and diverse colors, alongside the mixed instruments (sitar, violin, etc.). Because of that, I wanted to convey a celebration of all music and culture with the cultural grooves, ethnic instrumentation, ethereal vocals, alongside the core Western Symphony. Additionally, the birds gave me a grand, fleeting feel, which inspired me to include nature sounds in the middle and use these grand, wondrous chords at the end. Lastly, the composition diversity of the picture inspired me to create an emotional arc of perseverance with the 1st half and celebration with the 2nd half, and finally ending with a sense of revival and wonder.

The Long Trek - has very pleasant vibe Our Home - I like that transition to calm in the middle of the track Vocals are peak!

Developer

Glad you loved the vocals! It was one of the first elements I knew I wanted to add.

Our home immediately hooked me with some fantastic sounds and progressions. And because it's fast and fun which is my favorite.

I love that you included your progression of chords in the process so I could better follow along and hear how things changed and evolved. It was deep and complex while being easy and fun to listen to. My favorite parts were of course the fast and rhythmic parts such as the very start. The slower middle section was no slouch though as it still had a fun melody and beautiful chords and notes.

Excellent work!

Developer

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the journey of the piece and that the chord structure I provided helped you follow along.

Unrelated to the soundtrack, but i loved the cover art! Vocals were unexpected, the other cultural instruments are great too

Thanks! Wanted to show an abstract depiction of unity. Glad you liked the vocals and cultural instruments too. Also love the Yosuke pfp

The Long Trek

Beautiful ambience, I loved when the flute in the background played.

Our Home

Amazing cool track ! I really liked the work on the rhythmic part of the track in the first half. I would have loved some bigger drums or impacts to really accentuate each beginning of phrase (when the gong plays)

Lovely vibe shift. And here I got my timpanis, so I'm satisfied.

That track was a beautiful adventure consisting of 3 movements. That 2nd movement had me smile already, because it's the kind of vibe I love, but when the 3rd one started, phew... it was so good, so grand, so powerful. It was a real delight to listen to this track and follow the story of Una.

Amazing, wonderful job for both of your tracks. You made my day.

Developer

I have no words to say but thank you, wow. The 2nd track was so fun to compose, so that means a lot.

I really enjoyed this! A tasteful mash of both eastern and western musical styles, with clear movement and development all throughout. I'd have loved to have heard a track between "The Long Trek" and "Our Home" to help tie them together, as the correlation wasn't super-duper prevalent until (and from) two and a half minutes into Our Home, but once that woodwind section hit, It all made sense!

Thank you so much! I wish I had time to make a 3rd track, but I was so busy during the first few weeks of my university semester, haha. Maybe I'll make a 3rd track once I find the time outside the game jam.

Yeah, I feel that haha. I only had time to put together one track I was happy with in between work.

Hello fellow Cubase user :)

Your opening track set a clear atmosphere.

The tonal shift in the second track felt a bit abrupt at first, but the following ascension was powerful and the calming descent after that was lovely ! Well orchestrated :D It conveys the resolution of your story very well. With the voices singing in joy. (There is another tonal shift there right?) It is really seemless, and reinforces the power of the ending of the song. Really great closing ! Congrats :)

That means a lot! Glad the story of my game was conveyed well through the two tracks you listened to.
