I feel stuck, though maybe I'm just in a grindy part of the game.

I don't know that anyone's much bothered by spoilers for that early in the game. There are some spoilers for much later in the game already in the previous comments. Anyway, TL is not the same thing as elemental affinity. TL is technique level: you need to get the level of the elemental technique up to at least 20 by fighting with it. And you also need to get the elemental affinity of that element up to at least 10. That's the part that might take a while at that point. But those are two different things. Once you have both of those things for an element, that element is ready. Now I don't remember exactly what it's ready for, but the techniques page should tell you. Anyway, that should get you pointed in the right direction at least.

Oh, thank you! How do you get elemental techniques? I don't see them anywhere

Right, as the other reply asked, you got out of Willowbrook, right? Have you been to the elemental towns? You should be able to train in each town with an elemental master.

Do you mean the 10 towns where you get the talismans? I completed getting those 10, but the only place available outside of Willowbrook now is the wilderness where you "wander the old country." I've checked every tab and I don't see any other way to go somewhere

Ah, I figured it out!! I didn't see the new explore choice that appears once you save Willowbrook.

you should be able to with the headstart you get for getting 10 talismans

yes that is what you should do

although if you save up some time points and use 1000x it will pass much faster than otherwise(genereally the entire game is very slow off of 1000x)

and there is a feature that speeds up elemental affinity gain very fast that you should reach soon if you havent already
