Delightfully disgusting :D The worm walls of the map really help selling the vibe! The concept is really straightforward and delivers well on the theme. The rebirth mechanic is really interesting and goes hand-in-hand with what seems like a proportionately deadly dungeon. This module would be really interesting to fit in a campaign, having the surviving characters leaving the mountain with all of their boons and banes.

The last room and conclusion I felt a bit ambivalent about:

  • On one hand, the worm-then-PvP aspect comes a bit as a surprise: It’s only telegraphed by the ancient motifs, but this is the room you fight the worm-thing (it’s not explicitly saying this, but I feel like I’m 99% sure on this) and there’s also the statues holding up the ceiling, so there’s a lot of information to present and process at once in this room and it might end up feeling like an anti-climatic rug-pull.
  • On the other hand, the transformation depends on failing a wisdom save, so it’s never really a given that it would happen.

I think if running this, I would probably adjust this last room to make it totally clear that whoever deals the killing blow becomes the next worm-thing, and let the players figure out the consequences.

Thank you so much!!

And you know what you're right, maybe the motif walls should be on the outside in the main chamber, and it should be something to uncover.

And to be honest, the worm transformation is definitely contentious and even I'd probably only run it sometimes because it's so mean, but I wanted to capture that old school trickery.

Great and yucky use of the worm theme

My favorite bit:

“Bodies float and can be walked on.”

Clever way to change the environment as characters die and reincarnate.

“Hadal” is hard to read in that font. Body text is readable and I dig it.

Might be fun to throw a “weird lil guy” in there somewhere to change the pace and mix up the theme a bit if that makes sense.

Lots of systems to fit in 4 pages but you’ve explained it very well. Impressive. So many tables too!

Thanks so much!

Yes totally agree, I do wish I added a weird little wormy guy somewhere to change it up.

Very thematic and on-theme with the worminess of it all! Loved the hexmap, and all of the roll tables. This all seems extraordinarily deadly, but that is obviously softened by the resurrection mechanics. I think stacking banes/boons would’ve been very funny, but obviously punishing. Good work!

Thanks so much!

I mean hey nothing says you can't homebrew stacking the Blessings and Banes, but I can't promise a play tested experience!

SO MANY WORMS. This is great, I love the resurrection idea and how wormy everything is. Room 8 / the conclusion is a little bit confusing - what are the 6 statues, why are four damaged and two not? At what point does the Worm-Thing attack (as it is initially described as unmoving)? If the dungeon collapses do they get any loot? The murals are a bit confusing as well, I can imagine conquering civilization is what Worm-Thing wants but as it is still in here, presumably it hasn't achieved this previously - so maybe it was also defeated by previous trial entrants but then resurrected itself slowly?
That said, I do think with something this daft the plot doesn't need to make too much sense and otherwise this is perfect and wonderful.

Developer

Thanks so much!

And great questions, to which all can be summed up: what do you think?

But that might be a bit lazy and a bit vague so let me try to answer here:

- what are the statues? You decide! Definitely an ancient motif but also some sort of artifact?

- why are they damaged? Who knows, earthquake? Maybe something incredibly strong started what you must finish?

- Good point, this was missed, could be wherever for pacing though

- Depends , can they grab any? They don't have much time!

- Intentionally vague but frankly you got it so maybe not too vague? Clearly something went wrong and not as intended by the murals depiction!

Hopefully it was interesting enough to worm it's way into your thoughts! Appreciate the feedback greatly

That’s probably one of the deadliest adventures I’ve read in the jam, and while I usually don't appreciate lethality for the sake of it, the rebirth process in the worm pool is so delightfully weird and fun to imagine that I really want to run it. The conclusion is totally unexpected, too... really great work, caught me by surprise.

Wow thanks for such kind words! What a compliment 🙏 Glad you enjoyed it!

I guess it was unavoidable to be weird, given the title.

Great worm stuff. The rebirth mechanic with changing boons/banes brings a lot of movement into the adventure. I look forward to running this.

A bit juvenile, but an optional rule would be “take a shot on death”, correct?

Developer(+1)

I mean that's absolutely an optional rule I condone but don't endorse 😂

Thanks so much! Hope you enjoy it!

This is hella wormy.

I love a module with a neat little concept that it really indulges in, and this is exactly that. Super playable, funny without trying too hard, everything fits together really well. It's good! I like it.

Gross and weird. Exactly my kinda thing. I too have a love of inflicting disgusting worms upon people so this is a burrowing parasite straight to my heart. Lovely interpretation of the title and a hex crawl! I love a hex crawl! They are so underrated! Love this. Thank you  for making and submitting it!

Developer(+1)

Exactly! I contemplated going for the classic worm meaning to be snake, salamander or dragon, but nothing felt more vile and original than actual slimy worms!

Thanks so much for the kind words! 🙏

Great layout and art! Love the old-school vibes.

I love how hard you went for it with the worms. The worm candelabra made me laugh out loud.

I really enjoyed the visual style. It was a simple concept well executed. The map is great. Excellent font choice. I like the worm on the cover a lot, but for the purposes of scoring in a competition it’s maybe too plain for top marks.

Overall, this adventure is one of my favorites I’ve seen so far!

hey ursidae, this is cool stuff.

visually: very clean design, fun font choices that don't run into legibility issues, nice texture and color. all the off white and green-grays are very much my cup of tea. some other notes:

  • ah-ha. a worm rougelite. (wormlite?) i like the spawn room. room of offering is classico too. the placement of the path of death feels a bit odd to me considering it's a few degrees more treacherous than five and seven with not too much in terms of pay-off. i feel like if i died in there to the 0hp tile i'd probably just head straight to the crushing ceiling or flesh eating worm pool for my gems instead.
  • "ort village" and "hulgir" got nice mouthfeel. very appendix n.
  • as far as i can tell the rumor table is just flavor, and rumor 5 seems to outweigh all the rest in terms of mechanical importance. they also all seem true, which weakens their status as rumors and places them more in "loading screen tip" territory, y'know? having some rumors in here that are bad advice could lead players astray in a fun way.
  • also just spitballing here, but it could be cool if the rumor table influenced the dungeon in some way, considering you only get one rumor. this could add some variety to the zine, since everyone's worm dungeon would be a little different depending on the rumor they got.
  • back to visual design here, but the way the text frames the map is very nice.
  • a few pedantic text notes:
    • the worm pool refers to the worm chamber as the northern chamber, i'd recommend making these consistent for clarity
    • the flesh-eating worm pool is very similarly named to the worm pool. if this was an instance of the flesh-eating worm pool serving a similar purpose to the worm pool in-world but being corrupted in some aspect, i could see it working as flavor, but there's no real implication of this in the text itself. also "thick sludgy" for the water is kinda just "thick" twice, right?
    • with tense: in "the statues creak, a dull light flutters, as if something doesn't happen as intended" should be "as if something didn't happen as intended." and "the tall worm-headed figure will start barking out gibberish and attacks" reads as if the figure is barking out two things: gibberish and attacks, (rather than barking out gibberish and then attacking)
  • if i'm reading this right, it seems like the "correct" way to defeat the worm-thing is to destroy the statues rather than kill it, but doesn't it only drop loot if killed? how would players recover loot from a collapsed dungeon? is the intended idea here that it's a trade-off between killing the worm-thing the proper way and getting no treasure or killing it directly and getting treasure at the cost of potentially turning into a worm thing yourself? if that's the case:
  • i like the loot table but i wish there was a little more sauce to the entries. you definitely have the space for it!
    • the hero's sword doesn't really feel like it's unique to this dungeon. a poison sword is all well and good, but it doesn't feel grounded in the setting, y'know? some ways to accomplish this could be:
      • the previous hero felled by the worm-thing had a poison sword and tried to stop the worms from taking over by stabbing himself with it. obviously it didn't work, but there's a split of worms in the dungeon-- some old and weathered, some young and born sick from his influence.
      • there's remnants of his path in the dungeon: the undead have poison in what's left of their blood, there's acid streaks on the floors, the four damaged worm statues are melted down, etc etc.
    • is the worm helm an actual worm helmet, or is it just a dead worm worn as a hat? the former implies a cult constructed it, the latter feels like it should run a risk greater than negative charisma-- can't be healthy to inhale that dead worm air.

    • the worm egg and worm urn are the best of the bunch! these rule, and i think the implication that a player could end up forming their own worm dungeon just by using these is great.

  • hard not to think of ken russel's lair of the white worm with that finale. excellent pulp.

had a lot of fun reading through this! looking forward to seeing more of your work in the future

You had me at worms, but this has so much more going for it!

Perfectly gross themes throughout, interesting puzzles, and a fun dungeon that has more going for it than just treasure. I also really like the rebirth aspect. I could see players having a lot of fun running through this multiple times and figuring out the puzzles better as they go.

Also it’s visually so good!
